  • In this study, a catalyst based on $Pt/Al_2O_3$ supported on Mg was prepared by a wet impregnation method to investigate the $CH_4-SCR$ reaction characteristics of various alumina supports. Alumina supported on $Pt/Al_2O_3$ catalyst was converted to an $Al_2O_3$ composite, and when Mg was added, oxygen species of the active metal Pt were controlled due to electrophobic characteristics. Oxygen-controlled Pt used as a reducing agent inhibited the oxidation of $CH_4$ to $CO_2$. The addition of Mg also promoted the adsorption of NO species and the conversion of NO to $NO_2$ due to the NOx storage property on the catalyst surface.

  • Thermodynamic consideration was performed for Alloy 617 exposed to an impure helium ($H_2$ 20pa, $H_2O$ 0.5pa, $CH_4$ 2pa and CO 5pa) at $950^{\circ}C$. Oxidation power was decreased in the order Al > Ti > Si > Cr > Mn. Decarburization and carburization reactions were available leading to carbon activity decrease and increase, respectively, depending on carbon and Cr activities. The thermodynamic prediction was compared with the experimental results obtained in similar conditions (($H_2$ 20pa, $H_2O$ 0.05pa, $CH_4$ 5pa and CO 2pa) and $950^{\circ}C$) by others for Alloy 617. The driving force for oxidation of Al, Ti and Si is very large to be oxidized at a given impure helium and the environment is actually carburizing towards the structural alloy, which is consistent with this work.

  • Thick films of $LaNiO_{3}$ having perovskite structure impregnated with indium and bismuth oxides have been used as sensing material for acetonitrile ($CH_{3}CN$) gas. The sensor response for $CH_{3}CN$ is quite good with an excellent recovery for partial pressure from 3 ppm to 20 ppm between 200 and $250^{\circ}C$. $LaNiO_{3}$ alone has exhibited low response, but after impregnation of $In_{2}O_{3}$ and $Bi_{2}O_{3}$ have given increased sensitivity even with 3 ppm partial pressure of $CH_{3}CN$ at $200^{\circ}C$. It is assumed that $CH_{3}CN$ is undergoing oxidation reaction on surface of the film.

  • The oxidation of various benzyl ethers and benzyl alkyl ethers to benzoates has been studied in two-phase system of $CH_3CO_2Et$ and aqueous NaOCl (6.6 mol eq.). The oxidant N-oxo-4-methoxy-2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidium bromide (N-oxoammonium salt) was prepared in situ and recycled by addition of 4-methoxy-2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl (0.03 mol eq., 4-methoxy-TEMPO), co-catalyst KBr (0.03mol eq.) and second oxidant NaOCl. Thus the catalytic amount of 4-methoxy-TEMPO was used. An adjustment of the pH value of below 8.0 was also required for this reaction with 2.5 hr of reaction time at 0∼5$^{\circ}C$. Under these conditions benzyl ethers were oxidized to benzoates. The selectivity of oxidation of benzyl alkyl ethers is dependent on the acidity of hydrogen and steric effect of alkyl group.

  • The use of fossil fuel and biogas production causes air pollution and climate change problems. Research endeavors continue to focus on converting methane and carbon dioxide, which are the major causes of climate change, into quality energy sources. In this study, a novel plasma-carbon converter was proposed to convert biogas into high quality gas, which is linked to photovoltaic and wind power and which poses a problem on generating electric power continuously. The characteristics of conversion and gas production were investigated to find a possibility for biogas conversion, involving parametric tests according to the change in the main influence variables, such as O2/C ratio, total gas feed rate, and CO2/CH4 ratio. A higher O2/C ratio gave higher conversions of methane and carbon dioxide. Total gas feed rate showed maximum conversion at a certain specified value. When CO2/CH4 feed ratio was decreased, both conversions increased. As a result, the production of solar fuel by plasma oxidation destruction-carbon material gasification conversion, which was newly suggested in this study, could be known as a possibly useful technology. When O2/C ratio was 0.8 and CO2/CH4 was 0.67 while the total gas supply was at 40 L min-1 (VHSV = 1.37), the maximum conversions of carbon dioxide and methane were achieved. The results gave the highest production for hydrogen and carbon dioxide which were high-quality fuel.

