A large residual fraction of aliphatic components of diesel prevails in soil, which has adverse effects on the environment. This study identified the most bio-recalcitrant aliphatic residual fraction of diesel through total petroleum-hydrocarbon fractional analysis. For this, the strain Acinetobacter sp. K-6 was isolated, identified, and characterized and investigated its ability to degrade diesel and n-alkanes (C18, C20, and C22). The removal efficiency was analysed after treatment with bacteria and nutrients in various soil microcosms. The fractional analysis of diesel degradation after treatment with the bacterial strains identified C18-C22 hydrocarbons as the most bio-recalcitrant aliphatic fraction of diesel oil. Acinetobacter sp. K-6 degraded 59.2% of diesel oil and 56.4% of C18-C22 hydrocarbons in the contaminated soil. The degradation efficiency was further improved using a combinatorial approach of biostimulation and bioaugmentation, which resulted in 76.7% and 73.7% higher degradation of diesel oil and C18-C22 hydrocarbons, respectively. The findings of this study suggest that the removal of mid-length, non-volatile hydrocarbons is affected by the population of bio-degraders and the nutrients used in the process of remediation. A combinatorial approach, including biostimulation and bioaugmentation, could be used to effectively remove large quantities of aliphatic hydrocarbons persisting for a longer period in the soil.

In this paper, removal of diesel hydrocarbons (C$_{10}$-C$_{22}$) for dry and moist soil was investigated so that microwave-enhanced soil vapor extraction(SVE) reduced soil treatment time and raised remediation efficiency. Kinetic constants of diesel hydrocarbons with microwave energy were 7 times on dry soil and 1580 times on moist soil as much as those of SVE process without microwave energy. The diesel removals were 67.7~78.4% for $C_{10}$ and $C_{12}$, and 0~18.5% for $C_{14}$~C$_{22}$ for dry and moist soil with SVE process only. On the other hand, dry soil with microwave-enhanced SVE process showed 89.3~99.4% removal for $C_{10}$ and $C_{12}$ and 35.6~67.0% for hydrocarbons over $C_{14}$. All hydrocarbons(C$_{10}$~C$_{22}$) studied were significantly removed (93.6~99.8%) for moist soil with microwave-enhanced SVE process. Almost all diesel hydrocarbons were usually considered as semi-volatile compounds(SVOCs). Microwave-enhanced SVE process might have a great potential for remediation of soils contaminated with SVOCs.OCs.

In this study, a reliable number of soil samples for TPH fractionation was investigated in order to perform risk assessment. TPH was fractionated into volatile petroleum hydrocarbons (VPH) with three subgroups and extractable petroleum hydrocarbons (EPH) with four subgroups. At the study site, concentrations of each fraction were determined at 18 sampling points, and the 95% upper confidence limit (UCL) value was used as an exposure concentration of each fraction. And then, 5 sampling points were randomly selected out of the 18 points, and an exposure concentration was calculated. This process was repeated 30 times, and the results were compared statistically. Exposure concentrations of EPH obtained from 18 points were 99.9, 339.1, 27.3, and 85.9 mg/kg for aliphatic $C_9-C_{18}$, $C_{19}-C_{36}$, $C_{37}-C_{40}$, and aromatic $C_{11}-C_{22}$, respectively. The corresponding exposure concentrations obtained from 5 points were 139.8, 462.8, 35.1 and 119.4 mg/kg, which were significantly higher than those from 18 points results (p <0.05). Our results suggest that limited number of samples for TPH fractionation may bias estimation of exposure concentration of TPH fractions. Also, it is recommended that more than 30 samples need to be analyzed for TPH fractionation in performing risk assessment.
Removal efficiencies for diesel fuel and diesel hydrocarbons ($C_10$∼$C_22$) using microwave-enhanced SVE process were evaluated with dry and moist soil, respectively. Diesel removal rates of microwave-enhanced SVE process were 7 times for dry soil and 1580 times for moist soil as great as those of the SVE process without microwave heating. High dielectric property of water contents may accelerate the absorption of microwave energy into soil and thus vaporized the diesel fuel components drastically. The diesel removals were 67.7∼78.4% for $C_10$ and $C_12$, and 0∼18.5% for $C_14$∼$C_22$ for dry and moist soil with SVE process only. On the other hand, dry soil with microwave-enhanced SVE process showed 89.3∼99.4% removal for $C_10$ to and $C_12$ and 35.6∼67.0% for hydrocarbons over $C_14$. All hydrocarbons ($C_10$∼$C_22$) studied were significantly removed (93.6∼99.8%) for moist soil with microwave-enhanced SVE process.
The volatile flavor components were isolated from the roots of Saussurea lappa C.B. Clarke produced in Korea and China by the hydro distillation, and were analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS). 63 aroma compounds representing 87.47% of the total peak area were tentatively identified, including 13 alcohols (22.56%), 26 hydrocarbons (21.78%), 4 aldehydes (21.24%), 11 ketones (18.04%), 1 oxide (0.52%), 3 esters (0.16%), 1 carboxylic acid (0.02%) and 4 miscellaneous components (3.15%). 46 volatile flavor components of imported S. lappa C.B. Clarke constituted 65.69% of the total volatile composition were tentatively characterized, consisting of 1 aldehyde (23.32%), 24 hydrocarbons (16.69%), 10 ketones (15.84%), 7 alcohols (8.92%), 1 oxide (0.83%), 2 esters (0.07%) and 1 acid (0.02%). The predominant components of both essential oils were (7Z,10Z,13Z)-7,10,13-hexadecatrienal and dehydrocostuslactone.
The chlorination of $C_7H_16,\;C_8H_18,\;C_10H_22,\;and\;(Me_2CH)_2$ with N-Chlorosuccinimide, tert-BuOCl, $CCl_3SO_2Cl,\;CCl_4,\;CCl_3SCl,\; PCl_5,\;and\;Cl_2\;in\;C_6H_6\;or\;CS_2$ which both form loose complexes with $Cl_2$ atoms yielded mixtures of isomeric monochloroalkanes which were analyzed quantitatively. An isomer ratio differing from that known for the substitution of paraffinic hydrocarbons was observed. The isomer distribution observed is the result of the combined effects of the differing C-H dissociation energies of the different types of H atoms of the alkane and of the free energy of the attacking radical with polar effects of the attacking radical as well as of the hydrocarbon.

