  • In order to investigate field emission mechanism of undoped polycrystalline diamond films, diamond films with different structural properties were deposited by varying positive substrate bias and/or $CH_4$ concentration. When increasing $CH_4$ concentration and positive substrate bias voltage, nondiamond carbon content in diamond films increased. Increase of nondiamond carbon content with increasing substrate voltage is ascribed to increase of substrate and excess generation of $CH_n$ radicals. Field emission properties of undoped polycrystalline diamond films ere significantly enhanced with increasing nondiamond carbon content. For diamond films with a small amount of nondiamond carbon, electrons are emitted through diamond surface while for the films with a large amount of nondiamond carbon, electron emission occurs through diamond bulk as well as surface. From this study, depending on nondiamond carbon content two field emission mechanisms were suggested.

  • The particles were deposited on silicon wafers at low pressure:1[torr] from $CH_4-H_2$ mixed gas by using RF plasma CVD, and were investigated by SEM and Raman spectroscopy. The results are as following; Diamond particles were synthesized under $CH_4/H_2$ concentration of 1[%], however amorphous cabon particles were synthesized over $CH_4/H_2$ concentration of 2[%]. Growth rate of diamond particle was 2.2 times: $0.8[{\mu}m/h]$ as much as that synthesized at 25[torr].

  • Numerical simulations are performed at atmospheric pressure in order to understand the effect of additives on flame speed, flame temperature, the radical concentration, the NOx formation in freely propagating $CH_4/O_2/N_2$ flames. The additives used are carbon dioxide and hydrogen chloride which have a combination of physical and chemical behavior on hydrocarbon flame. In the flame established with the same mole of methane and additive, $CO_2$ addition significantly contributes toward the reduction of flame speed and flame temperature by the physical effect, whereas addition of HCl mainly does by the chemical effect. The impact of HCl addition on the decrease of the radical concentration is about 1.6-1.8 times as large as $CO_2$ addition. Hydrogen chloride addition is higher on the reduction of EINO than $CO_2$ addition because of the chemical effect of HCl.

  • Nano-sized $SnO_2$ thick films were prepared by a screen-printing method onto $Al_2O_3$ substrates. The sensing characteristics were investigated by measuring the electrical resistance of each sensor in a test box as a function of the detection gas. The nano-sized $SnO_2$ thick film sensors were treated in a $N_2$ atmosphere. The structural properties of the nano $SnO_2$with a rutile structure according to XRD showed a (110) dominant $SnO_2$ peak. The particle size of $SnO_2$:Ni nano powders at Ni 8 wt% was about 45 nm, and the $SnO_2$ particles were found to contain many pores according to the SEM analysis. The sensitivity of the nano $SnO_2$-based sensors was measured for 5 ppm $CH_4$ gas and $CH_3CH_2CH_3$ gas at room temperature by comparing the resistance in air with that in the target gases. The results showed that the best sensitivity of $SnO_2$:Ni and $SnO_2$:Co sensors for $CH_4$ gas and $CH_3CH_2CH_3$ gas at room temperature was observed in $SnO_2$:Ni sensors doped with 8 wt% Ni. The response time of the $SnO_2$:Ni gas sensors was 10 seconds and recovery time was 15 seconds for the $CH_4$ and $CH_3CH_2CH_3$ gases.

  • Objective: This study aimed to examine the relaxation effects and underlying mechanisms of Cynomorii herba (CH) extract in isolated rabbit corpus cavernous tissues. Methods: We experimented with CH extract (0.01-3.0 mg/mL). Nω-nitro-L-arginine (L-NNA) was experimented before the CH extract to contracted strips induced by phenylephrine (PE, 1 μM)and compared with nonexperimented. In addition, we experimented with calcium chloride (Ca2+, 1 mM) after pretreatment of the CH extract in Ca2+-free Krebs-Ringer solution to contracted strips induced by PE. The cell viability and nitric oxide (NO) concentration of human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) were measured by an methylthiazol-2-yl-2, 5-diphenyl tetrazoliumbromide (MTT) assay and Griess reagent system. The ratio of smooth muscles to collagen fibers, in addition to eNOS- and PDE-5-positive reactions, was examined by histochemical and immunohistochemical staining. Results: The CH extract significantly induced the relaxation of the cavernous strips, and the pretreatment with L-NNA inhibited CH extract-induced relaxation. The L-NNA pretreatment reduced the increased contraction induced by the addition of Ca2+in Ca2+-free solution. Furthermore, the NO concentration of the HUVECs increased. When the CH extract was applied to the corpus cavernosum of the penis (CCP) of Sprague Dawley rats, the ratio of smooth muscles to collagen fibers by PE and the formation of eNOS around the helicine artery increased. However, the CH extract treatment decreased PDE-5 positive reactions. Conclusions: These results show that the relaxation effects induced by the CH extract are associated with the suppression of the influx of extracellular Ca2+ via the production of NO and eNOS and inhibition of PDE-5.

