A study on the periodical domain obtained in Nd : $LiNbO_3$ sinlgle crystals grown by czochralski method (Czochralski법에 의해 성장시킨 Nd : $LiNbO_3$ 단결정의 주기적인 domain제어에 관한 연구)

  • $Nd_2O_3$0.2~0.5 wt.% doped $LiNbO_3$single crystals were grown by the Czochralski method. The ZnO doping by 2~8 mole% can improve the resistance of optical damage. In this study, Nd : LiNbO$_3$ single crystals with the periodical domain structure were obtained by CZ method.

  • Erbium(Er) doped LiNbO3(Er:LiNbO3) single crystal gibers were grown free of cracks along the c-axis by micro-pulling down method. the Er3+ concentration was distributed homogeneously along the growth axis. The samples for optical characterization were cut from as-grown single crystal fibers and polished. When the 980 nm light was incident on the sample, upconversion phenomena were observed at the green range of wavelength 510~570 nm. In addition, the intensity of upconversion was remarkably increased by increasing the concentration of Er2O3 dopant in as-grown Er:LiNbO3 crystals.

  • High-quality $Er^{3+}$ doped Mg : $LiNbO_3$single crystal fibers were grown by a micro-pulling down ($\mu$-PD) method. Single crystal fibers were pulled down through the nozzle, at a pulling down rate of 0.5 mm/min and using a Pt crucible with a nozzle 1 mm in diameter in air atmosphere. Defects such as bubbles, cracks and inclusions were not detected in any of the grown crystals. The optical transmission of Er : Mg : $LiNbO_3$crystal was measured and the energy levels of $Er_2O_3$ ion could be calculated. The photoluminescence spectrum of crystal fibers showed an energy band emission with the strongest line corresponding to the $^4I_{3/2}{\to}^4I_{15/2}$transition. The concentration dependence of the entire wavelength region emission intensity upon excitation intensity measured emission intensity for the 3 mol% MgO doped fibers was larger than that for the 1, 5 mol% MgO doped fibers.

  • Iron-doped LiNbO$_3$ crystals were grown by floating zone(FZ) method with different [Li]/[Nb] ratio in order to investigate doping effects of transition metal impurity in LiNbO$_3$ crystal. The grown crystals were analyized edge in UV/VIS/IR spectrometry and EPMA(electron probe micro-analysis). The absorption edge in UV-VIS region and OH-absorption peak in IR region were investigated. The change of Fe concentration along the solidification direction was also investigated

  • The optimum conditons were experimentally established for the powder synthesis and sintering of the feed-rods for $LiNbO_3$ crystal growth by a floating zone method. At the lower synthesis temperatures(700, $ 800^{\circ}C$) the minor amounts of $Li_2CO_3$ and $Nb_2O_5$ were present in the synthesized $LiNbO_3$ powder and at the higher temperature the particle size increased which is not favorable for the sintering process for the feed-rods. $LiNbO_3$ powder synthesized at $950^{\circ}C$ for 12 hours was found to be the best because it contains only the$LiNbO_3$ phase with the small particle size and uniform particle size distribution. As the sintering temperature and the soaking time increase, the sintered feed-rods exhibited the higher sintered density and grain growth phenomena. The $LiNbO_3$ feed rods sintering at $1100^{\circ}C$ for 2 hours were found to have the best microstructure for the precursor feed-rods of the floating zone crystal growth because of their higher density, small grain size and uniform particle size distribution. As the sintering temperature and the soaking time increase, the sintered feed-rods exhibited the higher sintered density and grain growth phenomena. The $LiNbO_3$ feed rods sintering at $1100^{\circ}C$ for 2 hours were found to have the best microstructure for the precursor feed-rods of the floating zone crystal growth because of their density, small grain size and uniform grain size distribution.

  • The doping effects of Mg and/or Fe ions on congruent LiNbO$_3$ single crystal growth were studied in order to clarify the roles of MgO in Fe doped LiNbO$_3$ single crystals. The effective distribution coefficienct of Fe was found decreased drastically from 0.85 to 0.5 by the addition of MgO into the LiNbO$_3$ melt. M ssbauer spectra revealed that the addition of MgO reduces the occurrence of Fe2+ ions during growth in air. Therefore, it is likely that there would be two important roles of MgO in Fe doped LiNbO$_3$. One is to suppress the incorporation of all Fe ions, and the other is to reduce the concentration of Fe2+ ions among the total Fe ions.

  • Congruent $LiNbO_3$ crystals with doped Mg and codoped with Mn or Fe were grown by the Czochralski method. It is known that the physical properties of $LiNbO_3$ depend strongly on the addition of Mg and transition metals. This is established by studying the following properties; XRD patterns, the phase transition temperature, energy of the fundamental absorption edge, the shape of the absorption band of the $OH^-$ vibration and lines of the ESR of $Fe^{3+},\; Mn^{2+}$. The position of the UV absorption edge and the shape and peak point of the absorption band of the $OH^-$ vibrational band changed monotonously up to a critical concentration of $Mg^{2+}$ ions. The mechanism of the incorporation of Mg ions changes at this concentration. The transition temperature was estimated by measuring the dielectric temperature behavior up to $1230^{\circ}C$ in a frequency range of 100Hz to 10MHz. EPR of $Mn^{2+}\;and\; Fe^{3+}$ ions were employed to investigated the Mg doping effects in the $LiNbO_3$ crystal. The increase of linewidths and the asymmetry of signals were observed in all crystals. New signals of $Fe^{3+}$ arising from the new centers were observed I the heavily Mg-doped crystals.

  • In order to measure the characteristics of Surface Acousitc Wave(SA W) with compositions of $LiNbO_3$ single crystal, $128^{\circ}$ Y cut wafer was fabricated from $LiNbO_3$ single crystals with the composition range of 47-50 $Li_2O$mol%. Delay lines were formed on the $128^{\circ}$ Y cut wafer using photolithography technique. Delay time was measured by pulse-echo overlap method. The compositional dependence of SAW characteristics, SAW velocity, electro-mechanical coupling coefficient$(K_s^2)$ and temperature coefficient of delay time(TCD), were investigated.

  • Periodic electric field assisted poling low loss (${\sim}0.1dB/cm$) single-mode Ti-diffused waveguides in $LiNbO_3$ has been achieved using a periodically patterned electrode on the +Z surface of Ti : $LiNbO_3$ crystal and homogeneous LiCl solution. Using selective chemical etching, we confirmed the periodic (${\sim}16{\mu}m$) domain inverted structure and measured SH (second harmonic) properties of fabricated periodically poled Ti : $LiNbO_3$ waveguides.
