Degradation of p-nitrophenol has been carried out using only gamma irradiation or gamma irradiation with $H_2O_2$ or $Na_2S_2O_8$. Effects of different operating parameters such as initial concentration ($50mg\;l^{-1}$, $100mg\;l^{-1}$, $200mg\;l^{-1}$, $300mg\;l^{-1}$, $400mg\;l^{-1}$, $500mg\;l^{-1}$ and $600mg\;l^{-1}$) on the extent of degradation has been investigated. At 5 kGy, $50mg\;l^{-1}$ p-nitrophenol was completely degraded, and the radiolytic degradation of p-nitrophenol was described by the pseudo-first-order kinetic model. The combination of gamma irradiation with $H_2O_2$ or $Na_2S_2O_8$ leads to an enhanced effect, which remarkably increased the degradation efficiency of p-nitrophenol and TOC removal. However, at high $H_2O_2$ concentration, the efficacy of p-nitrophenol degradation is reduced because ${\cdot}OH$ radicals are scavenged by $H_2O_2$ and $Na_2S_2O_8$.
Korea is the 11th largest energy consumption country and 96% of its total energy consumption depends on imports from overseas. Therefore it is a very important task to secure renewable energy sources which can reduce both the carbon-dioxide emission and dependency on overseas energy imports. Among the various renewable energy sources, organic wastes are important sources. In Korea, 113 million toe of methane is generated from organic wastes annually, but only 3.7% is effectively used for energy conversion. Thus, it is very important to make better use of organic wastes, especially for power generation. The goals of this project are to develope the fuel supplying system of Bio Gasturbine (GT) for 5MW-class co-generation system. The fuel supplying system mainly consists of $H_2S$ removal system, Bio Gas compression system, Siloxane removal system and moisture separating systems. The fuel requirement of 5MW-class GT is at around 60% of $CH_4$, $H_2S$ (<30 ppm), Siloxane(<10 mg/$nm^3$) and supply pressure (> 25 bar) from biogas compressor. Main mechnical charateristics of Bio Gasturbine system have the specific performance; 1) high speed turbine speed (12,840 rpm) 2) very clean emmission NOx (<50 ppm) 3) high efficiency of energy conversion rate. This paper focuses on the development of design technology for food waste biogas pretreatment system for 5MW-class biogas turbine. The study also has the plan to replace the fuel of gas turbine and other distributed power systems. As the increase of bioenergy, this system help to contribute to spread more New & Renewable Energy and the establishment of Renewable Portfolio Standards (RPS) for Korea.

Biofilters use porous solid media to support microorganisms and allow access to the contaminants in the airflow. The characteristics of media used in biofilters vary greatly, and therefore it is important to select the appropriate media in order to obtain a large enough surface attachment area and uniform pore. This study was performed to compare hydrogen sulfide ($H_2S$) removal efficiencies of three biofilter media; coconut fiber, ceramic, and polyurethane. The biofilter packed with coconut fiber showed stable removal activity when inlet loading was changeable, and was restored rapidly when the moisture content decreased. However, the coconut fiber suffered from low durability. To cope with this problem a media of fibrinous polypropylene was developed to strengthen the durability of the coconut fiber. Biofilter column experiments using the fibrinous polypropylene media demonstrated over 99% of removal efficiencies at pH as low as 3 and 6 seconds of EBRT (empty bed gas residence time). Due to its superior physical characteristics, it is expected that the $H_2S$ treatment performance will increase when the new fibrinous polypropylne media is applied in commercial biofilter systems.
Synthesis of 7$\beta$-[(Z)-2-(2-aminothiazol-4-yl)-2-(1-carboxy-1-methylethoxyimino)acetamido]-3-[[(3S, 5S)-5-[4-phenyl-5-(4-methylphenyl or 2-thiophenyl)-4H-l, 2, 4- triazol-3-yl]thiomethylpyrrolidin-3-yl]]thiomethyl-3-cephem-4-carboxylic acids (7a, 7b) were described. (2S, 4S)-4-acethylthio-2-[4-phenyl-5-(4-methylphenyl or 2-thiophenyl)-4 H-1, 2, 4-triazol-3-yl]thiomethyl-1-tert-butoxycarbonylpyrrolidines (4a, 4b) were prepared from trans-4-hydroxy-L-proline with (2S, 4R)-absolute configuration as starting material. 4-Phenyl-5-(4-methylphenyl or 2-thiophenyl)-4 H-l, 2, 4-triazol-3-thiols (2a, 2b) were prepared from p-toluic anhydride and 2-thiophene carboxylic acid hydrazide, respectively. p-Methoxybenzyl 7$\beta$-(Z)-2-(2-for-mamidothiazol-4-yl)-2-(1-tert-butoxycarbonylisopropylimino]acetamido-3-[[ (3S, 5S)-5-[4-phenyl-5-(4-methylphenyl or 2-thio phenyl)-4H-1, 2, 3-triazol-3-yl]thiomethyl-1- tert-butoxycarbonylpyrrolidin-3-yl]]thiomethyl-3-cephem-4-carboxylates (6a, 6b) were achieved by using p-methoxybenzyl ]7P-(Z)-2-(2-formamidothiazol-4-yl)-2-(tert-butoxycarbonylisopropylimino] acetamido-3-chloromethyl-3-cephem-4-carboxylate (5) and (2S, 4S)-4-acethylthio-2-[4-phenyl-5-(4-methyl phenyl or 2-thiophenyl)-4H-1, 2, 4-triazol-3-yl]thiomethyl-1-tert-butoxycarbonyl pyrrolidines (4a, 4b). Removal of formyl, Boc, and p-methoxybenzyl protecting groups were carried out by triflu oroacetic acid and anisole to give the target compounds.
