  • Numerous stationary NOx emission sources have employed a suitable deNOx technology that is typically selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NOx by NH3 over V2O5/TiO2-based catalysts with on-demand monolithic structures. These structured catalysts undergo a time-on-deterioration of deNOxing activity on site. Thus, we need more efficient, more deactivation-tolerant, more economic deNOx systems and for which, their performance management is essential. This review has covered details of strategies to successfully manage the performance of SCR catalysts and timely replace them to new or rejuvenated ones. Key considerations to maintain the catalyst activity will be reviewed. Details of the sequential addition of new catalysts and the replacement of life-end catalysts and their regeneration will be discussed with general guidances to determine the time for such a replacement. Finally, a better way to get more economic approaches to deNOx system management will be proposed here.

  • Computer methods with simplified mathematical models in conjunction with empirical model parameters can be efficiently practiced into an optimization of a diesel aftertreatment system. Components of prime interests are diesel particulate filter, diesel oxidation catalyst and de-$NO_x$ catalytic converter. de-$NO_x$, de-PM, and de-HC processes in each part are individually modeled, formulated and then combined into an integrated analysis procedure for a unified simulation of the diesel emission aftertreatment. The model is empirically tuned and validated with comprehensive engine and laboratory data. The effects of emission species and space velocity on the $NO_x$ and soot reductions are parametrically investigated. A lowered $NO_2/NO_x$ ratio due to PM oxidation in DPF contributes to promote the $NO_x$ reduction by SCR at intermediate gas temperatures. $NO_x$ reduction is inert to the PM oxidation at high temperatures. Rate of PM trapping strongly depends on temperature and $NO_x$ concentration.

  • Ethanol was used as reducing agent to remove $NO_x$ exhaust from the stationary source. Pre-treatment with sulfuric acid over $Ag/Al_2O_3$ catalyst was dedicated to overcome the $SO_2$ poisoning effect. The $NO_x$ reduction experiment was performed under the simulated condition of power plant The increased surface area with higher CPSI devoted to increase de-$NO_x$ yield. De-$NO_x$ yield of the $NO_x$ exhaust containing 20 ppm of $SO_2$ increased after acid treatment with 0.7% $H_2SO_4$ over 4.0% $Ag/Al_2O_3$, where the increased dispersion of Ag found from the results of XRD and XPS was the dominant factor for the increased de-$NO_x$ yield. However, the reason for the decreased de-$NO_x$ yield with the acid treatment of higher concentration (1.0% and 2.0%) of $H_2SO_4$ was found to be due to the formation of $Ag_2SO_4$ crystallites found from XRD result. Acid-treated $Ag/Al_2O_3$ catalyst showed maximum de-$NO_x$ yield at higher temperature than non-treated $Ag/Al_2O_3$ catalyst did.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the reaction characteristics of corona/catalyst hybrid $DeNO_x$ process. The experiments were performed by using the multi-staged pin-to-hole type corona reactor which is enable to control the pin-to-hole gap and to insert the catalyst. Also, used for this study, were catalysts which commercially used Pt, Pd and $TiO_2$, and oxygen and hydrocarbon ($C_2H_4$) as reagents. In the syn-gas test, at high temperatures in the range of $100{\sim}200^{\circ}C$, the corona-only $DeNO_x$ process did not reduce the $NO_x$ concentration effectively. However in the presence of ethylene and oxygen as reagents, the $NO_x$ removal efficiency was better at these high temperatures than corona-only $DeNO_x$ process. In addition, coronal catalyst hybrid process with $TiO_2$ showed more efficiency of $NO_x$ removal than Pt and Pd catalyst, because the $TiO_2$ catalyst was more active than Pt and Pd catalyst to converse the $NO_2$ to $HNO_3$. Furthermore, at the condition of real diesel exhaust gas, the $DeNO_x$ efficiency of corona/catalyst hybrid process was not good at higher reaction temperature and plasma density.

  • In this paper, we investigated the post-combustion removal of nitrogen oxide($NO_x$) and sulfur oxide($SO_x$) which is based on the gas to particle conversion process by the pulsed corona discharge. Under normal pressure, the pulsed corona discharge produces the energetic free electrons which dissociate gas molecules to form the active radicals. These radicals cause the chemical reactions that convert $SO_x$ and $NO_x$ into acid mists and these mists react with $NH_3$ to form solid particles. Those particles can be removed from the gas stream by conventional devices such as electrostatic precipitator or bag filter. The reactor geometry was coaxial with an inner wire discharge electrode and an outer ground electrode wrapped on a glass tube. The simulated flue gas with $SO_x$ and $NO_x$ was used in the experiment. The corona discharge reactor was more efficient in removing $SO_x$ and $NO_x$ by adding $NH_3$ and $H_2O$ in the gas stream. We also measured the removal efficiency of $SO_x$ and $NO_x$ in a cylinder type corona discharge reactor and obtained more than 90 % of removal efficiency in these experimental conditions. The effects of process variables such as the inlet concentrations of $SO_x$, $NH_3$ and $H_2O$, residence time, pulse frequencies and applied voltages were investigated.

