Molecular dynamics simulations were performed to study interface structures between an $Al_2O_3$ crystalline phase and a interface phase of $CaAl_2Si_2O_8$. We calculated atomic structures and excess interface energies in systems with different thicknesses of the interface film. It was found that excess interface energies at first readily decreased with increasing film thickness, but increased for larger thicknesses of more than 2 nm. The excess energies of $Al_2O_3/CaAl_2Si_2O_8$ interfaces exhibit a minimum at a thickness around 1 nm. In this range of film thicknesses, the atoms in the interface film show a short-range ordered structure and slow diffusion rather than the random structure and rapid diffusion expected to an observation of an equilibrium thickness for interface films in ceramics.
CH4/CO2 dry reforming was carried out to make syn gas on the Ni/Al2O3 catalysts calcined at different temperatures. The Ni/Al2O3 (850 $^{\circ}C)$ catalyst gave good activity and stability w hereas the Ni/Al2O3 $(450^{\circ}C)$ catalyst showed lower activity and stability. The NiO/Al2O3 catalyst calcined at $850^{\circ}C$ for 16 h (Ni/Al2O3 $(850^{\circ}C))$ formed the spinel structure of nickel aluminate, which was confirmed by TPR. The carbon formation rate on the Ni/Al2O3 $(850^{\circ}C)$ catalyst was very low till 20 h, and then steeply increased with reaction time without decreasing the activity for CH4 reforming. The Ni/Al2O3 $(450^{\circ}C)$ catalyst showed high carbon formation rate at the initial reaction time and then, the rate nearly stopped with continuous decreasing the activity for CH4 reforming. Even though the amount of carbon deposition on the Ni/Al2O3 $(850^{\circ}C)$ catalyst was higher than that on the Ni/Al2O3 $(450^{\circ}C)$ catalyst, the activity for CH4ing was also high, which could be attributed to the different type of the carbon formed on the catalyst surface.

We have successfully demonstrated of metal-insulator-semiconductor (MIS) capacitors with $Al_2O_3/p-Si$ structures. The $Al_2O_3$ film was grown at $200^{\circ}C$ on H-terminated Si wafer by atomic layer deposition (ALD) system. Trimethylaluminum [$Al(CH_3)_3$, TMA] and $H_2O$ were used as the aluminum and oxygen sources. A cycle of the deposition process consisted of 0.1 s of TMA pulse, 10 s of $N_2$ purge, 0.1 s of $H_2O$ pulse, and 60 s of $N_2$ purge. The 5 nm thick $Al_2O_3$ layer prepared on Si substrate by ALD exhibited excellent electrical properties, including low leakage currents, no mobile charges, and a good interface with Si.

