Optimization for Small-scale Process of Swine Wastewater Treatment Using Rhodopseudomonas palustris KK14 (Rhodopseudomonas palustris KK14를 이용한 소규모 돈분폐수처리공정의 최적화)

  • To develop the treatment process of swine wastewater using Rhodopseudomonas palustris KK14 with high utilizable ability of organic acids, some operating conditions were investigated and optimized in flask-scale and laboratory-scale reactors. The optimal operating conditions in photosynthetic bacteria (PSB) reactor of semi-continuous type were obtained at HRT 6 day, 5% (v/v/day) seeding rate of PSB sludge and 10% (v/v/day) returning rate of PSB return sludge. Under the above operating condition, COD level of the wastewater (initial COD: 10 g/l) was reduced to about 1.7 g/l after 4 days treatment and MLSS was held constant at $4{\sim}5\;g$ per liter. In laboratory-scale process consisted of 5.2 l anaearobic digestion reactor and 15 l PSB reactor, the total removal rates of COD and BOD were increased to 95% and 96% by the continuous operation for 5.36 days, respectively, showing $3kg\;COD/m^3/day$ COD loading rate and 1.1 Kg COD/Kg MLSS/day sludge loading rate in PSB reactor. The offensive odor was considerably removed through the treatment process of swine wastewater.

Relationship between Pollution Factors and Environmental Variation in Waters around Masan Bay (마산만 주변 해역에서 오염인자와 해양환경변동과의 관계)

  • This study focuses on the relationship between pollution factors around Masan, Changwon and Chinhae city considerd as main pollution sources and marine environment in Masan bay of Korea. Water quality data measured In Jinhae bay and environmental investigation data in Masan, Changwon and Jinhae cities from 1981 to 1998 were used for this study. Annual means and standard deviations of COD, DIN and DIP concentrations from 1981 to 1998 showed that both their concentration and fluctuations were higher in the inner part of Masan bay (region A) than near Somodo (region B). Sediment dredging in Masan bay had been done from 1990 to 1994. After dredging, COD concentration has been decreasing In surface layer. Also water pollution was gradually spreaded from the inner part to the outer part of the bay due to the continuous inflow of domestic sewage and industrial wastewater. In the late of 1990s, the pollution was heavier. DIN and DIP concentrations were found to be increased by establishment of industry complex and decreased by sewage treatment plant near the city adjacent to Jinhae bay, 1993. The correlation between COD, DIN and DIP changes and neighbor cities' pollution sources were calculated From 1981 to 1998, correlation coefficient (r) was over 0.8 except for the bottom of region A From 1981 to 1998, r between the DIP concentration and population was over 0.65 except for the surface of region A, and the r between the DIP and the number of factories was over 0.6 too, in region B.

Treatment of an Authentic Textile-dyeing Wastewater Utilizing a Fluidized Biofilter and Hybrid Recirculating System Composed of the Fluidized Biofilter and a UV/photocatalytic Reactor (실제 혼합염색폐수의 유동상 시스템을 활용한 미생물처리와 하이브리드 재순환시스템처리)

  • A fluidized biofilter was filled with Pseudomonas sp. and Bacillus cereus/thuringiensis-fixed waste-tire crumb media and was run to treat authentic textile-dyeing wastewater mixed with alkaline polyester-weight-reducing wastewater. As a result, its removal efficiency of $COD_{Cr}$ and color were 75~80% and 67%, respectively. In addition, upon constructing hybrid-recirculating system composed of the fluidized biofilter and a 450 W-UV/photocatalytic reactor, only fluidized biofilter was run bypassing UV/photocatalytic reactor at stage I. Subsequently, the hybrid system was continuously run at stage II-i, ii and iii. At stage II-i, the total removal efficiency of $COD_{Cr}$ was enhanced to be 80~85%, compared to 75% at stage I, owing to 20~30% removal efficiency of the UV/photocatalytic reactor. However, at stage II-i, the total removal efficiency of color was enhanced to be 65~70%, compared to 45~65% at stage I, even though the removal efficiency of the UV/photocatalytic reactor was tantamount to merely 0~5%. As far as the removal efficiency of fluidized biofilter of the hybrid-recirculating system is concerned, its removal efficiency of color was enhanced by the synergy effect of the hybrid-recirculating system unlike $COD_{Cr}$. Besides, despite of the increase of hybrid-recirculating system-recycle ratio, the deactivation of photo-catalytic activity was scarcely observed to eliminate the color while its irreversible deactivation was observed to eliminate $COD_{Cr}$.

