  • Eleven F$_1$ rice hybrids were developed by using the genetic male sterile lines having the backgrounds of Korean variety. The average heterosis, heterobeltiosis and standard heterosis for grain yield were 15.2%, 8.7% and 17.9%, respectively. Significant heterobe1tiosis for number of grains per panicle was observed. The leaf blast reaction of the hybrids was mostly similar to that of the more resistant parent. Amylose content of the hybrids ranged from 20.5% to 22.5% and protein content from 10.4% to 11.1%. The degrees of alkali digestion value, white center or white belly, clearance and heading date of the hybrids were almost same as their parents.

  • Artificial interspecific matings between Matsumuraeses phaseoli and M. falcana (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) were conducted to know the possibility of hybridization of the two sympatric species. Reciprocal crossings successfully produced F1 hybrids. Most of F2 crosses yielded progenies except all mating trials with females of F1 hybrid obtained from M. phaseoli female. Inbreedings of the F2 hybrids produced F3 progenies. In backcrossings between F1 hybrids and parent lines, all the two mating trials with females of F1 hybrid obtained from M. phaseoli females did not produce any progeny, while other 6 backcrosses produced the next generations. Inbreedings of the backcross lines also produced subsequent progenies. These results indicated that F1 females produced from hybridization between M. phaseoli females and M. falcana males were sterile. Conclusively, it suggested that a partial reproductive isolation at a postzygotic stage can occur between the two sympatric species.

  • To evolve silkworm hybrids with higher survival and productivity and easy and effective seed cocoon production, three new evolved bivoltine hybrids of silkworm (Bombyx mori L.), created with participation of sex-limited lines at eggs and larva stage were evaluated with control Super$_1$${\times}$Hessa$_2$ hybrid at Plovdiv Agrarian University during 2000 - 2002. ANOVA analysis was employed and the performance of hybrids was observed in respect of main quantitative traits. The results obtained show significant superiority of new hybrids T$_{15}$ 4/${\times}$TBV$_{2}$24/, XT$_{215}$38/${\times}$TV$_{3}$2/, XT$_{215}$38/${\times}$B$_{2}$6/ and their reciprocal crosses over the control. They were characterized with 99% hatchability of eggs, 93-95% silkworm survival, 2.32- 2.42 g cocoon weight, 53.5-55.7 cg shell weight, 22.9-23.1% shell ratio, 1,307-1,326 m filament length, 3.08-3.17 denier, 95-96% reelability, 44.4-45.1% silk ratio, 569-593 number of normal eggs per lying and 347-364 mg weight of normal eggs per lying. Newly evolved hybrids were manifested high productivity, 41.0-43.6 kg cocoon yield and 7.33-7.78 kg raw silk yield per one box (20,000$\pm$200 viable eggs), which significant surpass the control Super$_1$${\times}$Hessa$_2$ hybrid with 7.6-14.4% and 10.8-17.6%, respectively. T$_{15}$ 4/${\times}$TBV$_{2}$24/ and XT$_{215}$38/${\times}$TV$_{3}$2/ were considered as highly productive hybrids to local conditions and found suitable to rear in spring season.n.

  • This study was carried out to ascertain the basic information on characteristics of Korean Ginseng(Panax ginseng) and American ginseng(Panax quinquefolius), F$_1$ hybrids. Interspecies hybrids between Panax ginseng and Panax quinquefolius were examined morphological characteristics, rusty root incidence, and contents of effective ingredients such as ginsenosides. The summarized results are as follows. In Panax ginseng, rusty root incidence tended to increase with age of ginseng, but there was no difference in the incidence among ginseng ages and cultivation years in Panax quinquefolius and F$_1$ hybrid. The interspecies hybrid of panax ginseng and Panax quinquefolius flowered later than the Panax ginseng, but earlier than the Panax quinquefolius. As for the characteristics of ginseng root, Panax quinquefolius seedling was better than cv. Panax ginseng, as the former had longer and heavier seedling root than the latter. Ginsenosides of the hybrid F$_1$ showed intermediate value in amounts of Rb$_1$, Rb$_2$, Rc and Rd which were detected as in Panax gineng and Panax quinquefolius. The amount of Re of the hybrid was higher, but that of Rg$_1$ and Rg$_2$ in main and branch roots was lower compared with its parents. Rf was 0.14% and 0.20% in main and branch roots of Panax ginseng, respectively; however, no Rf was detected in Panax quinquefolius and in the hybrid F$_1$. This suggests there may be remarkable difference in Rf content among the ginseng species.

