WASP which is used to plan generation expansion has disadvantages that can't manage environmental factors and regional supply-demand planning. But with the effectuation of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and Kyoto Protocol, it is expected that reducing greenhouse gases affects power system in its long-term generation expansion planning. Therefore national countermeasures is needed. This paper formulates a mathematical model considering CO2 emission constraints and Emission Trading that will be enforced. This model is based on the MEFISET (Model for Economic Feasibility of Interstate Electrical Ties) which was made by Korea Energy Economics Institute and Hong-ik university and manages generation expansion planning. And this mathematical model is verified by studying a case system.
As the global warming becomes a serious environmental problem, studies of reducing $CO_2$ emission in power generation area are in progress all over the world. One of the carbon capture and storage(CCS) technologies is known as oxy-fuel combustion power generation system. In the oxy-fuel combustion system, the exhaust gas is mainly composed of $CO_2$ and $H_2O$. Thus, high-purity $CO_2$ can be obtained after a proper $H_2O$ removal process. In this paper, an oxy-fuel combustion cycle that recovers the waste heat of a high-temperature fuel cell is analyzed thermodynamically. Variations of characteristics of $CO_2$ and $H_2O$ mixture which is extracted from the condenser and power consumption required to obtain highly-pure $CO_2$ gas were examined according to the variation of the condensing pressure. The influence of the number of compression stages on the power consumption of the $CO_2$ capture process was analyzed, and the overall system performance was also investigated.
Hydrogen generation by the hydrolysis of aqueous sodium borohydride $(NaBH_4)$ solutions was studied using IRA-400 anion resin dispersed Pt. Ru catalysts and Lithium Cobalt oxide $(LiCoO_2)$ supported Pt, Ru and PtRu catalysts. The performance of the $LiCoO_2$ supported catalysts is better than the ion exchange resin dispersed catalysts. There is a marked concentration dependence on the performance of the $LiCoO_2$ supported catalysts and the hydrogen generation rate goes down if the borohydride concentration is increased beyond $10\%$. The efficiency of PtRu- $LiCoO_2$ is almost double that of either Ru-$LiCoO_2$ or Pt-$LiCoO_2$ for $NaBH_4$ concentrations up to $10\%$.
A new approach considering CO2 air pollution constraints in the long-term generation mix is proposed under uncertain circumstances. A characteristic feature of the presented approach in this paper is what effects give the air pollution constraints in long term best generation mix. Best generation mix problem is formulated by linear programming with fuel and construction cost minimization with load growth, reliability (reserve margin rate) and air pollutionconstraints. The proposed method accommodates the operation of pumped-storage generator. It was assumed in this study that the construction planning of the hydro power plants is given separately from the other generation plans. The effectiveness of the proposed approach is demonstrated by applying to the best generation mix problem of KEPCO-system, which contains nuclear, coal, LNG, oil and pumped-storage hydro plant multi-years.
Porous Co-P catalysts electroplated on Cu in chloride based solution with an addition of $NaH_2PO_2$ and glycine were developed for hydrogen generation from alkaline $NaBH_4$ solution. The microstructures of the Co-P catalysts and their hydrogen generation properties were analyzed as a function of cathodic current density and plating time during the electrodeposition. Amorphous Co-P electrodeposits with porous structure was formed on Cu at cathodic current density of $0.05\;A/cm^2$, and showed very high hydrogen generation rate in alkaline $NaBH_4$ solution due to an increase in the surface area of the catalyst as well as the catalytic activity. The Co-P catalyst, which was obtained at cathodic current density of $0.05\;A/cm^2$ for 5 min, exhibited the best hydrogen generation rate of 2290 ml/min.g-catalyst in 1 wt. % NaOH+10 wt. % $NaBH_4$ solution at $30^{\circ}C$.
The scale of 2.4 MW MCFC was taken to construct a high-efficiency and economical power generation system without CO2 emission into the atmosphere for utilizing its exhaust gas. The conventional steam turbine power generation system (STGS) was evaluated and the net generated power (NGP) was estimated to be only 133 kW and the STGS is not economically feasible. A CO2-caputuring repowering system was proposed, where low temperature steam (LTS) produced at HRSG by using exhaust gas from MCFC is utilized as a main working fluid of a gas turbine, and the temperature of LTS was raised by combusting fuel in a combustor by using pure oxygen, not the air. It has been shown that NGP of the proposed system is 264 kW, and CO2 reduction amount is 608 t-CO2/y, compared to 306 t-CO2/y of STGS. The CO2 reduction cost was estimated to be negligible small, even when the costs of oxygen production and CO2 liquefaction facilities etc. were taken into account.
In this study, the effects of the current pulsing conditions, on the spatter generation rate during the $CO_2$ gas metal arc welding (GMAW) were investigated. Normally using the inverter type power supply, of which the welding current waveform was regulated to reduce the spatter generation rate, but in this study pulsing was imposed on the welding current. Observation of the metal transfer phenomena during the pulsed current GMAS indicated that the droplet transfer from the electrode via the short circuit transfer and the repelling transfer mode could be minimized by selecting optimum combinations of pulsing parameters, which include base and peak current, base and pak duration. It was also demonstrated in this study that proper combinations of the pulsing parameters led to reduce generation of spatters during GMAW shielded by $CO_2$ gas.
This paper presents a method of generation rescheduling using Newton's Approach which searches the solution of the Lagrangian function. The generation fuel cost and $CO_2$ emission cost functions are used as objective function to reallocate power generation while satisfying several equality and inequality constraints. The Pareto optimum in the fuel cost and emission objectives has a number of non-dominated solutions. The economic effects are analyzed under several different conditions, and $CO_2$ emission reductions offered by the use of storage are considered. The proposed approach can explore more efficient and noninferior solutions of a Multiobjective optimization problem. The method proposed is applied to a 4-machine 6-buses system to demonstrate its effectiveness.