Calcium (Ca) and potassium (K) were introduced to remove Sr and Cs in soil, respectively. Four factor and three level Box-Bhenken design was employed to determine the optimal washing condition of Ca- and K-based solutions, and the ranges tested were 0.1 to 1 M of Ca or K, L/S ratio of 5 to 20, washing time of 0.5 to 2 h, and pH of 2 to 7. The optimal washing condition determined was 1 M of Ca or K, L/S ratio of 20, washing time of 1 h, and pH of 2, and Ca-based and K-based solutions showed 68 and 81% removal efficiency for Sr and Cs, respectively in soil. For comparison, widely used conventional washing agents such as 0.075 M EDTA, 0.01 M citric acid, 0.01 M oxalic acid, and 0.05 M phosphoric acid were tested, and they showed 25 to 30% of Sr and Cs removal efficiency. Tessier sequential extraction was employed to identify the changes in chemical forms of Sr and Cs during the washing. In contrast to the conventional washing agents, Ca-based and K-based solutions were able to release relatively strongly bound forms of Sr and Cs such as Fe/Mn-oxide and organic matter bound forms, suggesting the involvement of direct substitution mechanism, probably due to the physicochemical similarities between Sr-Ca and Cs-K.
Selective catalytic oxidation of $H_2S$ to elemental sulfur using $TiO_2/SiO_2$ catalysts was investigated in this study. The reaction test with pure $TiS_2$ and $Ti(SO_4)_2$ and cyclic temperature operation revealed that $TiO_2$ had a good resistance to sulfation and sulfidation, which are known as the main cause of catalytic deactivation in sulfur recovery process. With the increase of $TiO_2$ loading amount in $TiO_2/SiO_2$ catalysts, the conversion of $H_2S$ increased and the selectivity of elemental sulfur was very slightly decreased. As the ratio of $O_2/H_2S$ increased, the selectivity to elemental sulfur was drastically decreased. In the presence of 10 vol.% water vapor to a stoichiometric mixture of $H_2S$ and $O_2$($H_2S$= 5 vol.% O=2.5 vol.% ), both activity and selectivity of 10 wt.% $TiO_2/SiO_2$ catalyst are decreased, but it still showed more than 80% of sulfur yield.
The main objective of this study was to evaluate the removal properties of Cu from existing exfoliated vermiculite (EV) coated with a mixed solution of sulfuric acid and glycerol on the $580^{\circ}C$ in heating, which uses coated with glycerol of copper ions can be removed more effectively. Serial batch kinetic tests and batch sorption tests were conducted to determine the removal characteristics for Cu in aqueous solution. The result of batch kinetic test shows that removal rate, $K_{obs}$ (1/hr), of Cu are 0.579, 0.878, 3.459, and 6.578 for MEV weight 1 g (25 g/L), 2 g (50 g/L), 3 g (75 g/L), 4 g (100 g/L), respectively. In this case the initial pH of the solution was 3.26. The removal experiment according to the concentration, $K_{obs}$ (1/hr), of Cu are 1.96, 0.878, 1.25, and 1.04 for the initial concentration of 3 mg/L, 5 mg/L, 8 mg/L, 10 mg/L, and the initial pH of the solution are 3.46, 3.26, 3.10, 2.96, respectively. Influence of initial pHs on Cu removal were tested under 1g of MEV with 5 mg/L of Cu solution. $K_{obs}$ (1/hr) were increased from 0.263 (pH 3) to 0.525 (pH 5). It leads to the conclusion that the removal rates are inversely proportional to the initial Cu concentration and are increased proportional to the initial pHs. Sorption capacity of MEV was determined by batch sorption tests. The maximum sorption capacity ($Q_{max}$) obtained from Langmuir was 0.761 mg/g, Linear and Freundlich partition coefficients were 0.494 L/g and 0.729 L/g (1/n = 0.476). These results show that the MEV could be used as an excellent adsorbent for copper contained in various types of aqueous solutions.
