Advances of Isomerizing-hydrogenating Properties of CoMo Catalysts Supported on ASA-Al2O3

  • Because hydrotreating (HDT) of FCC gasoline is one of the important processes used to prepare such gasoline for blending, the development of a catalyst for this process is of great interest. Currently, the industrial HDT of FCC gasoline consists of two stages and the creation of a new catalyst for one-stage HDT will make this process more efficient. Recently, our group has developed the CoMo/Al2O3-ASA catalyst and studied the influence of Si/Al ratio on the target reactions of HDT process. Despite the high selectivity and activity, the catalyst with ASA is not applicable in industry because of its low strength. The present work moves forward to study the influence of the ASA content in the catalyst support and clarify the possibility to develop the catalyst that combines high activity and selectivity in HDT reactions with successful performance. Here we show that the CoMo catalyst with ASA/Al2O3 molar ratio 1/1 in the support is the best combination for FCC gasoline hydrotreatment due to exceptional properties of the catalyst composition.

Synthesis and Thermoelectric Properties of Skutterudite CoSb3 (Skutterudite CoSb3의 합성 및 열전특성)

  • Binary skutterudite $CoSb_3$ compounds were prepared by the arc melting and hot pressing processes and their thermoelectric properties were investigated in the range from 300 to 600 K. Annealing effect was correlated to phase transformation and homogenization. Thermoelectric properties of the arc-melted and hot-pressed $CoSb_3$ were discussed and compared. Undoped intrinsic $CoSb_3$ prepared by the arc melting showed p-type conduction, while it showed metallic behavior with increasing measuring temperature. However, hot pressed specimens showed n-type conduction, possibly due to Sb evaporation. Thermoelectric properties were remarkably improved by annealing In vacuum and they were closely related to phase transformation.

  • In order to use the symbiotic bacteria from ethomophatogenic nematodes as a biological control agent for agriculture, the cultural condition for maintaining phase I and antifungal activity was investigated. Symbiotic bacteria (SB) 1 stain from nematodes were selected from the three strains isolated from entomopathogenic nematodes. The growth of the SB 1 strain in NB, TSB, TY and YS medium was higher than that of the SB 2 and SB 3 strain. The packed cell volume of the SB 1 strain was reduced in NB medium which showed radical pH change. Phase I of the SB 1 strain was maintained in TSB medium after being stored for 2 weeks at $4^{\circ}C$. Culture broth with the SB 1 strain in TSB medium for 6 days and 7 days showed antifungal activities against Rhizoctonia solani KACC 40142, Botrytis cinerea Pers. KACC 40854, and Botrytis cinerea Pers. KACC 41008. Culture broth with the SB 1 strain in TSB medium containing 100 mM L-proline for 5 days showed antifungal activities against Rhizoctonia solani KACC 40142, and Botrytis cinerea Pers. KACC 40854.

  • Sn-filled and Ni-doped $CoSb_3$ skutterudites were prepared by encapsulated induction melting, and their filling and doping effects on thermoelectric properties were investigated. Single phase ${\delta}-CoSb_3$ was successfully obtained by encapsulated induction melting and subsequent heat treatment at 823K for 5 days. Nickel atoms acted as electron donors by substituting cobalt atoms. Thermoelectric properties were remarkably improved by Sn filling and Ni doping.

  • It has been reported that safflower seeds have preventive effects against osteoporosis. Recently, safflower buds (SB) were found to have more useful functional ingredients than safflower seeds. In the current study, we evaluated the anti-osteoporosis effects of SB diet in ovariectomized (OVX) rats. The rats were divided into five groups; sham operated group, OVX alone group, OVX plus $17{\beta}$-estradiol ($E^2$ $10{\mu}g/kg$, i.p.) and OVX plus SB diet feeding group (0.3% or 1%). Feeding of SB diet (0.3% or 1%) to OVX rats markedly increased bone mineral density (BMD) of femurs, compared to the OVX group. The OVX rats exhibited a marked increase in trabecular separation (Tb.Sp) and this change was inhibited by the feeding of SB diet, similar to that seen with OVX+E2 group. Moreover, feeding of SB diet to OVX rats decreased the markers of bone turnover, including osteocalcin and alkaline phosphatase (ALP). These results suggest that SB extract has a bone sparing effect in OVX-induced trabecular bone loss and prevents deterioration of bone microarchitecture by suppressing the rate of bone turnover. Therefore, SB may be useful for preserving bone mass and structure in estrogen deficient women with a potential role in reducing postmenopausal osteoporosis.

