Confusion of a patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) for the descending thoracic aorta is a fatal error occurring occasionally in infants or neonates. As a result, the left pulmonary artery (LPA) may be misconceived as the PDA, and ligated. This surgical mishap of other hospital leads to serious congestive heart failure and loss of left lung function due to the underdevelopment in the peripheral vascular and alveolar structures in neonates and premature infants. In this report, 3 cases of LPA ligation and subsequent treatment are presented.
Background: Ginseng is a traditional herbal medicine for human health. Ginseng contains a bioactive ligand named gintonin. The active ingredient of gintonin is lysophosphatidic acid C18:2 (LPA C18:2). We previously developed a method for gintonin-enriched fraction (GEF) preparation to mass-produce gintonin from ginseng. However, previous studies did not show the presence of other bioactive lipids besides LPAs. The aim of this study was to quantify the fatty acids, lysophospholipids (LPLs), and phospholipids (PLs) besides LPAs in GEF. Methods: We prepared GEF from white ginseng. We used gas chromatography-mass spectrometry for fatty acid analysis and liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry for PL analysis, and quantified the fatty acids, LPLs, and PLs in GEF using respective standards. We examined the effect of GEF on insulin secretion in INS-1 cells. Results: GEF contains about 7.5% linoleic (C18:2), 2.8% palmitic (C16:0), and 1.5% oleic acids (C18:1). GEF contains about 0.2% LPA C18:2, 0.06% LPA C16:0, and 0.02% LPA C18:1. GEF contains 0.08% lysophosphatidylcholine, 0.03% lysophosphatidylethanolamine, and 0.13% lysophosphatidylinositols. GEF also contains about 1% phosphatidic acid (PA) 16:0-18:2, 0.5% PA 18:2-18:2, and 0.2% PA 16:0-18:1. GEFmediated insulin secretion was not blocked by LPA receptor antagonist. Conclusion: We determined four characteristics of GEF through lipid analysis and insulin secretion. First, GEF contains a large amount of linoleic acid (C18:2), PA 16:0-18:2, and LPA C18:2 compared with other lipids. Second, the main fatty acid component of LPLs and PLs is linoleic acid (C18:2). Third, GEF stimulates insulin secretion not through LPA receptors. Finally, GEF contains bioactive lipids besides LPAs.

Lysophosphatidic acid (LPA), a simple phospholipid-derived mediator implicated in diverse biological actions, acts through the specific G-protein coupled receptors, LPA receptor (LPAR) $1{\sim}5$. Our previous study showed that LPAR3 is expressed in the uterine endometrium in a cell type- and stage-specific manner and LPA via LPAR3 increases PTGS2 expression in the uterine endometrium during the period of implantation. Although LPAR3 is considered to be predominant LPA receptor in the uterine endometrium, other LPA receptors might playa role to mediate LPA functions in the uterine endometrium during pregnancy. Among LPARs, we investigated expression of LPAR1 during the estrous cycle and pregnancy in this study. Uterine endometrial tissue samples were collected from day (D) 12 and D15 of the estrous cycle and from D12, D15, D30, D60, D90 and D114 of pregnancy. Northern blot analysis determined that LPAR1 mRNA was constitutively expressed in the uterine endometrial tissues during the estrous cycle and pregnancy of all stages. Analysis by immunoblotting revealed that LPAR1 proteins were present in the porcine uterine endometrium during the estrous cycle and pregnancy. Immunohistochemical experiments demonstrated that LP AR1 protein was localized to endometrial epithelium and stromal cell, specifically to nuclei of these cell types. Results in this study show that LPAR1 is constitutively expressed in the uterine endometrium during the estrous cycle and pregnancy. These results suggest that LPA via LPAR1 may playa role in the uterine endometrial function throughout pregnancy in pigs.
Background: Stenosis of the left pulmonary artery (LPA) after repair of tetralogy of Fallot (TOF) is troublesome. A new technique of LPA angioplasty using an autologous MPA flap was performed in patients with TOF Material and Method: From October 1998 to January 2001, 24 patients (median age; 10 months, range; 4 to 145 months) underwent total correction of TOF with LPA angioplasty using the autologous MPA flap. Five patients underwent pulmonary angioplasty without any patch over the MPA and LPA. The patches were required to enlarge only the MPA in 4 patients, and transannular RVOT widening was performed in 15. Result: There were no operative or late deaths. During follow-up (range: 6~42 months), reoperation for LPA stenosis was not required in any patients, but balloon angioplasty for branch pulmonary artery stenosis was performed in 3 patients. Echocardiography and CT angiography at the recent follow-up showed an obtuse angle between the MPA and LPA. Conclusion: Although further follow-up is needed, the angioplasty using the autologous MPA flap can be easily performed, avoiding patch-related complications, and allowing growth of the MPA flap. This angioplasty technique creates a more natural and obtuse angle between the MPA and LPA, which can minimize kinking of the LPA, especially in the patients who underwent transannular patch widening.
Background: The emergence of drug-resistant tuberculosis (TB), is a major menace to cast off TB worldwide. Line probe assay (LPA; GenoType MTBDRplus ver. 2) and Xpert MTB/RIF assays are two rapid molecular TB detection/diagnostic tests. To compare the performance of LPA and Xpert MTB/RIF assay for early diagnosis of rifampicin-resistant (RR) TB in acid-fast bacillus (AFB) smear-positive and negative sputum samples. Methods: A total 576 presumptive AFB patients were selected and subjected to AFB microscopy, Xpert MTB/RIF assay and recent version of LPA (GenoType MTBDRplus assay version 2) tests directly on sputum samples. Results were compared with phenotypic culture and drug susceptibility testing (DST). DNA sequencing was performed with rpoB gene for samples with discordant rifampicin susceptibility results. Results: Among culture-positive samples, Xpert MTB/RIF assay detected Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) in 97.3% (364/374) of AFB smear-positive samples and 76.5% (13/17) among smear-negative samples, and the corresponding values for LPA test (valid results with Mtb control band) were 97.9% (366/374) and 58.8% (10/17), respectively. For detection of RR among Mtb positive molecular results, the sensitivity of Xpert MTB/RIF assay and LPA (after resolving discordant phenotypic DST results with DNA sequencing) were found to be 96% and 99%, respectively. Whereas, specificity of both test for detecting RR were found to be 99%. Conclusion: We conclude that although Xpert MTB/RIF assay is comparatively superior to LPA in detecting Mtb among AFB smear-negative pulmonary TB. However, both tests are equally efficient in early diagnosis of AFB smear-positive presumptive RR-TB patients.