In this study, performance of 2 pure hydrocarbons R290 and R1270 was measured in an attempt to substitute R22 under 3 different temperature conditions. They were tested in a refrigerating bench tester with a hermetic rotary compressor. The test bench provided about 3.5 kW capacity and water and water/glycol mixture were employed as the secondary heat transfer fluids. All tests were conducted under the same external conditions resulting in the average saturation temperatures of $7/45^{\circ}C$ and $-7/41^{\circ}C$ and $-21/28^{\circ}C$ in the evaporator and condenser, respectively. Test results show that the coefficient of performance (COP) of these refrigerants is up to 11.54% higher than that of R22 in all temperature conditions. Compressor discharge temperatures were reduced by $14{\sim}31^{\circ}C$ with these fluids. There was no problem with mineral oil since the mixtures were mainly composed of hydrocarbons. The amount of charge was reduced up to 58% as compared to R22. Overall, these fluids provide good performance with reasonable energy savings without any environmental problem and thus can be used as long term alternatives for residential air-conditioning and heat pumping application.

In this study, performance of 2 pure hydrocarbons and 7 mixtures was measured in an attempt to substitute HCFC22 used in air-conditioners and heat pumps. The mixtures were composed of R1270 (propylene), R290 (propane), HFC152a, and RE170 (Dimethyl ether, DME). The pure and mixed refrigerants tested have GWPs of $3{\sim}58$ as compared to that of $CO_2$ and the mixtures are all near-azeotropic showing the gliding temperature difference (GTD) of less than $0.6^{\circ}C$. Thermodynamic cycle analysis was carried out to determine the optimum compositions and actual tests were performed in a laboratory heat pump test bench at the evaporation and condensation temperatures of 7.5 and $45.1^{\circ}C$ respectively. Test results show that the coefficient of performance (COP) of these mixtures is up to 5.7% higher than that of HCFC22. While propane showed 11.5% reduction in capacity, most of the fluids tested had the similar capacity to that of HCFC22. Compressor discharge temperatures were reduced by $11{\sim}17^{\circ}C$ with these fluids. There was no problem with mineral oil since the mixtures were mainly composed of hydrocarbons. The amount of charge was reduced up to 55% as compared to HCFC22. Overall, these fluids provide good performance with reasonable energy savings without any environmental problem and thus can be used as long term alternatives for. residential air-conditioning and heat pumping application.

Nitrogenous compounds in hydrolysate of skipjack processing by-product(SPB) was increased 6.4 times in amount comparing that of raw SPB. The major compounds in hydrolysate were anserine, histidine, leucine, hydroxyproline, arginine, phenylalanine and taurine, and composed 56.25% of total nitrogenous compounds. In fatty acid composition, the highest amount was saturated fatty acids in both samples. Polyunsaturated fatty acids such as $C_{20:5}$ and $C_{22:6}$ were increased after hydrolysis. A total of 99 volatile compounds was detected in raw and hydrolysate of SPB by vacuum simultaneous steam distillation-solvent extraction/gas chromatography/mass chromatorgraphy. Of these, 75 compounds were identified in raw SPB, while 72 compounds were identified in hydorlysate of SPB. There compounds were composed mainly of 28 aldehydes, 20 ketones, 19 alcohols, 5 nitrogen containing compounds, 5 aromatic hydrocarbons, 4 furans and 12 miscellaneous compounds. Levels of aldehydes and aromatic hydrocarbons decreased after hydrolysis, whereas heterocyclic compounds such as pyrazies, furans increased.
This paper is concerned about the performance of HCFC22 alternative refrigerants used in heat pumps and industrial chillers. A water-to-water breadboard heat pump with counter-current heat exchangers and a hermetic compressor was built to carry out the experiments with various refrigerants. For each test, more than 40 temperatures, 4 pressures, power input, mass flow rates of the heat transfer fluids were measured. Refrigerants tested were HCFC22, R290(Propane), an azeotrope of 45%Propane/55%R134a mixture, and a nonazeotropic mixture of Calor 50. All tests were conducted under ARI test A condition. It is found that the COP and capacity of propane were 18% and 2.5% higher than those of HCFC22 while the COP and capacity of 45%Propane/55%R134a mixture were 3.5% and 5.3% higher than those of HCFC22 respectively. Also the COP and capacity of Calor 50 were 17% and 7.8% higher than those of HCFC22. Compressor discharge temperatures of alternative refrigerants were roughly $35^{\circ}C$ lower than that of HCFC22 indicating that these refrigerants are good from the view point of compressor reliability. The charging amounts for the alternative refrigerants were reduced by 40-60% as compared to that of HCFC22. Overall, it can be said that hydrocarbon containing alternative refrigerants are excellent in thermodynamic performance but should be used with considerable care due to their flammability.