  • The purpose of this paper is to investigate the reforming characteristics and maximum operating condition for the hydrogen production by methane reforming using the compression ignition engine induced partial oxidation. An dedicated compression engine used for methane reforming was decided operating range. The partial oxidation reforming was investigated with oxygen enrichment which can improve hydrogen production, compared to general reforming. Parametric screening studies were achieved as $O_2/CH_4$ ratio, total flow rate, and intake temperature. When the variations of $O_2/CH_4$ ratio, total flow rate, and intake temperature were 1.24, 208.4 L/min, and $400^{\circ}C$, respectively, the maximum operating conditions were produced hydrogen and carbon monoxide. Under the condition mentioned above, synthetic gas were $H_2\;22.77{\sim}29.22%,\;CO\;21.11{\sim}23.59%$.

  • Two pilot-scale biocovers (PBCs) were installed in a landfill, and the methane ($CH_4$) concentrations at their inlets and outlets were monitored for 240 days to evaluate the methane removability. Consequently, the packing materials were sampled from the PBCs, and their potential $CH_4$ oxidizing abilities were evaluated in serum vials. The $CH_4$ concentration at the inlet of the biocovers was observed to be in the range of 23.7-47.9% (average = 41.3%, median = 42.6%). In PBC1, where a mixture of soil, earthworm cast, and compost (7:2:1, v/v) was employed as the packing material, the $CH_4$ removal efficiency was evaluated to be between 60.7-85.5%. In PBC2, which was filled with a mixture of soil, earthworm cast, perlite, and compost (4:2:3:1, v/v), the removal efficiency was evaluated to be between 29.2-78.5%. Although the packing materials had an excellent $CH_4$ oxidizing potential (average oxidation rate for $CH_4=180-199{\mu}g\;CH_4{\cdot}g\;packing\;material^{-1}{\cdot}h^{-1}$), $CH_4$ removal efficiency in PBC1 and PBC2 decreased to the range of 0-30% once the packing materials in the PBCs were clogged and channeled. Furthermore, seasonal effects exhibited no significant differences in the $CH_4$ removal efficiency of the biocovers. The results of this study can be used to design and operate real-scale biocovers in landfills to mitigate $CH_4$ buildup.

  • By utilizing a semi-empirical soot model, the applicability of the laminar flamelet concept for simulating the formation and oxidation of soot in the laminar diffusion flame has been studied. The source terms for two transport equations of the soot formation and oxidation are calculated in the mixture fraction/scalar dissipation rate space for laminar flamelets and stored in a library. In this study, emphasis is given to the interaction associated with radiation and soot formation. The radiative heat loss is obtained by solving the radiative transfer equation using the unstructured grid finite volume method with the WSGGM. The calculated temperatures and soot volume fractions agree relatively well with the experimental data and the previous numerical results of Kaplan et al. using the detailed chemistry.

  • Partial oxidation of methane was carried out by ceria-promoted Ni-substituted hydrotalcite-derived catalysts ($Ce_xNi_3$-HTlc ; x=$0.3{\sim}1.2$) in a fixed-bed reactor. The Ce/Ni ratio of 0.3/3 in the catalyst showed the best catalytic activity but the Ce/Ni ratio became higher above 0.3/3, the catalyst became less active in short-term tests. No ceria promoted catalyst was started to decrease $CH_4$ conversion after 20 h but the Ce/Ni ratio 0.3/3 catalyst was kept its stability in long-term tests.

  • The Co and Ni catalysts supported on $Al_2O_3$ for partial oxidation of methane producing hydrogen were synthesized using impregnation to incipient wetness. And the promotion effects of metals such as Mg, Ce, La and Sr in partial oxidation of methane over these $Co/Al_2O_3$ and $Ni/Al_2O_3$ were investigated. Reaction activity of these catalysts for the partial oxidation of methane was investigated in the temperature range of 450~$650^{\circ}C$ at 1 atm and $CH_2/O_2$ = 2.0. The catalysts were characterized by BET, XRD and SEM/EDX. The results indicated that the catalytic performance of these catalysts was improved with the addition of 0.2 wt% metal promoter. The Mg promoted $Co/Al_2O_3$ catalyst showed the highest $CH_4$ conversion and hydrogen selectivity at higher temperature than $500^{\circ}C$. The Ce and Sr promoted Ni catalysts superior to Co-based catalysts in the low temperature range. The addition of metal promoter to $Co/Al_2O_3$ and $Ni/Al_2O_3$ catalysts increased the surface area.
