Recently geosynthetics that can be constructed on soft ground have been used for reinforcement and separation in various ways. Through laboratory model tests and numerical analysis, in this study, estimated the suitability of cable elements and appropriate input factors considering loading effect in modeling of geosynthetics. First, in laboratory model tests, geosynthetics were constructed on the clay, and covered with the thickness, 7.5cm of sand mat. And then static and dynamic model tests were performed measuring loading, settlement, ground lateral displacement, and displacements of geosynthetics, but, for cyclic loading, bearing capacity increased linearly with stiff slop because cyclic loading with constant cyclic pressure compacted the ground. Numerical analysis were performed with FLAC 4.0 2D using Mohr-Coulomb and Modified Cam-Clay models, and they compared with the results of model tests. Cable elements of FLAC in modeling geosynthetics couldn't consider the characteristics of geosynthetics that increase shear strength between geosynthetics and clay according to the loading increase. Therefore, in this study, appropriate equation that can consider loading effects in Cable elements was proposed by Case Study.

In this paper, the effects of variability of smear zone characteristics induced by installation of prefabricated vertical drains on the preloading design are investigated employing analytical and numerical approaches. Conventional radial consolidation theory has been adopted to conduct analytical parametric studies considering variations of smear zone permeability and extent. FLAC 2D finite difference software has been employed to conduct the numerical simulations. The finite difference analyses have been verified using three case studies including two embankments and a large-scale laboratory consolidometer with a central geosynthetic vertical drain. A comprehensive numerical parametric study is conducted to investigate the influence of smear zone permeability and extent on the model predictions. Furthermore, the construction of the trial embankment is recommended as a reliable solution to estimate accurate smear zone properties and minimise the post construction settlement. A back-calculation procedure is employed to determine the minimum required waiting time after construction of the trial embankment to predict the smear zone characteristics precisely. Results of this study indicate that the accurate smear zone permeability and extent can be back-calculated when 30% degree of consolidation is obtained after construction of the trial embankment.
The evaluation of Thermo-Hydro-Mechanical (THM) coupling behavior is important for the development of underground space for various purposes. For a high-level radioactive waste repository excavated in a deep underground rock mass, the accurate prediction of the complex THM behavior is essential for the long-term safety and stability assessment. In order to develop reliable THM analysis techniques effectively, an international cooperation project, Development of Coupled models and their Validation against Experiments (DECOVALEX), was carried out. In DECOVALEX-2015 Task B2, the in situ THM experiment that was conducted at Horonobe Underground Research Laboratory(URL) by Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA), was modeled by the research teams from the participating countries. In this study, a THM coupling technique that combined TOUGH2 and FLAC3D was developed and applied to the THM analysis for the in situ experiment, in which rock, buffer, backfill, sand, and heater were installed. With the assistance of an artificial neural network, the boundary conditions for the experiment could be adequately implemented in the modeling. The thermal, hydraulic, and mechanical results from the modeling were compared with the measurements from the in situ THM experiment. The predicted buffer temperature from the THM modelling was about $10^{\circ}C$ higher than measurement near by the overpack. At the other locations far from the overpack, modelling predicted slightly lower temperature than measurement. Even though the magnitude of pressure from the modeling was different from the measurements, the general trends of the variation with time were found to be similar.
Existing cut-and-cover tunnels are designed regardless of cut-slope under the assumption that the overburden weight of backfill soil acts on tunnel arch and the earth pressure at rest acts on tunnel walls. However, actual earth pressures acting on the tunnel lining depend on open-cut size composed of cut-slope and cut-width, and thus the tunnel lining shows a different structural behavior. This study investigated the effect of cut-slope on structural behavior of the cut-and-cover tunnel lining as follows; Firstly, a comprehensive numerical analysis method using FLAC2D code was used and verified by field measurements of tunnel profile. Secondly, based on the verified numerical analysis technique, earth pressure acting on the lining, and displacement and sectional force developed on the lining were estimated with various shapes of cut-slopes$30^{\circ}\;, 456{\circ},\; 60^{\circ},\; and\;75^{\circ}%). Numerical analysis results indicate that the steeper cut-slope shows the more displacement and moment of the tunnel lining.
This study employs three-dimensional simulation through FLAC3D to investigate the impact of installation angles on the dynamic characteristics of Triaxial Micropiles. The numerical model is validated against centrifuge test results to ensure accuracy. The findings reveal significant influences of the installation angle on the dynamic behavior of Triaxial Micropiles. Specifically, under seismic conditions such as the Capetown and San Fernando earthquakes, the lowest recorded values for peak bending moment and settlement occurred at an installation angle of 15 degrees. In contrast, when subjected to an artificial earthquake with a frequency of 2 Hz (Sine 2 Hz), Micropiles installed at 0 degrees exhibited the lowest peak bending moment, maximum axial load, and settlement values.
A pilot scale filed model test and 2-D numerical analysis was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of constructing a geogrid-reinforced and pile-supported embankment system over soft ground to reduce differential settlement, and the results are presented hearin. Three-by-three pile groups with varying the space between pile were driven into a layer of soft marine clay and a layer of geogrid was used as reinforcement over each pile group. 2-D numerical analysis has been conducted by using the FLAC-2D(Fast Lagrangian Analysis of Continua) program for same condition of field model test. The settlement, vertical stress, and strain of geogrid due to the construction of embankment were measured at various locations. Based on the field model test and numerical analysis results, pile reinforcement generated the soil arching at the midspan of pile cap and the geogrid reinforcement helps reduce the differential settlement of the soft ground by tensile strength of geogrid. Also for $D/b{\geq}6.0$, the effectiveness of geogrid reinforcement in reducing settlement is negligible.

