An ethanolic fermentation process was developed for preparing Doenjang with high ethanol. Higher and efficient viable cell production of salt-tolerant ethanolic yeast is a prerequisite for the successful commercial-scale process of ethanol production during Doenjang fermentation. Culture conditions of salt-tolerant yeast, S. cerevisiae KFCC 10823, was studied in terms of the effect of several environmental and nutritional factors. Viable cell numbers were the highest in a medium containing the following components per liter of water: soysauce, 300ml; dextrose, 50 g; beef extract, 5 g; yeast extract, 5 g; $KH_2PO_4$, 5 g; NaCl, 50 g. The optimal culture conditions of S. cerevisiae KFCC 10823 were pH 5.5, $25^{\circ}C$, 200 rpm and 0.5 vvm. Yeast viability during batch fermentation was gradually decreased to a level less than $90{\%}$ after 35 hours. The maximum cell number was $2.2{\times}10_7$ cells/ml at the optimal condition. Doenjang prepared with ethanolic yeast was ripened after 45 days at $30^{\circ}C$. This Doenjang contains 470 mg% of amino nitrogen and 2.5% ethanol. The shelf-life at $30^{\circ}C$ was theoretically estimated as 444 days.

To develop bioflocculant for wastewater treatment, about 60 type culture strains and 450 strains isolated from natural sources were examined for screening their ability to flocculate the swine wastewater. Among them, YWO-5 showed the highest activity for NTU removal efficiency and was identified as Bacillus megaterium according to the cultural, morphological and physiological properties. The maximum production of the flocculant was achieved in culture medium containing 2% glucose, 0.05% soytone, 0.01% $CaCl_2$, 0.05% $KH_2PO_4$, and 0.05% yeast extract with initial pH 6.5 when cultured with rotary shaker controlled at 20$^{\circ}C$ and 150 rpm. With jar fermentor, the maximum production was reached to NTU removal efficiency of 93% after 3 days under the optimal conditions. The bioflocculant produced by Bacillus megaterium YWO-5 was effective on various suspended solids and organic wastewaters.

The present study explored the way to desalinate seawater for agricultural irrigation using forward osmosis (FO) process using liquid fertilizer as draw solution. FO experiments were performed in a cross flow mode using flat sheet FO membrane. The effect of membrane orientation, flow rate, and draw solution concentration on the performance of forward osmosis was investigated by measuring water flux of forward osmosis membrane. The water flux when the draw solution was placed against the membrane active layer was lower than the water flux when the feed solution was placed against the membrane active layer. This results indicated that the decrease of effective osmotic pressure by dilutive internal concentration polarization was less than that by concentrative internal concentration polarization. Increasing flow rate from 66.7 to 133.1 $cm^3$/min resulted in increase of the water flux when the membrane active layer orient to draw solution and feed solution, respectively. The reduction of resistance to water flow increased water flux at higher flow rate. The water flux of FO membrane increased with increasing draw solution concentration from 10000 to 30000 mg/L. The water flux for $KH_2PO_4$ draw solution was similar to that for commercial fertilizer. Optimization of FO process would contribute to economically desalinate brackish water for agricultural use.
This study was carried out for characterization of MIO synthesized in our laboratory by co-precipitation method and applied isotherm and kinetic models for adsorption properties. XRD analysis were conducted to find crystal structure of synthesized MIO. Further SEM and XPS analysis was performed before and after phosphate adsorption, and BET analysis for surface characterization. Phosphate stock solution was prepared by KH2PO4 for characterization of phosphate adsorption, and batch experiment was conducted using 50 ml conical tube. Langmuir and Freundlich models were applied based on adsorption equilibrium test of MIO by initial phosphate solution. Pseudo first order and pseudo second order models were applied for interpretation of kinetic model by temperature. Surface area and pore size of MIO were found $89.6m^2/g$ and 16 nm respectively. And, the determination coefficient ($R^2$) value of Langmuir model was 0.9779, which was comparatively higher than that of Freundlich isotherm model 0.9340.