In this paper, the first attempt to design a novel structure of dual-band feedforward linear power amplifier(FFW LPA) was presented. Up to now, primary technical difficulty has been the extension of the conventional signal canceller to the dual-band operation. Therefore, we propose the design technique of the dual-band equal group delayed carrier canceller, the dual-band equal group delayed intermodulation distortion(IMD) canceller and the dual-band FFW LPA. The operation frequency bands of the implemented dual-band FFW LPA are digital cellular($f_0=880$ MHz) and IMT-2000($f_0=2.14$ GHz) band, which are separated about 1.26 GHz. With the high power amplifier of 120 W PEP for commercial base-station application, IMD cancellation loop shows 20.45 dB and 25.04 dB loop suppression at each band of operation for 100 MHz. From the adjacent channel leakage ratio(ACLR) measurement with CDMA IS-95A 4FA and WCDMA 4FA signal, we obtained 16.52 dB improvement at the average output power of 41.5 dBm for digital cellular band, and 18.59 dB improvement at the average output power of 40 dBm for IMT-2000 band simultaneously.
The study is to compare the temperaments and characters of the gifted in invention with those of the genearl students, and also the characteristics of the subgroups of the gifted in invention through the LPA analysis. The results of the study are as follows: First, we compared the results of JTCI (Junior Temperament and Character Inventory) between the students entering Institute of Invention Science Education and the general students; through this comparison, we found out that the gifted in invention are more creative and willing to accept, generally feel more positive, and have the motivation to pursue meaningful goals and values above the personal needs than the non-gifted. Second, through the LPA analysis, the gifted in invention were divided into two subgroups; one group which showed far higher scores on pursuing stimulus, the subscale of temperaments, and slightly higher scores on autonomy, the subscale of characters, and the other group which showed the similar scores on pursuing stimulus and far higher scores on autonomy.
In order to investigate the role of a small GTP-binding protein RhoA in lysophosphatidic acid (LPA)-induced stress fiber formation, C3 ADP-ribosyltransferase was prepared by expressing in E. coli and then applied to Rat-2 fibroblasts. C3 transferase isolated from E. coli was as effective as the toxin from Clostridium botulinum in ADP-ribosylation of RhoA. Incubation of the cells with C3 transferase for 2 days induced ADP-ribosylation of RhoA by a dose-dependent manner, with a sub-maximal induction at $25\;{\mu}g/ml$. As expected, LPA-induced stress fiber formation was completely blocked by pre-incubation with C3 transferase for 2 days. However, exogenously added C3 transferase had no significant effect on the formation of phosphatidylethanol by LPA. These results suggested that phospholipase D was not activated by RhoA in the LPA-induced stress fiber formation.

Compatibility of unsaturated polyester (UP) and low profile agent (LPA) of polystyrene (PS) have been investigated under various mixing conditions such as the ratio of UP and LPA, mixing time, mixing temperature, and input amount of 2nd UP. It was possible to obtain mixture with small particle size and low phase separation in condition of 35 g of LPA, 25 g of 1st UP input, 5 min of mixing time, 1700 rpm of mixing speed, and 45 g of 2nd UP input. It was found that compatibility of UP and LPA was very sensitive to mixing conditions. In addition, molded sample using sheet molding compound prepared by stable mixing condition appeared good properties such as low water adsorption, low shrinkage, and high gloss.
The determination of appropriate parameters and parameter conditions is very important for the optimization of production of target materials. Taguchi's method has been used widely as the basis for development trials and optimization during industrial process design. Reaction variables which influence product yield are easily determined and their effects are revealed by just a few reactions, negating the need for extensive experimental investigation. There are usually some factors that are responsible for variations in process characteristics, so called noise factors. Controlling noise factors is very costly and difficult or impossible. Taguchi's experimental design method was examined to determine the control factor's level that is less sensitive to the changes in environmental conditions and other noise factors without control of noise factors. In this study, optimization of lipase-catalyzed production of lysophosphatidic acid (LPA) which has various physiological functions was performed by Taguchi's method. We obtained LPA yields ($66.5\%$) with low variance (5.32) at 400 RPM, molar ratio of 40 : 3 (mol) (fatty acid: G-3-P), 48 h, and $50^{\circ}C$. Thus, bioactive LPA with a desired fatty acid moiety could be produced with high yields and low variance despite various environmental noise factors.
