자발연소반응을 이용한 (TiC+Al2O3)/Al 복합재료의 저온합성 (Low-temperature Synthesis of (TiC+Al2O3) Reinforced Al Matrix Composite Based on Self-combustion Reaction)

  • The formation of TiC and $Al_2O_3$ particles based on the self-combustion reaction of the $Al-TiO_2-C-CuO$ system in an Al alloy melt was investigated. With an adequate amount of CuO in the system, a spontaneous reaction occurred within the Al alloy melt at $850^{\circ}C$ and thereafter was self-maintained, producing an Al matrix composite reinforced with thermodynamically stable TiC and $Al_2O_3$ particles. TiC and $Al_2O_3$ particles contributed to a considerable increase in the strength and stiffness, demonstrating the feasibility of this method as a practical application for structural parts.

  • Al2O3/ZrO2 composites were prepared by precipitation method using Al2(SO4)3.18H2O, ZrOCl2.8H2O and YCl3.6H2O as starting materials and NH4OH as a precipitation agent. Al2O3/ZrO2 composites(series A) were prepared by mixing Al2O3 powder obtained by single precipitation method with ZrO2(+3m/o Y2O3) powder obtained by co-predipitation method. Al2O3/ZrO2 composites (series B) were prepared by co-precipitation method using the three starting materials. In all cases, the composition was controlled as Al2O3-15v/o ZrO2(+3m/o Y2O3). The composites of series A showed higher final relative densities than those of series B and tetagonal ZrO2 in all cases was retained to about 95% at room temperature. ZrO2 particles were coalesced more rapidly in grain boundary of Al2O3 than within Al2O3 grain. ZrO2 particles were located at 3-and 4-grain junction of Al2O3 and limited the grain growth of Al2O3. It was observed that MgO contributed to densification of Al2O3 but limited grain growth of Al2O3 by MgO was not remarkable. In all Al2O3/ZrO2 composites, exaggerated grain growth of Al2O3 was not observed and Al2O3/ZrO2 composites were found to have homogeneous microstructures.

  • The fabrication of $Al_2O_3/Al$ composites by pressureless infiltration technique was made to investigate the effects of processing variables such as content of Mg, processing temperature and time on the infiltration behavior of molten Al and microstructure. When the pure Al was infiltrated into mixtures of Mg and $Al_2O_3$ powder, processing temperature required to spontaneous infiltration was decreased and critical processing temperature and Mg content were $700^{\circ}C$ and 3wt% respectively. The content of Mg was found the most powerful variable for infiltration of molten Al. The infiltration ratio increased with Mg content and processing temperature, however the $Al_2O_3/Al$ composites which were fabricated by high Mg content and processing temperature resulted in non uniform dispersion of $Al_2O_3$ particles by excessive interfacial reaction. XRD pattern indicated that $MgAl_2O_4$ and AIN was observed at the interface of $Al_2O_3$ particles and in the Al matrix as reaction products.

  • Al2O3/SiC nanocomposites are fabricated through intensive ball milling to mix fine SiC particles uniformly with the Al2O3 powder. Another role of milling is to reduce particle sizes by crushing particles as well as agglomerates. However, balls are worn during ball milling and the sample powder mixtures pick up to weight loss of the balls. In this study, pressureless sintering was performed to obtain Al2O3/SiC nanocomposites. It was found that the wear rate of zirconia balls during milling was considerable, and the zirconia addition after even a few hours of ball milling could increase the sintering rates of the nanocomposites significantly. Thus, addition of ZrO2 changed the sintering behaviors as well as mechanical properties of Al2O3/SiC nanocomposites.

  • Ni coated $Al_2O_3$ composite was successfully Prepared by the electroless deposition Process. The average size of Ni particles coated on the $Al_2O_3$ matrix powder was about 20 nm. It was hard to find any reaction compound as an impurity at interface between $Al_2O_3$ and Ni particles after sintering. The characterization of microstructure crystal structure and fracture behavior of the sintered body were investigated using XRD, TEM and Victors hardness tester, and compared with those of the sintered $Al_2O_3$ monolithic body. Many dislocations were observed in the Ni phase due to the difference of thermal expansion coefficient between $Al_2O_3$ and Ni phase, and no observed microcracks at their $Al_2O_3$ and Ni interface. In the $Al_2O_3$/Ni composite, the main fracture mode showed a mixed fracture with intergranular and transgranuluar type having some ,surface roughness. The fracture toughness was slightly increased due to the plastic deformation mechanism of Ni phase in the $Al_2O_3$/Ni composite.

