  • This study was conducted to investigate the effects of light intensity and temperature on the physiological characteristics and growth of ginseng leaves. The higher the transmittance of the shade, the greater the area was decreased. In contrast, however, the amount of transpiration was increased. There was no significant difference in the number of stomata, but the size of stomata was distinctively decreased. The higher the transmittance of the shade, the more the contents of total chlorophyll, chlorophyll a and b, and cartooned were decreased. In contrast, however, the aye ratio of chlorophyll was increased. Regardless of temperature, the contents of chlorophyll providing maximum photosynthesis at the end of June and August were 2.1mg and 1 8mg/g F.W. respectively.

  • Phytoplankton community was investigated at the Paldang Dam Reservoir in the Mid-Han River by it's depth, in spring and summer known as the period of phytoplankton's blooming. It was only in summer that phytoplankton bloomed at the investigated area. 128 kinds of phytoplankton were identified and of them, diatoms were abundunt in spring but cyanophyta and chlorophyta were in summer. Because some species with high pollution index were observed in summer, it could be proved that the investigated area was polluted especially in summer. In spring shown the circulation period by vertical distribution pattern of chlorophyll-a and isothermal distribution pattern of water temperature, maximum value of phytoplankton standing crops appeared at the upper layer, except for surface layer. In summer shown the circulation period after the stagnation period by vertical distribution pattern of chlorophyll-a and immediate destruction after stratification of water temperature, maximum value of phytoplankton standing crops appeared at the lower layer. the layer at which the maximum value of chlorophyll-a appeared also accorded with that of phytoplankton standing crops. So, it could be approved that there existed a close relationship among phytoplankton standing crops, chlorophyll-a, and water temperature.

  • We have examined the bioaccumulation patterns and the ecophysiological responses (photosynthetic pigment and total antioxidative capacity) of Monochoria korsakowi exposed to various cadmium concentrations, one of major environmental pollutants. Cadmium ion contents in M. korsakowi increased significantly with higher cadmium concentration, and most of the accumulated cadmium was found in the root parts. Biomass of each part decreased with higher cadmium concentration. As cadmium treatment concentration was increased, chlorophyll a content was decreased, whereas chlorophyll b content was increased. However, the variations of total chlorophyll and carotenoid contents were not evident. Total antioxidative capacity in the leaves of cadmium treated M. korsakowi increased greatly with higher cadmium concentration. We considered these results as indicative of the ability of M. Korsakowi plants to take up cadmium from wetlands.

  • An average Korean known to ingest 3.4 times of the nitrate ADI level are found to have taken in 97% of nitrates through vegetables. This study analyzed the contents of nitrates and chlorophyll in organic Chinese cabbages, a major favorite vegetable for Koreans, with a view to lowering daily intake of nitrate. Our findings show that, in organically cultivated cabbages, the further outward the leaf was located, the more significantly the contents of nitrates increased, with the midrib and leaf blade showing positive relationship of $r=0.789^{**}$, and $r=0.659^{**}$, respectively. In the case of the midrib, the contents increased as high as 79 times ranging from 40ppm for the innermost leaf to 3, 177ppm for the outermost one, and when it comes to the leaf blade, the contents rose as high as 87 times, showing a range of 40 ~ 3,481ppm. Our findings also suggest that it is advisable to discard 1/3 of the outermost leaves before eating Chinese cabbages, since the outer leaves with known high contents of chlorophyll also have high contents of nitrates.

  • Irradiation of food is not only used for sanitation purposes but can be used for processing techniques to reduce or eliminate toxic or undesirable compounds on food. Irradiation wag effective to reduce the allergenicity of food by modification of the structure of proteins causing allergy reactions. Volatile N-nitrosmaine was reduced or eliminated by irradiation in the model system study and the breakdown products by irradiation did not recombine under human stomach conditions (pH 2,3, and 4,37$^{\circ}C$). The possibility of residual chlorophyll b reduction by irradiation was also found, and the model study indicated that irradiation be used to destroy chlorophyll b, resulting in protection from photooxidation in oil without acceleration of lipid oxidation during irradiation. In this paper, several on-going research projects for the application of food irradiation as a new processing technique are introduced, including reduction of food allergens, breakdown of volatile N-nitrosamine and residual chlorophyll b.

  • Observations were made to validate ocean color algorithms in the Ulleung Basin, East Sea in May 2000. Small scale and meso-scale surveys were conducted for the validation of ocean color products (nLw: normalized water-leaving radiance and chlorophyll concentration). There were discrepancies between SeaWiFS and in situ nLw showing the current aerosol models of standard SeaWiFS processing software are less than adequate (Gordon and Wang, 1994). Applying the standard SeaWiFS in-water algorithm resulted in an overestimation of chlorophyll concentration. This is because that CDOM absorption was higher than the estimated chlorophyll absorption. TSS concentration was also high. Therefore, the study region deviated from Case 1 waters. The source of these materials seems to be the entrainment of coastal water by the Tsushima Warm Current. Study of the bio-optical properties in other season is desirable.