  • Empty fruit bunch (EFB) char was used to remove $NO_x$ and odorous substances. The physicochemical properties of the EFB chars were altered by steam or KOH treatments. The Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface area and porosity were measured to determine the properties of the modified EFB chars. The $deNO_x$ and adsorption test for hydrogen sulphide and acetaldehyde were performed to determine the feasibility of the modified EFB chars. The KOH-treated EFB (KEFB) char revealed higher $deNO_x$ efficiency than with commercial activated carbon. The Cu-impregnated EFB char also had high $deNO_x$ efficiency at temperatures higher than $150^{\circ}C$. The KEFB char showed the highest hydrogen sulphide and acetaldehyde adsorption ability, followed by the steam-treated EFB char and untreated EFB char. Moreover, the product prepared by sulfonation of EFB char showed excellent performance for esterification of palm fatty acid distillate for biodiesel production.

  • The steady-state kinetics of the selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of $NO_X$ with $NH_3$ has been investigated over a commercial ${V_2}{O_5}/TiO_2$ catalyst. In order to account for the influence of transport effects the kinetics are coupled with a fully transient two-phase 1D+1D monolith channel model. The Langmuir-Hinshelwood (L-H) mechanism is adopted to describe the steady-state kinetic behavior of the ${V_2}{O_5}/TiO_2$ catalyst. The reaction rate expressions are based on previously reported papers and are modified to fit the experimental data. The steady-state chemical reaction scheme used in the present mathematical model has been validated extensively with experimental data of selective $NO_X$ reduction efficiency for a wide range of inlet conditions such as space velocity, oxygen concentrations, water concentration, and $NO_2/NO$ ratio. The parametric investigations are performed to examine how the $NH_3$ slip from a SCR $DeNO_X$ catalyst and the conversion of $NO_X$ are affected by the reaction temperature, $NH_3/NO_X$ feed ratio, and space velocity for feed gas compositions with $NO_2/NO_X$ ratios of 0 and 0.5.

  • This study aimed to measure the levels of interferon-gamma (IFN-${\gamma}$), tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-${\alpha}$), interleukin 1 (IL-1), interleukin 6 (IL-6), and nitrite/nitrate ($NO_x$) in serum of dogs experimentally infected with Rangelia vitalii. Twelve female mongrel dogs were divided into 2 groups; group A (uninfected controls) composed by healthy dogs (n=5) and group B consisting of dogs inoculated with R. vitalii (n=7). Animals were monitored by blood smear examinations, which showed intraerythrocytic forms of the parasite on day 5 post-infection (PI). Blood samples were collected through the jugular vein on days 0, 10, and 20 PI to determine the serum levels of IFN-${\gamma}$, TNF-${\alpha}$, IL-1, IL-6, and $NO_x$. Cytokines were assessed by ELISA quantitative sandwich technique, and $NO_x$ was measured by the modified Griess method. Cytokine levels (IFN-${\gamma}$, TNF-${\alpha}$, IL-1, and IL-6) were increased (P<0.01) in serum of infected animals. Serum levels of $NO_x$ were also increased on days 10 PI (P<0.01) and 20 PI (P<0.05) in infected animals. Therefore, the infection with R. vitalii causes an increase in proinflammatory cytokines and nitric oxide content. These alterations may be associated with host immune protection against the parasite.

  • The influence of sulfate on the selective catalytic reduction of $NO_x$ on the Ag/$Al_2O_3$ catalyst was studied when $CH_4$ was used as a reducing agent. Various preparation methods influenced differently on the $deNO_x$ activity. Among the methods, cogelation precipitation gave best activity. When sulfates were formed on the surfaces of samples prepared by impregnated and deposition precipitation, $deNO_x$ activity was enhanced as long as suitable forming condition is satisfied. The major sulfate formed in Ag/$Al_2O_3$ catalyst was the aluminum sulfate and it seems that this sulfate acted as a promoter. When Mg was added to the Ag/$Al_2O_3$ catalyst it promoted $deNO_x$ activity at high temperature. Intentionally added sulfate also enhanced $deNO_x$ activity, when their amount was confined less than 3 wt%.