  • Aluminum-based $Al/Al_2O_3$ composites were fabricated by a powder-in sheath rolling method. A stainless steel tube with outer diameter of 12 mm and wall thickness of 1 mm was used as a sheath. A mixture of aluminum powder and $Al_2O_3$ particles of which volume content was varied from 5 to 20%, was filled in the tube by tap filling and then rolled by 75% reduction in thickness at ambient temperature. The rolled specimen was then sintered at 56$0^{\circ}C$ for 0.5 h. The mixture of Al powders and $Al_2O_3$ particles was successfully consolidated by the sheath rolling. The $Al/Al_2O_3$ composite fabricated by the sheath rolling showed a recrystallized structure, while unreinforced Al powder compact fabricated by the same procedure showed a deformed structure. The unreinforced Al powder compact was characterized by a deformation (rolling) texture of which main component is {112}<111>, while the $Al/Al_2O_3$ composite showed a mixed texture oi deformation and recrystallization. The sintering resulted in recrystallization in Al powder compact and grain growth in the composite.

  • In this study, the fabrication of $Al_2O_3$/5vol.%Cu nanocomposite and its mechanical property were discussed. The nanocomposite powders were produced by high energy ball milling of $Al_2O_3$ and Cu elemental powders. The ball-milled powders were sintered with Pulse Electric Current Sintering (PECS) facility. The relative densities of specimens sintered at $1200^{\circ}C$ and $1250^{\circ}C$ after soaking process at $900^{\circ}C$ were 96% and over 97%, respectively. The sintered microstructures were composed of $Al_2O_3$ matrix and the nano-sized Cu particles distributed on grain boundaries of $Al_2O_3$ matrix. The nanocomposite exhibited the enhanced fracture toughness compared with general monolithic $Al_2O_3$. The toughness increase was explained by the crack deflection and bridging by dispersed Cu particles.

Control of De-Lamination Phenomena in LTCC Zero-Shrinkage by Glass Infiltration Method

  • A zero-shrinkage sintering process in which the shrinkage of x-y axis is controlled to be zero is in great demand due to the trend of high integration in the ceramic modules. Among the zero-shrinkage sintering processes that are available, the proposed glass infiltration method where the viscous but fluidic glass infiltrates of the $Al_2O_3$ particles in the structure of $Al_2O_3$/glass/$Al_2O_3$ during firing is one of the applicable methods. However, the above proposed glass infiltration method has the problem of the warpage-like delamination. This occurred at the outermost surface of the multiple-bundle substrate. It is thought that the decomposed gas rapidly expands in low viscous glass to create vacant space. To solve this problem, the vacant space was tamped with $Al_2O_3$ particles to lead to the actual improvement of the sintered properties. With 15 wt% of tamping $Al_2O_3$ particles in glass, most of the vacant space disappeared. Fully densified zero-shrinkage substrate without delamination can be obtained.

  • $Al_2O_3$-copper alloy has been successfully made by gas atomization, mechanical alloying and hot pressing. In order to investigate microstructure and phase, it has been studied by using scanning electron microscope, transmission electron microscope and X-ray diffractometor. Mechanical properties have been examined using hardness tester and compressive tester according to annealing temperature. Although comparatively large Cu-Al powders are milled, the reaction between Cu-Al and $Cu_2O$ occurs and very fine $Al_2O_3$ particles in the matrix particles (5-10nm) are obtained. Compressive strength of this alloy is more than that of GlidCop Al60.

Processing of Nano-Sized Metal Alloy Dispersed $Al_2O_3$ Nanocomposites

  • An optimum route to fabricate the ferrous alloy dispersed $Al_2O_3$ nanocomposites such as $Al_2O_3$/Fe-Ni and $Al_2O_3$/Fe-Co with sound microstructure and desired properties was investigated. The composites were fabricated by the sintering of powder mixtures of $Al_2O_3$ and nano-sized ferrous alloy, in which the alloy was prepared by solution-chemistry routes using metal nitrates powders and a subsequent hydorgen reduction process. Microstructural observation of reduced powder mixture revealed that the Fe-Ni or Fe-Co alloy particles of about 20 nm in size homogeneously surrounded $Al_2O_3$, forming nanocomposite powder. The sintered $Al_2O_3$/Fe-Ni composite showed the formation of Fe$Al_2O_4$ phase, while the reaction phases were not observed in $Al_2O_3$/Fe-Co composite. Hot-pressed $Al_2O_3$/Fe-Ni composite showed improved mechanical properties and magnetic response. The properties are discussed in terms of microstructural characteristics such as the distribution and size of alloy particles.