  • In order to investigate the properties in distribution and movement of anchovy school catches by the lift net in the Kamak bay and their relation to the environmental factors, I. e., the amount of chlorophyll-a and turbidity were observed from June to August in 1997 and compared with the catch of anchovy by the lift net. The results obtained are summarized as follows;1) The amount of chlorophyll-a ranged from 4.0 to 12.0 mg/$m^3$ on July and from 3.0 to 15.0 mg/$m^3$ on August in horizontal distribution, the amount of chlorophyll-a ranged from 3.0 to 8.0mg/$m^3$ on June, from 5.5 to 11.6 mg/㎥ on July, and from 6.0 to 11.1 mg/$m^3$ on July and from 1.0 to 6.0ppm on August, respectively. 2) Anchovy school can be presurmed, they are come from north of bay, visited and distributed through east of bay at the middle of June. Moreover, they spreaded in all bay. Then gradually, when July arrive, they go to the south the nearest the coasts, and they are outflow through the south entrance of bay at the end of August.3) The catch of anchovy was highest on July, poor second on August, and lowest on June. The chlorophyll-a and the turbidity influenced remarkably on the distribution and movement of anchovy school and the influence of chlorophyll-a was alrgest.

The Distribution and Interannual Variation in Nutrients, Chlorophyll-a, and Suspended Solids in the Northern East China Sea during the Summer (동중국해 북부해역에서 여름동안 영양염, 엽록소, 부유물질의 분포 특성 및 연간 변화)

  • In order to find out the annual variations in the marine ecosystem of the East China Sea, temperature, salinity, nutrients, chlorophyll-a, suspended solids, and suspended particulate organic carbon were extensively investigated in the northern East China Sea during the Summer of 2003 and 2006. During the Summer of 2003, the northern East China Sea was not significantly affected by the input of fresh waters from the Changjiang River. During the Summer of 2006, however, fresh waters of the Changjiang River intruded into the western part of the study area where temperature, nitrate, and phosphate in the surface waters were higher than in the other areas, and salinity, silicate, and suspended solids in the surface waters were lower. As a result of the increase in nitrate and phosphate concentrations, concentrations of chlorophyll-a and suspended particulate organic carbon increased in the western part compared with the other areas. However, the depth-integrated chlorophyll-a concentrations measured during the Summer of 2003 were rather similar to those during the Summer of 2006, and not considerably different from those measured in the East China sea during the Summer of 1994 and 1998. Therefore, the depth-integrated chlorophyll-a concentrations have not significantly changed in the East China Sea over the last 12 years. The lower concentrations of silicate and suspended solids in the western part may be related to construction of the Three-Gorges Dam since the concentrations of silicate and suspended solids in fresh waters of the Changjiang River have significantly decreased after construction of the Three-Gorges Dam in June 2003.

  • Nutrients, chlorophyll-a, particulate organic carbon (POC), and environmental conditions were extensively investigated in the northern East China Sea (ECS) near Cheju Island during three seasonal cruises from 2003 to 2005. In spring and autumn, relatively high concentrations of nitrate ($2.6{\sim}12.4\;{\mu}mol\;kg^{-1}$) and phosphate ($0.17{\sim}0.61\;{\mu}mol\;kg^{-1}$) were observed in the surface waters in the western part of the study area because of the large supply of nutrients from deep waters by vertical mixing. The surface concentrations of nitrate and phosphate in summer were much lower than those in spring and autumn, which is ascribed to a reduced nutrient supply from the deep waters in summer because of surface layer stratification. While previous studies indicate that upwellings of the Kuroshio Current and the Changjiang (Yangtze River) are main sources of nutrients in the ECS, these two inputs seem not to have contributed significantly to the build-up of nutrients in the northern ECS during the time of this study. The lower nitrate:phosphate (N:P) ratio in the surface waters and the positive correlation between the surface N:P ratio and nitrate concentration indicate that nitrate acts as a main nutrient limiting phytoplankton growth in the northern ECS, contrary to previous reports of phosphate-limited phytoplankton growth in the ECS. This difference arises because most surface water nutrients are supplied by vertical mixing from deep waters with low N:P ratios and are not directly influenced by the Changjiang, which has a high N:P ratio. Surface chlorophyll-a levels showed large seasonal variation, with high concentrations ($0.38{\sim}4.14\;mg\;m^{-3}$) in spring and autumn and low concentrations ($0.22{\sim}1.05\;mg\;m^{-3}$) in summer. The surface distribution of chlorophyll-a coincided fairly well with that of nitrate in the northern ECS, implying that nitrate is an important nutrient controlling phytoplankton biomass. The POC:chlorophyll-a ratio was $4{\sim}6$ times higher in summer than in spring and autumn, presumably because of the high summer phytoplankton death rate caused by nutrient depletion in the surface waters.