A description of simple, isocratic and precise reversed phase HPLC methods is given for simultaneous quantification of pholcodine and ephedrine hydrochloride together with either carbinoxamine maleate or terfenadine in antitussive-antihistaminic oral pharmaceutical formulations. Separations were carried out on X-Terra and symmetry shield C18 column $(250\;{\times}\;4.6\;mm,\;5\;{\mu}m)$. The used isocratic elution systems were either $0.02\;M\;KH_2PO_4-acetonitrile$ in the ratio of 75 : 25 and pH adjusted to 7.70 with orthophosphoric acid or sodium hydroxide, for syrup (method A), or 0.02 octanesulphonic acid sodium salt solution-acetonitrile-acetic acid in the ratio of 75 : 25 : 0.5 for suspension (method B). The elution of both mixtures was achieved with a flow rate of 1 ml/min. Detection was carried out by UV absorbance at wavelengths of 220 and 250 nm for syrup and suspension, respectively. The quantification of the components in synthetic mixtures and actual syrup and suspension were calculated using the internal standard technique with metoclopramide HCl and codeine phosphate as internal standards (IS), respectively. The methods, for both mixtures, were validated and met all the requirements for the quality control analysis recommended by FDA and ICH.
Ginseng (Panax quinquefolius L.) has become one of the most valuable herb crops grown in North America. However, traditional cropping practices are favourable to disease and significant losses due to root disease are common, despite frequent use of fungicides. Seedlots are often contaminated with pathogens, however, little is known about the causes of seed decay and the role of seed pathogens as incitants of root rots. It was shown that both Fusarium spp. and Cylindrocarpon destructans were able to rot seeds and that C. destructans was more virulent than Fusarium spp. on seedling roots. A modified rose bengal agar MRBA) medium (1 g KH$_2$PO$_4$; 0.5 g MgSO$_4$; 50 mg rose bengal; 10 g dextrose; 5 g Bacto peptone; 15 g Bacto agar; 30 mg streptomycin sulfate; 250 mg ampicillin; 10 mg rifampicin; 500mg pentachloronitrobenzene; 500 mg dicloran; and 1 L distilled water) was superior to potato dextrose agar in detecting C. destuctans in diseased roots. Isolation of C. destructans from diseased seedlings arising from seeds sown in replant soil supported the hypothesis that this pathogen is a cause of ginseng replant failure in North America.
The cultivation of C. flavigena KIST 321, capable of utilizing cellulosic resources, was carried out in a 500 L fermentor by the batch process and the productivities of cellulosic SCP have been investigated by establishing the optimal conditions and levels of cellulosic material and others as medium components. The highest yield of the cell mass in the batch process was atttained under tile conditions at 30$^{\circ}C$, pH 7.4, 0.4∼0.6 VVM of aeration and at 130 rpm of agitation. According to the material balance of cellulosic SCP production using tile pretreated rice straw as a carbon source, more than 25 percent of rice straw on the base of drying weight was recovered in the form of cell mass.
A laboratory experiments were performed to investigate the treatment of photographic processing wastewater by chemical oxidation and biological treatment system. The effect of reaction conditions such as hydrogen peroxide dosage, ferrous sulfate dosage and pH on the COD removal in Fenton oxidation were investigated. The optimal dosage of hydrogen peroxide was 2.58 M and 3.87 M for the developing and fixing process wastewater, respectively. The Fenton oxidation was most efficient in the pH range of 3-5 and the optimal condition for initial reaction pH was 5 for a developing process wastewater. With iron powder catalyst, the COD for a developing process wastewater was removed in lower pH than with ferrous sulfate catalyst. The removal efficiency of COD for refractory compounds such as Diethyleneglycol, Benzylalcohol, Hydroxylamine Sulfate, Ammonium Thiosulfate, Ammonium Ferric EDTA and Disodium EDTA in the photogaphic wastewater was found than 90% except Potassium Carbonate. When the photographic processing wastewater after pretreatment by Fenton oxidation was treated with batch activated sludge process, the addition of $KH_2PO_4$ as a phosphorous compound improved the removal efficiency of COD. During the continuous biological treatment of developing and fixing process wastewater after pretreatment by Fenton oxidation, the effluent COD concentration less than 100 mg/l was obtained at 0.425 and 0.25 kgCOD/m$^3$.d, respectively.