  • Electrical properties in the ZnO-Bi2O3-CoO-Zn7Sb2O12 system were investigated with Zn7Sb2O12 content (0.1~2 mol%). The increase of the Zn7Sb2O12 content inhibited the grain growth of ZnO, which showed a narrow grain size distribution of ZnO. The breakdown voltage (Vb) increased markedly with 1 mol% Zn7Sb2O12 addition due to the grain growth control behaviour of the Zn7Sb2O12 . The nonlinear I-V characteristic was significantly influenced by the Zn7Sb2O12 content (or Bi2O3/Zn7Sb2O12 ratio). Addition of 0.5 mol% Zn7Sb2O12 showed the highest nonlinear coefficient ($\alpha$) of 43. The leakage current in prebreakdown region was decreased with increasing Zn7Sb2O12 content.

  • The encapsulated induction melting and hot pressing were employed to prepare Fe-doped $CoSb_3$ skutterudites and their thermoelectric properties were investigated. Single phase $\delta-CoSb_3$ was successfully obtained by the subsequent heat treatment at 773K for 24 hours. Iron atoms acted as electron acceptors by substituting cobalt atoms. Thermoelectric properties were remarkably improved by the appropriate doping. $Co_{0.7}Fe_{0.3}Sb_3$ was found as an optimum composition for best thermoelectric properties in this work.

  • Sn-filled and Fe-doped $CoSb_3$ skutterudites were synthesized by encapsulated induction melting. Single ${\delta}$-phase was successfully obtained by subsequent annealing and confirmed by X-ray diffraction analysis. Temperature dependences of Seebeck coefficient, electrical resistivity and thermal conductivity were examined from 300 K to 700 K. The positive Seebeck coefficient confirmed the p-type conduction. Electrical resistivity increased with increasing temperature, which shows that the $Sn_zCo_3FeSb_{12}$ skutterudite is highly degenerate. Thermal conductivity was reduced by Sn-filling because the filler atoms acted as phonon scattering centers in the skutterudite lattice. Thermoelectric figure of merit was enhanced by Sn filling and its optimum filling content was considered to be z=0.3 in the $Sn_zCo_3FeSb_{12}$ system.

  • One disadvantage of deep cycle flooded lead-acid batteries is increasing water loss caused by use of (+) Pb-Sb / (-) Pb-Sb alloy grid. Water loss is generated by the emission of hydrogen gas from the (-) electrode during battery charging. In this paper, we maintain cycle life aspect through the development of hybrid flooded lead-acid batteries to which a (+) Pb-Sb / (-) Pb-Ca grid is applied and deal with the improvement of water loss. The amount of water loss compared to that of the (-) Pb-Sb grid decreased when Ca was added to the (-) Pb grid. For the (-) Pb-Ca grid, it was confirmed that the time to reach 0.0 V, at which water decomposition occurs, was increased compared to that of the (-) Pb-Sb grid at the NPV (Negative Potential Voltage). In the cycle life test conducted with the BCI (Battery Council International) standard, compared to the (+) Pb-Ca grid, the (+) Pb-Sb grid increased the life cycle of the batteries and the (+) Pb-Ca grid showed an early end of life due to PbO corrosion layer generation, as determined through SEM / EDS and Tear Down analysis. In conclusion, by addition of Sb to (+) Pb grid and Ca to (-) Pb grid, we developed a hybrid flooded lead-acid battery that meets user requirements to improve water loss characteristics and preserve cycle life characteristics.