Correlation between Phytoplankton Dynamics and Water Quality in Paldang Reservoir (팔당호에서 식물플랑크톤 군집 동태와 수질과의 상관성)

  • This study was aimed to analyze the long-term fluctuation of water quality and phytoplankton dynamics of Paldang reservoir in Korea and to assess the relationship between algal bloom patterns and hydrological, limnological data. Diatoms in Paldang reservoir occurred continuously through the year. Blue- green algae occurred during the summer season (from June to Sept.), and the highest count was observed in July. Occurrence pattern of green algae was similar to that of blue-green algae. The rest of algae contained a lot of Cryptomonas spp. whose concentration was high from May to Aug. Dominant algal genera (>>7,000 cells $mL^{-1}$) in Paldang reservoir were Aulacoseira, Cyclotella, Microcystis, and Cryptomonas spp. Microcystis and Anabaena occurred during the summer season. Many different green algal genera were found in Paldang reservoir but their abundances were very low. There were some significant correlations (r>0.3, p<0.05) between algal taxa and water quality; diatoms and water temperature, TP:blue-green algae and water temperature, pH, DO saturation, COD, TP; green algae and water temperature, pH, DO saturation, COD, SS, TP. Furthermore, algal genera and water quality was significantly correlated (r>0.3, p<0.05) ; Aulacoseira and TN, TP; Anabaena and water temperature, DO saturation, COD, TP : Microcystisand water temperature, pH, DO saturation, TP; Coelastrum and COD, SS; Scenedesmus and water temperature, COD, TN, TP; Cryptomonas and DO saturation, TN. In Paldang reservoir, the water temperature had relatively big effect on blue-green algal bloom that was also dependant upon its hydrologic condition.

Effect of Ammonia Nitrogen Loading Rate on the Anaerobic Digestion of Slurry-typed Swine Wastewater (슬러리형 돈사폐수의 혐기성 소화시 암모니아 부하의 영향)

  • This research examined the effect of ammonia nitrogen loading rate(NVLR) on the anaerobic digestion of slurry-typed swine wastewater. The anaerobic reactor was used an upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) process. This UASB reactor was operated at a NVLR of $0.02{\sim}0.96kg{NH_4}^+-N/m^3/day$. The methane content showed the range of 73.3~77.9% during the steady state period. Free ammonia(FA) concentration increased over inhibition level as pH increase from 7.3 to 8.2. However, in consideration of methane content, methane producing bacteria (MPB) inhibition by FA and total ammonia(TA) was not observed. A stepwise increase of the NVLR resulted in a deterioration in the COD removal rate in UASB reactor. The COD removal rate were 60% for NVLR up to $0.55kg{NH_4}^+-N/m^3/day$. As the NVLR increased from 0.09 to $0.96kg{NH_4}^+-N/m^3/day$, the biogas production rate varied from 3.71 to 9.14L/d and the methane conversion rate of the COD varied from 0.32 to $0.20m^3CH_4/kg$ COD removed. Consequently, in considerations of FA concentration, COD removal rate, and $CH_4$ production rate, the UASB reactor must be operated to lower than $0.40kg{NH_4}^+-N/m^3/day$ of NVLR.