  • In order to evaluate the characteristics of growth and yield in $F_1$ waxy hybrids using Korean local maize lines, six hybrids including check, Chalok #1, were planted at the experinental field of the Chungnam National University. Stern and ear heights of $Yeonnong{\times}Jaerae$ and $FR805/IK_3{\times}Koryong$ hybrids were higher than the check hybrid. Number of tillers per plant in all hybrids were similar as 0.3 to 0.5 per plant. Ear length of waxy hybrids was longer than 15cm of check hybrid and ear diameter was also thicker than check except $FR805/IK_3{\times}Koryong$ waxy hybrid. A final result, $Yeonnong{\times}Jaerae$ among hybrids was comparatively superior to other hybrids in the test.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the utility and agronomic characteristics and use of cytoplasmic. male-sterile (CMS) haploid plants derived from interspecific cross between (male-sterile NC82$\times$burley21) F$_1$ plant (Nicotiana tabacum L.) and Nicotiana africana. Abundant seeds of high germinability were obtained when Nicotiana tabacum (cytoplasmic male-sterile F$_1$ plants) is pollinated by Nicotiana africana. Most of seedlings died at the cotyledonary stage. The remaining seedlings are viable F$_1$ hybrids or maternal haploids that can be easily distinguished. Number of interspecific Fl hybrids and matermal haploids per capsule obtained from the interspecific cross between cytoplasmic male-sterile tobacco F$_1$ plants and N.africana yielded 2.2 and 0.5 plants, respectively. Out of 149 CMS haploid plants obtained from interspecific cross, 102 plants showed green type while the others were yellow type for leaf and stem. This results agreed with the genetic ratios expected among haploid plants from the F$_1$ hybrids heterozygous for two recessive genes of yellow color of burley tobacco plant. Out of 83 CMS haploid plants inoculated with TMV, 48 plants showed resistant, while the others was susceptible. It agreed with the expected genetic ratios for a single dominant gene of TMV resistance. CMS haploid plant will be useful as a source material for breeding of CMS doubled haploid lines

  • The process of removal of gummy proteinous material sericin from silk is commonly called as degumming loss or boil-off loss ratio. In the present study, the boil-off loss ratio in the cocoon shells of twelve multivoltine${\times}$bivoltine hybrids and their parents were analysed. Inheritance pattern of boil-off loss ratio was analysed in crosses involving high and low boil-off loss parents, F$_1$s, F$_2$s and back-crosses by parent off spring regression analysis. Heterosis and heterobeltiosis was also analysed for this character, Highly significant (P>0.01) variations were observed in eight out of ten multivoltine and two out of five bivoltine parents indicating the presence of genetic variation in the expression of boil-off loss ratio. Among F$_1$ hybrids, ten hybrids expressed significant (P>0.01) variations when compared with control hybrid PM${\times}$NB$_4$D$_2$. Significant negative heterosis was expressed in three multi ${\times}$ bi hybrids viz., BL67${\times}$CSR$_{101}$, 96A${\times}$CSR$_{19}$ and 96C${\times}$CSR$_{19}$, which is desirable for this character, whereas expression of heterobeltiosis was significant only with one hybrid, 96C${\times}$CSR$_{18}$ in desired direction. Studies on inheritance pattern showed that the character is heritable and contribution percentage of female and male in the ratio of 50.9: 49.1 and it appears that both the parents are influencing in the expression of boil-on loss ratio in silkworm. Based on the overall performance and evaluation by multiple trait evaluation index and also considering the expression of the boil-off loss ratio three hybrids vix., BL67 ${\times}$ CSR$_{101}$, 96A${\times}$CSR$_{19}$ and 96C${\times}$CSR$_{18}$ were found superior and recommended for commercial exploitation.n.ion.n.

  • The white-colored and the dark gray-colored mutants were frequently happened in cultivated areas of Pleurotus ostreatus (Wonhyeong-neutari). These caused conflicts between farmers and spawn companies. Our studies were conducted to elucidate the mechanism of mutagenesis. The results from the studies would provide valuable informations that could be used to prevent the color-related mutation, and also will be applied in breeding programs of P. ostreatus. Oyster mushroom variety, Wonhyeong-neutari, is somatic hybrid of Pleurotus and has genetic makers for arginine, ornithine, proline, riboflavine. Genetic markers analysis of monospore isolates derived from color mutants show identical tendency with that of Wonhyeong-neutari, these results indicate that color mutants were derived from Wonhyeongneutari. Twenty-one and four homokaryons were selected from the white-colored mutant MGL 2205 and gray-colored ASI 2029. All 34 F1 hybrids derived from the white-colored mutant MGL 2205 produce white-color fruiting bodies, indicating that the white color trait is heritable. In the first generation hybrids between the white-colored MGL 2205 and the gray-colored ASI 2029, all 16 hybrids produced pigmented fruiting bodies. Homokaryons isolated from the hybrid MGL 2205 X ASI 2029 were mated with homokaryon tester strains derived from MGL 2205. By these result, we could assumed that white color trait is a heritable character which is controlled by more than one recessive gene.
