  • In order to evaluate the degradation organophosphorus pesticide, EPN, in water environment, the effects of water temp.(10$^{circ}C,\;30^{\circ}C$), pH(3-11) and sunlight on its degradation were investigated during 10 days. The degradation rate of EPN(200 rpm) was faster at higher water temp. and higher pH, i.e., its degradation rate at pH 3, 5, 7, 9, 11 was 57, 63, 66, 69, 75%(1$0^{\circ}C$), and 70, 74, 79, 91, 97%(3$0^{\circ}C$) after 10 days, respectively. The effect of water temp. on its degradation was little in acidic condition, but was rather great in alkaline condition, with time. EPN was degraded fast at the alkaline condition by photolysis. At the condition of pH 11, EPN was degraded fast at the early stage in the first 2 days, but after that the degradation rate was weakened.

  • Critical current($I_c$) degradation of HTS tapes after bending is one of the holiest issues in HTS development and application studies. Many people are measuring $I_c$ degradations for effect of tending radius. However even if the bending radius is larger than the breaking radius a HTS tapes can be damaged by repetitive bending, which is unavoidable in the winding processes. Therefore, We studied the $I_c$ degradation after repetitive bending, at 77K with self-field, of Bi-2223 tapes processed by "Powder-in-Tube" technique, which was made by America Superconductor Corporation(AMSC), Innova Superconductor Technology(InnoST) and Korea Electro-technology Research Institute(KERI). For each specimen $I_c$ degradation was measured various bending radius as function of repetitive bending number.

  • One of the major applications of REBCO coated conductor (CC) tapes is in superconducting magnets or coils that are designed for high magnet fields. For such applications, the CC tapes were exposed to a high level of stresses which includes uniaxial tensile or transverse compressive stresses resulting from a large magnetic field. Thus, CC tapes should endure such mechanical load or deformation that can influence their electromechanical performance during manufacturing, cool-down, and operation. It has been reported that the main cause of critical current (Ic) degradation in CC tapes utilized in coil windings for superconducting magnets was the delamination due to transversely applied stresses. In most high-magnetic-field applications, the operating limits of the CC tapes will likely be imposed by the electromechanical properties together with its Ic dependence on temperature and magnetic field. In this study, we examined the influence of the transverse compressive stress on the Ic degradation behaviors in various commercially available CC tapes which is important for magnet design Four differently processed REBCO CC tapes were adopted to examine their Ic degradation behaviors under transverse compression using an anvil test method and a newly developed instantaneous Ic measurement system. As a result, all REBCO CC tapes adopted showed robustness against transverse compressive stresses for REBCO coils, notably at transverse compressive stresses until 250 MPa. When the applied stress further increased, different Ic degradation behaviors were observed depending on the sample. Among them, the one that was fabricated by the IBAD/MOCVD process showed the highest compressive stress tolerance.

  • REBCO coated conductor (CC) tapes with superior mechanical and electromechanical properties are preferable in applications such as superconducting coils and magnets. The CC tapes should withstand factors that can affect their performance during fabrication and operation of its applications. In coil applications, CC tapes experience different mechanical constraints such as tensile or compressive stresses. Recently, the critical current ($I_c$) degradation of CC tapes used in coil applications due to delamination were already reported. Thermal cycling, coefficient of thermal expansion mismatch among constituent layers, screening current, etc. can induce excessive transverse tensile stresses that might lead to the degradation of $I_c$ in the CC tapes. Also, CC tapes might be subjected to very high magnetic fields that induce strong Lorentz force which possibly affects its performance in coil applications. Hence, investigation on the delamination mechanism of the CC tapes is very important in coiling, cooling, operation and design of prospect applications. In this study, the electromechanical properties of REBCO CC tapes fabricated by reactive co-evaporation by deposition and reaction (RCE-DR) under transversely applied loading were investigated. Delamination strength of the CC tape was determined using the anvil test. The $I_c$ degraded earlier under transverse tensile stress as compared to that under compressive one.

  • The influences of mixed strain mode of bending-tension on the critical current. Ic in externally reinforced Bi-2223 tapes and their interaction were investigated in this study. A test fixture which providing a mixed deformation mode of bending-tension to HTS tapes has been newly devised. When the total strain induced in the tape in the mixed strain mode was expressed by the superposition of the bending and tensile strains the irreversible strain for the critical current degradation of Bi-2223 tapes increased, as compared with the simple bending mode case. The $I_c$ degradation at the region exceeding the irreversible strain showed a medium between the simple bending case and the simple tension case. As the initial bending strain imparted increased , namely as the diameter of mandrel adopted decreased. the apparent irreversible strain in Bi-2223 tapes increased . but the increment became smaller As a result. it can be found that the tension to be applied to bent Bi-2223 tapes during cabling should be smaller. as the mandrel diameter becomes smaller.

