  • Populus euramericana has been identified as a possible species for use for phytoremediation of landfills. To identify the effects of waste leachate on the growth and physiological characteristics of Populus euramericana. four different treatments were applied to Populus euramericana seedlings: leachate solution (100% leachate). 25% dilution (75% leachate: 25% water. v/v), 50% dilution (50% leachate: 50% water. v/v) and control (100% tab water) were applied to Populus euramericana. Treatment with waste leachate significantly stimulated Populus euramericana height. diameter at root collar and biomass production relative to the water control. Chlorophyll contents. photosynthesis and transpiration of leachate irrigated-trees were significantly higher than those of water control. These results suggested that poplar could be a suitable species for phytoremediation in landfills because these species showed good growth performance and were capable of taking up waste leachate.

  • Recombinant Arabidopsis non-specific lipid transfer proteins (nsLTPs) was purified from yeast. In order to determine the effect of nsLTPs for an production of anthocyanin in perilla leaves, ‘Manchudlggae’ cultivar was grown at pots that had been applied with different concentration of nsLTPs. The anthocyanin content in AtnsLTP treated leaves increased above two-fold higher than that in control. Also chlorophyll content was increased 16%. It was presumed that AtnsLTPs could be applied to increase high quality of perilla leaves.

  • This Study was designed to know the growth Status under various photoperiod using Zoysia matrella. The experimental plots were split into such groups as control (full sunlight) 3hour, 6hour and 9hour photoperiod by three replication of completely randomized design. Chlorophyll content was analyized by mackine method and total soluble sugar by anthrone method. The result obtained from this experiment was as fol1 lows ; l. Dry weight was high in the control and 9hour plots. Its decrease remarkably occured in the short day plots 2. Leaf growth woes remarkaly decreased by short day condition. Six hour was considered as critical duration for leaf growth. 3. The growth of rhizome in the 9hour and control plots was good. New development of rhizome in the' short day plots was very slow compare to the control plot. 4. Chlorophyll content was high at l8 days after transplanting and then decreased. Its content in the short day plots severely decreased. 5. The content of soluble sugar in the control was low at early growth stage and high at late growth stage. It was found that the shorter the exposure time to sunlight, the higher the ratio of sugar content.

  • In the present study, the oxidative stability of Korean evening primrose oil (EPO) stored in various conditions, i.e., dark, cool, fluorescent light and daylight irradiation were investigated. Furthermore difference between the compositional content of gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) of EPO and that of alpha-linolenic acid of soybean oil (SOY) undergoing various modes of oxidation was observed. The results of the present study were as follows: More rapid autoxidative reations of EPO than that of SOY in vairous conditions increased in order of daylight, fluorescent light, cool and dark. Espectially, autoxidative rates of EPO increased rapidly on exposure to daylight and fluorescent light. This probably was due to chlorophyll functioned as a photosensitizer resulting in rapid oxidation of the EPO during irrdadiation of light. However, there was no difference between compositional content of GLA in EPO and alpha-linolenic acid in SOY undergoing various modes of oxidation. Therefore, theripid oxidative rate of EPO could be due to the catalytic effect of the chlorophyll on the photoxidation and the free radical reaction of PUFA.

  • Jindong bay at the northwestern part of Jinhae bay suffers from the occurrence of red tides in summer every year. In order to study the management methods of coastal environments, an ecological numerical model has been developed. The model experiments was forecasted that the load of nutrients from the land and field concentration will be cut down per 10% each. When we cut down 57.2% nitrogen load in the inner bay and 38.4% phosphorous load in the outer bay of bottom layer of the nutrients load from land and field concentration, the seawater quality standard levels up first grade. When we cut down 86.5% nutrients in the inner bay and 93.0% nutrients in the outer bay, the concentration of chlorophyll a decreases below 3.2 $\mu\textrm{g}$/(equation omitted)(an individual concentration of phytoplankton : 10,000cel1/ml), i.e. the red tides do not occur.

  • The effects of various intensity of W-B on barley seeding were investigated by PS I and II activities and chlorophyll fluorescence. The Inhibitory effect of UV-B radiation on electron transport activity was Increased as the intensity of UV-B Irradiation was increased. Especially, PS I is more sensitive to UV-B radiation than PS I is. By the addition of uncle electron donor, DPC, to the chloroplasts of the barley seedlings treated with UV-B, the photoreduction of DCPIP was recovered by only 1 IBI on electron transport activity. However, the activity of PS II was Inhibited by 45% by the treatment with UV-B, but recovered it only 11% by the addition of DPC. These suggest that other sites besides the oxidation site of PS II may be affected more by UV-B Irradiation. As the intensify of UV-B was Increased, Fo was Increased while Fv was decreased, and thus Fv/Fm was decreased. This means that photochemical efficiency was reduced. With this parameters, it might be that UV-B radiation affected adversely to around PS II.

  • Background: Although cetrimonium bromide is widely used for its bactericidal effects, the safety of cetrimonium bromide remains controversial. Therefore, the phytotoxicity of cetrimonium bromide was tested to evaluate its acute toxicity to plants and possible toxicity to other organisms and the ecosystem. Results: The germination rates of two test species, Lactuca sativa and Brassica campestris, were significantly decreased after cetrimonium bromide treatment. Furthermore, cetrimonium bromide treatment at over 1 mg/L concentration significantly affected root elongation immediately after germination. In pot experiments with semi-mature plants, significantly decreased shoot elongation and chlorophyll content were detected in both species following cetrimonium bromide treatment. Cetrimonium bromide treatment also significantly increased the antioxidant enzyme activities of plants. Conclusion: Our results show that cetrimonium bromide is phytotoxic, and since phytotoxicity testing can imply potential toxicity in the environment, further studies of the environmental toxicity of cetrimonium bromide should be performed.

  • Photosynthetic characteristics of soybean leaves infected with Pseudomonas syringae pv. glycinea were investigated for 8 days. The difference in photosynthesis rate between healthy and diseased soybean leaves decreased for 2 to 4 days after inoculation and then increased. In respiration rate, healthy and diseased leaves showed the same tendency as photosynthetic rate. The stomatal resistance increased following Pseudomonas syringae pv. glycinea infection. The total chlorophyll content of the infected leaf was less than that of the uninfected. Pseudomonas syringae pv. glycinea infection induced the malformation of stacked grana in chloroplast. Dry matter production declined after infection.

  • The aim of the present study is to define and tentatively to interpret the distribution of polluted water released from Lake Sihwa into Yellow Sea using Landsat TM. Since the region is an extreme case 2 water, empirical algorithms for chlorophyll-a and suspended sediments have limitations. This work focuses on the use of multi-temporal Landsat TM. We applied PCA to detect evolution of spatial feature of polluted water after release from the lake. The PCA results were compared with in situ data, such as chlorophyll-a, suspended sediments, Secchi disk depth (SDD), surface temperature, radiance reflectance at six bands. The in situ remote sensing reflectance was analysed with PCA. On the basis of these In situ data we found good correlation between first Principal Component and Secchi disk depth ($R^2$=0.7631), although other variables did not result in such a good correlation. The problems in applying PCA techniques to multi-spectral remote sensed data are also discussed.