Mechanical properties of (10%$AI_20_3{\cdot}SiO_2$+5%Ni)/Al hybrid composites fabricated by the reaction squeeze casting were compared with those of (15%$AI_20_3{\cdot}SiO_2$)/Al composites. Intermetallic compound formed by reaction between molten aluminum and reinforcing powder was uniformly distributed in the Al matrix. These intermetallic compounds were identified as $Al_3$NI using EDS and X-ray diffraction analysis. Microhardness and flexural strength of hybrid composites were higher than that of (15%$AI_20_3{\cdot}SiO_2$)/Al Composite. In-Situ fracture tests were Conducted on (15%$AI_20_3{\cdot}SiO_2$)/Al Composites and (10%$AI_20_3{\cdot}SiO_2$+5%Ni)/Al hybrid composites to identify the microfracture process. It was identified from the in-situ fracture test of (10%$AI_20_3{\cdot}SiO_2$+5%Ni)/Al composites, microcracks were initiated mainly at the short fiber / matrix interfaces. As the loading was continued, the crack propagated mainly along the separated interfacial regions and the well developed shear bands. It was identified from the in-situ fracture test of (10%$AI_20_3{\cdot}SiO_2$+5%Ni)/Al hybrid composites, microcracks were initiated mainly by the short fiber/matrix interfacial debonding. The crack proceeded mainly through the intermetallic compound clusters
The dielectric properties and synthesis of $LaAlO_3$ ceramics from mixtures of $La_2O_3-Al_2O_3$ (LAO) and $La_2O_3-Al(OH)_3$(LAH) via grinding process were investigated. The single phase $LaA1O_3$of LAO and LAH powders were formed at $1300^{\circ}C$ and $1000^{\circ}C$, respectively. A non-reacted $La_2O_3$ existing in calcined powder was changed to La(OH)$_3$by moisture in the air, and their samples were worse than those of the samples made from a $LaA1O_3$single phase powder. The densities of LAO samples sintered at 150$0^{\circ}C$ for 4 h and LAH samples sintered at $1400^{\circ}C$ for 4 h were 97.3% and 98.3% of theory density, respectively. Grains of LAH sample showed uniformity and their sizes were 0.75 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$, and LAO samples showed non-uniformity and their sizes were 4-5 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. Dielectric constant of LAO and LAH samples were the same value (≒22), however dielectric loss of LAH sample (0.0003) were lower than that of LAO sample(0.001)due to grain size.
The oxide scales formed on $Ni_3Al$-7.8%Cr-1.3%Zr-0.8%Mo-0.025%B after oxidation at 900, 1000 and 110$0^{\circ}C$ in air were studied using XRD, SEM, EPMA and TEM. The oxide scales consisted primarily of $NiO,\; NiAl_2O_4,\;{\alpha}-Al_2O_3,\; monoclinic-ZrO_2,\; and \;tetragonal-ZrO_2$. The outer layer of the oxide scale was rich in Ni-oxides, whereas the internal oxide stringers were rich in Al-oxides and $ZrO_2$. Within the above oxide scales, Cr and Mo tended to exist as dissolved ions.
The catalytic oxidation of 1,2-dichloribenzene (1,2-DCB) and simultaneous catalytic reduction of nitrogen oxides over the single catalyst has been investigated over various metals (Ru, Mn, Co and Fe) supported on $Al_2O_3$ and $CeO_{2}$. The activity of the different catalysts for catalytic oxidation of 1,2-dichloribenzene depended on the used metal, Ru/Co/$Al_2O_3$, Mn-Fe/CeO2 and Cr/$Al_2O_3$ (commercial catalysts) being the most actives ones. In the catalytic oxidation of chlorobenzene (CB), Ru/Co/$Al_2O_3$ is better than Pt-Pd/$Al_2O_3$, which is the well-known catalyst good for VOC oxidation. Furthermore, it has a good durability on the deactivation by $Cl_2$ and sulfur. For nitrogen oxides (NOx) removal, NOx conversion was 70% at $260^{\circ}C$.

The effect of monoclinic $ZrO_2$(pure) and tetragonal $ZrO_2$ containing 5.35wt% $Y_2$$O_3$(Y-TZP) addition on the mechanical properties and thermal shock resistance of $Al_2$$O_3$ ceramic were investigated. The addition of $ZrO_2$(m) and Y-TZP increased sintering density of $Al_2$$O_3$. The vickers hardness increased with increasing the volume fraction of Y-TZP going through a maximum at 20wt%. The hardness of the specimens was found to be depend on the sintering density. With increasing the volume fraction of $ZrO_2$(m) and Y-TZP, the fracture toughness of the composite is increased. This result may be taken as evidence that toughening of ${Al_2}{O_3}$ can also be achieved by the transformation toughening and microcrack toughening of $ZrO_2$. The property of the& shock for ${Al_2}{O_3}$-$ZrO_2$ composites was improved by increasing the volume fraction of monoclinic $ZrO_2$(pure).Grain size increased with increasing the volume fraction of $ZrO_2$.
This study aims at investigating the wear properties of thermally sprayed $Al/Al_2O_3$ metal matrix composite(MMC) coating against different counterparts. $Al/Al_2O_3$ MMC coatings were fabricated using a flame spray system on an Al 6061 substrate. Dry sliding wear tests were performed using the sliding speeds of 0.2m/s and the applied loads of 1 and 2 N. AISI 52100, $Al_2O_3$, $Si_3N_4\;and\;ZrO_2$ balls(diameter: 8mm) were used as counterpart materials. Wear properties of $Al/Al_2O_3$ MMC coatings were analyzed using a scanning electron microscope(SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). It was revealed that wear properties of $Al/Al_2O_3$ composite coatings were much influenced by counterpart materials. In the case of AISI 52100 used as counterparts, the wear rate of composites coating layer increased according to the increase of the applied load. On the contrary, in the case of ceramics used as counterparts, the wear rate of composites coating layer decreased according to the increase of the applied load.
Advanced zinc-based sorbents, ZA, for Hot Gas Desulfurization (HGD) process in Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle (IGCC) systems were formulated with $Al_2$O$_3$ as support to enhance the reactivity and their reactive characteristics was also investigated in this study. Changes in the physical and chemical properties of the sorbents based on both the mole ratios of ZnO/Al$_2$O$_3$ and the calcination temperatures were examined by a XRD. The results obtained in our desulfurization-regeneration cycle tests demonstrated that degradation of sorbents due to the heat generation could be improved through the optimization of the $Al_2$O$_3$ contents and of the calcination temperatures. From the durability study it is concluded that the prepared ZA sorbents with additives have the desirable features for HGD.