  • BACKGROUND: Gypsum($CaSO_4{\cdot}2H_2O$) is known as an ideal amendment to improve soil quality of the reclaimed coastal land. Since gypsum has very high concentration of electron acceptor like ${SO_4}^{2-}$, its application might be effective on reducing $CH_4$ emission during rice cultivation, but its effect has not been studied well. METHODS AND RESULTS: The effect of gypsum on $CH_4$ emission and rice growth characteristics was studied by pot test, which was packed by reclaimed paddy soils collected from Galsa, Hadong, Gyeongnam province. Chemical-grade gypsum was applied in two soils having EC 2.25 and 9.48 dS/m at rates of 0, 0.5, 1.0 and 2.0%(wt/wt). $CH_4$ emission was characterized a week interval by closed chamber method during rice cultivation. $CH_4$ emission rate was significantly decreased with increasing salt accumulation and gypsum application levels. With increasing gypsum application, dissolved ${SO_4}^{2-}$ concentration in the leachate water was significantly increased, which might have suppressed $CH_4$ production in soil. Total $CH_4$ flux was dramatically decreased with increasing gypsum application. In contrast, rice yield was increased with increasing gypsum application and then achieved maximum productivity at 1.0% gypsum application in two soils. CONCLUSION(s): Gypsum is a very good soil amendment to suppress $CH_4$ emission in reclaimed coastal paddy soils, and improve rice productivity and soil properties. The optimum application level of gypsum is assumed at ca. 1% to improve soil productivity with reducing effectively $CH_4$ emission during rice cultivation.

  • In order to investigate the hypocholesteremic effect of soybean perptides, soybean protein(ISP), casein(CNP), their peptic hydrolyzates fractionated by acid precipitation at different pH's(SHT, SH8, SH6, SH4, CHT, CH5, CH4) and amino acid mixtures of the same composition as the proteins(SAA, CAA) were fed to rats and the concentration of serum cholesterol was measured. Then in vitro digestibility and molecular weight distribution of the peptides by pepticpancreatic hydrolysis was measured by FPLC. The lower the in vitro digestibility of peptides is, the lower the concentration of serum cholesterol becomes(r=0.986) and the higher the ratio of macropeptides is, the lower the concentration of serum cholesterol becomes(r=-0.932) in rats. These results suggest that the in vitro digestibility of peptides has close relationship to the concentration of serum cholesterol in rats and non-digestible meacropeptides or polypeptides especially more than 1 kDa, formed through digestion in gut, may lower the serum cholesterol in rats.

  • An adsorption process to recover the pure $CH_4\;and\;CO_2$ from its mixture was examined. In this study, activated carbon fibers were used as a selective adsorbent. The activated carbon fibers has 78~94% micropore volume and 10.5~20.3${\AA}$ narrow pore size, and showed high adsorption rate and the good selectivity for $CO_2$ under the ambient pressure. The ACF with high surface area showed short mass transfer zone and long breakthrough time and, its adsorption capacity depended on the microporosity. Compared with single component adsorption, the amount adsorbed $CO_2$ on ACF increased by the roll-up of $CH_4$ in mixed gases. The adsorption selectivity increased as now rate and $CO_2$ concentration of mixed gases increased, showing 5.2 selectivity for 75% $CO_2$ concentration.

  • To compare reduction reactivity of oxygen carrier particles, $CH_4$ combustion characteristics were measured and investigated in a bubbling fluidized bed reactor with increasing $CH_4$ concentration from 10 to 100 %. Among five oxygen carriers (OC-1, OC-2, SDN70, C14, C28), OC-1, OC-2, SDN70 particles were selected as better oxygen carriers from the viewpoints of fuel conversion and $CO_2$ selectivity. However, some oxygen carriers showed lower fuel conversion and $CO_2$ selectivity even though they have high oxygen transfer capacity. Therefore, we could conclude that not only TGA tests to measure the oxygen transfer capacity but also fluidized bed tests to analyze exhaust gas concentration should be performed to select better oxygen carrier without misunderstanding of carriers reactivity.

  • The effect of heat loss rate on NOx formation of $CH_4/air$premixed flame were examined numerically in a perfectly stirred reactor. The following conclusions were drawn. Under the adiabatic wall condition, an increase in the residence time causes a remarkable increases in NOx emission. Under the heat loss conditions, however, NOx decreases significantly as the heat transfer coefficient and residence time increase. As the heat loss rate increases, Thermal NO mechanism and Re-burning NO mechanism play an important role in the NOx reduction, but Prompt NO mechanism and $N_2O$-intermediate NO mechanism lead to the increase in NOx production. Although the NOx formation is actually related to complex NOx mechanism with the changes in the heat transfer coefficient and residence time, it was found that NOx concentration can be represented by independent Thermal NO mechanism. From these results, new NOx correlation combined with the heat loss rate and residence time was suggested for predicting the NOx concentration in a practical $CH_4/air$premixed combustor.