Effect of Algal Inoculation on COD and Nitrogen Removal, and Indigenous Bacterial Dynamics in Municipal Wastewater

  • The effects of algal inoculation on chemical oxygen demand (COD) and total nitrogen (TN) removal, and indigenous bacterial dynamics were investigated in municipal wastewater. Experiments were conducted with municipal wastewater inoculated with either Chlorella vulgaris AG10032, Selenastrum gracile UTEX 325, or Scenedesmus quadricauda AG 10308. C. vulgaris and S. gracile as fast growing algae in municipal wastewater, performed high COD and TN removal in contrast to Sc. quadricauda. The indigenous bacterial dynamics revealed by 16S rRNA gene amplification showed different bacterial shifts in response to different algal inoculations. The dominant bacterial genera of either algal case were characterized as heterotrophic nitrifying bacteria. Our results suggest that selection of indigenous bacteria that symbiotically interact with algal species is important for better performance of wastewater treatment.

Physical Parameter Measurement and Theoretical Target Strength Estimation of Juvenile Cod (Gadus macrocephalus)

  • The contrast (fish body to medium ratio) of density and sound speed were measured to estimate acoustic scattering from small juvenile cod (Gadus macrocephalus) with the Kirchhoff-Ray Mode backscatter model. The density contrast was measured by the density-bottle method and the sound speed contrast was estimated by the time of flight method. The results revealed that the measured density contrasts of juvenile cod varied between 1.003 and 1.029 (mean = 1.014, S.D. = 0.01). On the other hand, sound speed contrasts varied between 1.039 and 1.041 (mean = 1.041, S.D. = 0.001). The relationship between averaged target strength (TS) and total length (TL) established by the model were <$TS_{38kHz}$> = 20log(TL) - 68.8 and <$TS_{38kHz}$> = 20log(TL) - 69.4, respectively.

  • We studied sea water pollution by opening the water gate of Bunam Lake in Seosan City. SS and COD were simulated. If we control the flow rate to 100ton/s, and the gate opening time to 3 hours, SS of 50ppm can be clear with in 19hours. Also, COD of 8ppm can flow for 1 hour without damaging total sea water(COD less than 2ppm). Thus, If we control the flow rate and flow time, the fish cultivation will be free from danger of water pollution.

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to evaluate risk factors and symptoms in cemento-osseous dysplasia (COD) patients. Materials and Methods: In this study, 62 patients who were diagnosed histologically with COD were investigated from 2010 to 2020 at the author's institution. We compared clinical and radiological characteristics of symptomatic and asymptomatic patients. The factors were sex, age, lesion size, site, radiologic stage of lesion, apical involvement, sign of infection, and history of tooth extraction. Statistical analysis was performed using Fisher's exact test and the chi-square test. Results: COD was more prevalent in female patients. With the exception of three cases, all were focal COD. The majority of patients presented with symptoms when the lesion was smaller than 1.5 cm in size. Symptoms were observed when the apex of the tooth was included in the lesion or there was a local infection around the lesion. The history of tooth extraction and previous endodontic treatment were evaluated, and history was not a significant predictor for the onset of symptoms. Conclusion: In this study, risk factors associated with symptomatic patients were size of lesion, apical involvement, and local infection.

Evaluation of Effective Process Operation for the Texitile Dyeing Wastewater by Ferrous Solution and Hydrogen Peroxide

  • The purpose of this research is to evaluate the removal efficiencies of COD$\_$Cr/ and color for the dyeing wastewater by the different dosages of ferrous solution and H$_2$O$_2$ in Fenton process. In the case of H$_2$O$_2$ divided dosage for the Fenton's reagent 7:3 of H$_2$O$_2$ was more effective than 3:7 to remove COD$\_$Cr/ and color. The results showed that COD$\_$Cr/ was mainly removed by Fenton coagulation, where the ferric ions are formed in the initial step of Fenton reaction. On the other hand color was removed by Fenton oxidation rather than Fenton coagulation. The removal mechanism of COD$\_$Cr/ and color was mainly coagulation by ferrous ion, ferric ion and Fenton oxidation. The removal efficiencies were dependent on the ferric ion amount at the beginning of the reaction. However, the final removal efficiency of COD$\_$Cr/ and color was in the order of Fenton oxidation, ferric ion coagulation and ferrous ion coagulation. The reason of the highest removal efficiency by Fenton oxidation can be explained by the chain reactions with ferrous solution, ferric ion and hydrogen peroxide.