Recently, the necessity of deep and double-deck tunnels has been grown day by day due to the increase of traffic volume at metropolitans and thus the study on the divergence of those tunnels becomes required. Therefore sensitivity analyses were conducted with FLAC 2D program by selecting ground condition, coefficient of lateral pressure, support pattern, and depth of rock cover as parameters. Ultimately, this study is to find the optimal shape and support method of a diverged section. As the results of this study, it turned out that the box type gave higher stability of the section than arch type unlike the general thought. It can be explained that the arch type has about 30% bigger excavation area than the box type. When the ground conditions are poor, steel pipe grouting reinforcement gives higher stability than rockbolt reinforcement, but its thickness and range do not give a great influence on the stability of the enlarged section.

The present study developed a program which can assess the reliability of tunnel support systems based on a probability-based method. The developed program uses FLAC2D as a solver, and can automatically execute all the processes, associated with numerical and probabilistic analysis. Since a numerical analysis, which models the ground, requires a significant calculation time, it is actually impossible to apply simulation-based methods to probabilistic assessment on the reliability of tunnel support systems. Therefore, the present study used a point estimate method, which is efficient for probabilistic analysis since the method can significantly reduce the number of samples when compared with the simulation-based method. The developed program was applied to a tunnel project, and the results were compared with those through a deterministic approach. From the comparison, it was identified that a probabilistic approach can quantitatively assess the reliability of tunnel support systems based on probability of failure and can be used as a tool for decision making in tunnel support designs.

In recent years, utilization of underground space has been increasing in various parts of the world. In particular, open-cut method is usually applied to the shallow depth excavation. However some problems such as extreme traffic congestion and unstability of adjacent structures etc. might occur. In order to cope with these problems, the M-CAM (Modified Cellular Arch Method) method was proposed to excavate soil tunnels at shallow depth with secured enough stability and minimized construction period. In this study, sensitivity analysis was performed to predict the influence of the size of CPW(Continuous Pile Wall) and ground conditions on the behavior of the tunnel. First of all, embedded depth and diameter (or thickness) of CPW, coefficient of lateral earth pressure, and ground conditions were selected as parameters that could affect tunnel stability. Meanwhile, FLAC 2D based on finite difference method was used for numerical analysis. As a result of this study, it was checked out that embedded depth among sizes of CPW had a greatest influence on the stability of a tunnel.
This research was intended to verify the stability of landfill final cover using SRSL(Self Recovering Sustainable Liner) with regard to differential settlements due to the degradation of waste and so on in a waste landfill. Numerical analysis was performed using FLAC 2D software program with input parameters based on soil characteristic tests and reference data after the blank was designed in order to represent the decomposition condition of waste. The maximum settlement of landfill cover was calculated to investigate the structural stability of landfill cover with the different condition of settlement width, settlement depth, and number of differential settlements. The allowable maximum deformation rate of SRSL, which was calculated using field permeability tests, was 6 mm. The analysis showed that SRSL was stable in case of a differential settlement width not exceeding 24.5% of total cover width.