BACKGROUND: This study was performed to evaluate the effects of environmental factors and heavy metals on the growth and phosphorus removal capacity of Alcaligenes sp., which was well known as one of PAOs(Phosphorus Accumulating Microorganisms). METHODS AND RESULTS: The environmental factors used in this study were temperature, pH and carbon sources, and the heavy metals included Cu, Cd, Zn, As, and Ni. The growth and P removal efficiency of Alcaligenes sp. was maximal as temperature, pH, and carbon source were $25^{\circ}C$, 7, and glucose+acetate, respectively. Also, the $IC_{50}$(median inhibitory Concentration) values of Alcaligenes sp. for the Cu, Cd, Zn, As, and Ni were 5.03, 0.08, 0.73, 282.20 and 4.74 mg/L, respectively. CONCLUSION(S): Based on the results obtained from this study, it appears that the growth and P removal efficiency of Alcaligenes sp. were affected by the environment factors and at the best optimum condition for its growth and P removal efficiency, as the concentrations of heavy metals were gradually increased, its growth was correspondingly decreased.

This study investigated the effect of light intensity on the removal of particulate matter by Dieffenbachia amoena 'Marianne' and Spathiphyllum spp.. An acrylic chamber ($600{\times}800{\times}1200mm$, $L{\times}W{\times}H$) modeled as an indoor space and a green bio-filter ($495{\times}495{\times}1000mm$, $L{\times}W{\times}H$) as an air purification device were made of acrylic. The removal of particulate matter PM10 and PM1, the photosynthetic rate, stomatal conductance, and number of stomata of Dieffenbachia amoena 'Marianne' and Spathiphyllum spp. were measured according to three different levels of light intensity (0, 30 and $60{\mu}mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}PPFD$). Regarding the length of time taken for PM10 to reach $1{\mu}g$, the Dieffenbachia amoena 'Marianne' showed a significant difference according to the presence or absence of light, and there was no significant difference shown between light intensity of 30 and $60{\mu}mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}PPFD$. As for the Spathiphyllum spp., there was no significant difference between 0 and $30{\mu}mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}PPFD$, while a significant difference was shown at $60{\mu}mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}PPFD$. After 90 minutes, the PM1, PM10, and $CO_2$ residuals of the Spathiphyllum spp. were lowest at $60{\mu}mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}PPFD$. The remaining amount of PM1 and PM10 was lower with the Spathiphyllum spp. than with the Dieffenbachia amoena 'Marianne', even at $0{\mu}mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}PPFD$. With both plants, the higher the light intensity, the higher the photosynthetic rate, while the stomatal conductance did not show any significant difference. Spathiphyllum spp. showed a higher photosynthetic rate and stomatal conductance and a greater number of stomata than Dieffenbachia amoena 'Marianne', and stomata were observed in both the front and back sides of the leaves. The air purification effect of Spathiphyllum spp. is considered to be better than Dieffenbachia amoena 'Marianne' at the same light intensity due to such plant characteristics. Therefore, in order to select effective indoor plants for the removal of particulate contamination in an indoor space, the characteristics of plants such as the photosynthetic rate and the number and arrangement of stomata according to indoor light intensity should be considered.

Effects of grinding time and chemicals dosage in arsenic removal from contaminated paddy soil in China were investigated using lab scale attrition and froth flotation combining process. Arsenic concentration in the field soil was 76.51 mg/kg, exceeding Korean and Chinese standards, and predominant arsenic compounds fraction in sequential extraction was "residual" (over 80%). After wet sieving, soil with >2 mm and < 0.038 mm showed concentration lower than 'Warning Level' in Korea. Soil with 0.038-0.075 mm, showing the highest concentration, was discarded since it occupied minor weight fraction (10.1%). Thus soil between 0.075 and 2 mm was only used in the combining process. The highest Arsenic concentration in progeny fragments smaller than 0.038 mm reached up to 981.66 mg/kg after 5 min of attrition. Optimal dosage of collector ($C_5H_{11}OCS_2K$) and modifier ($Na_2S$ and $CuSO_4$) in froth flotation process for the selective separation of the chipped progeny particles from the parent fragments were determined both as 200 g/ton. Arsenic removal efficiency in froth flotation process was 38.47% and it was increased to 72.74% in additional flotation process, scavenging. Average arsenic concentration after overall process - wet sieving, attrition and froth flotation - was estimated to 16.45 mg/kg.