  • When REBCO coated conductors (CCs) are applied to superconducting devices such as coils and magnets, they are subjected to deformation in various modes such as compression/tension bending, uniaxial/transverse tension and torsion. Despite outstanding performances by REBCO CC tapes, their electromechanical properties have been evaluated primarily under uniaxial tension, therefore data about the critical current ($I_c$) response in the compressive strain region are lacking. In this study, the characteristic responses of $I_c$ in REBCO CC tapes under bending strains in the range from tensile to compressive were evaluated. The springboard bending beam was used, wherein the CC tape sample was soldered onto the surface of the springboard. A Goldacker-type bending test rig, which lacks a support holding the sample during testing, was used as a comparator. Degradation in $I_c$ behaviors, including strain sensitivity, in differently processed REBCO CC tapes were examined based on the test rig used.

  • Superconductor is developed for applications in high-power devices such as power-transmission cables, transformers, motor and generators. In such applications, HTS tapes are subjected to various kinds of stress or strain. AC loss is also important consideration for many large-scale superconducting devices. In the fabrication of the devices, the critical current $(I_c)$ of the high temperature superconductor degrades due to many reasons including the tension applied by bending and thermal contraction. These bending or tension reduces the $I_c$ of superconducting wire and the $I_c$ degradation affects the AC loss of the wire. The $I_c$ degradation and AC loss (self field loss) of Bi-2223 HTS and Coated conductor were measured under tension and bending conditions at 77K and self-field.

  • The ability of Hep-G2 cells to process $[^{125}I]LDL$ under basal conditions was investigated. The receptor-binding and internalization of $[^{125}I]LDL$ increased with the time of incubation in a saturable manner. After 4 h of incubation, 31.4 ng of $[^{125}I]LDL$ was cell bound. The cells rapidly internalized $[^{125}I]LDL$ via specific, receptor-mediated endocytosis. The amount of internalized $[^{125}I]LDL$ reached a maximun of 96.7 ng at 2 h of incubation and remained constant for the next 2 h. The rate of degradation of internalized $[^{125}I]LDL$ proceeded in a linear manner over the entire 4 h of incubation after an initial lag period. The effects of individial fatty acids (C18:0. C18:1, C18:2. and C18:3), differing in their degree of unsaturation. on the receptor-binding, internalization and degradation of $[^{125}I]LDL$ were also investigated. Inclusion of 1.0 mM of each fatty acid into the culture medium significantly increased $[^{125}I]LDL$ metabolism in Hep-G2 cells. Among the fatty acids tested, stearic acid had the least effect on the receptor-binding activity. There were no significant differences among the unsaturated fatty acids in LDL-receptor binding. The effect of individual fatty acids on the $[^{125}I]LDL$ uptake was similar to that of the receptor-binding. showing a significantly lower effect with stearic acid. The amount of degraded material of internalized $[^{125}I]LDL$ was the lowest with stearic acid when it was compared with unsaturated fatty acids.

  • The five classes of the thermally aged CF8M specimen are prepared using an artificially accelerated aging method. Namely, after the specimens are held for 100, 300, 900, 1800, and 3600hrs at 430$^{\circ}C$ respectively, the specimens are water-cooled to room temperature. The impact energy variations are measures for both the aged and virgin specimens through the Charpy impact tests in addition to the microstructure observation, tensile, hardness and fatigue crack growth tests. From the present investigation the following results are obtained : 1) The difference among the thermally degraded specimens can be distinguished through their microstructures, 2) Hardness and tensile strength are increased to 300hrs, degradation specimen, while elongation and reduction area are decreased to 3600hrs degradation specimen, and impact energy is decreased to 1800hrs degradation specimen, 3) The FCG rates for thermally degraded specimens are larger than that of the virgin specimen.

  • Accelerated degradation mechanism of the heat-resistant steel for high temperature plant was analysed in terms of microstructure and hardness. In order to simulate the microstructure of the steel actually used at $540^{\circ}C$ in the field, isothermal exposure was carried out at $630^{\circ}C$ up to 4,800 hours. The artificial degradation mechanism was comparatively verified to successfully simulate degradation of the long-time used field material. For the artificially degraded specimens, databases including size and aspect ratio of carbide, chemical composition (i.e., Cr/Mo ratio) of grain boundary carbide were built up. These degradation parameters were suggested as fingerprints for PHM (i.e., prognostics health management) of power plants.
