Polarimetric research on S- and Q-type Near-Earth Asteroids

  • Polarimetry is a powerful technique to investigate the physical properties of surface materials on airless bodies in the solar system. It is known that the degree of linear polarization changes as a function of the phase angle (the angle between Sun-target-Observer). Especially, the dependency of the polarization degree at large phase angle allows us to obtain information related to the particle size and porosity, which is difficult to be determined via other observation techniques (i.e., photometry and spectroscopy). However, despite the advantage, only a few asteroids were observed with polarimetric devices at large phase angles. Here, we present our new polarimetric research of Near-Earth Asteroids (NEAs) observed at the large phase angles. Among the NEAs, we focus on S- and Q-type asteroids, which include: (331471) 1984 QY1, (90075) 2002 VU94, and (66391) 1999 KW4. The observation was conducted using the Pirka 1.6-m Telescope at the Nayoro Observatory of Hokkaido University at the phase angles ${\alpha}{\sim}100degree$, which provides us the maximum polarization degrees of these objects. Considering the observational results together with two objects ((1566) Icarus and (4179) Toutatis) in reference papers [1], [2], we will discuss the implication of the regolith size on their surfaces.

A Study on the Magnetic Properties of Polycrystailine${(Fe,In,Eu)}_2O_3$ (다결정${(Fe,In,Eu)}_2O_3$계의 자기적 성질에 관한 연구)

  • The magnetic properties of the polycrystalline ${(Fe_{2}O_{3})}_{1-x-y}{(In_{2}O_{3})}_{x}{(Eu_{2}O_{3})}_{y}$(x=0.01, y=0.02과 x=0.02, y=0.03) have been studied by the methods of X-ray diffraction, $M\"{o}ssbauer$ effect, and magnetic hysteresis measurement. The X-ray diffraction patterns show that the samples have a same crystal structure as $\alpha-Fe_{2}O_{3}$. From the analysis of the temperature dependence of the quadrupole splitting and average half-width, it is found that the Morin transition occurs in the sample of x=0.01 and y=0.02 and the spin angle defined as the angle between the [111] crystal axis and antiferromagnetic vector, changes from about $35^{\circ}$ to the (111) plane as increasing the temperature in the sample of x=0.02 and y=O.03. The temperature dependence of magnetic hyperfine field is analyzed by using the spin-wave theory. The isomer shift values at room temperature are found to be given by about 0.35mm/s for the samples which means that the Fe ions belong to $3^{+}ion$. The temperature dependence of isomer shift was analyzed by using the Debye model.

Preparation and Evaluation of Solid Composites Containing Choline Alphoscerate

  • The objective of this study was to evaluate the characteristics of the mixtures of choline alphoscerate (alpha-glycerylphosphorylcholine, alpha-GPC), in the liquid form, and sucrose ester, which formed a solid composite. The choline alphoscerate solid composites were prepared using different ratios of sucrose ester, and different preparation methods, such as air drying and rotary evaporation, were compared for their preparation efficacy. We examined the characteristics of the solid composites by using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), angle of repose, and moisture content. The ideal mixing ratio of choline alphoscerate and sucrose ester was determined as 1:3 and air drying was found to be more suitable for the preparation of solid composites than rotary evaporation. SEM measurements of the degree of dispersion and the size of particles indicated that a high-temperature air method was more suitable. These results demonstrated the successful preparation of choline alphoscerate solid composites that have potential for industrial use.

  • The crystal structure of maltitol, 4-O-${\alpha}$ -D-glucopyranosyl-D-glucitol, has been determined by X-ray diffraction method. The crystal is orthorhombic with cell parameters of a = 8.170(1), b = 12.731(1), c = 13.679(3) ${\AA}$, space group $P2_12_12_1$ and z = 4. The structure was solved by direct methods and refined to R = 0.030 for 1181 observed reflections measured on a diffractometer. The ${\alpha}$-glucose ring has chair conformation. The carbon atom chain of the glucitol residue has the bent, ap, Psc, Psc conformation. The angle at the ring oxygen atom is $112.6^{\circ}$ and the one at the glucosidic oxygen is $117.1^{\circ}$. The molecules are linked by very complicated hydrogen bonds, and there is an intramolecular hydrogen bond between O(1') and O(2').

  • A wind turbine is one of the most popular energy conversion systems to generate electricity from the natural renewable energy source and an axial-flow type wind turbine is the most popular system for the electricity generation in the wind farm nowadays. In this study, a cross-flow type turbine has been studied for the application of wind turbine for electricity generation. The target capacity of electric power generation of the model wind turbine developing on the project is 12 volts, 130A/H (about 1.56kW). The important design parameters of the model turbine impeller are the inlet and exit angle of the turbine blade, number of blade, hub/tip ratio and the exit flow angle of the casing. In this study, the radial equilibrium theorem was used to decide the inlet and exit angle of the impller blade and CFD technique was used to have the performance analysis of the designed model power turbine to find out the optimum geometry of the CPT impeller and casing. The designed CPT with 24 impeller blades at ${\alpha}=82^{\circ}$, ${\beta}=40^{\circ}$ of turbine blade angle was estimated to generate 284.6 N.m of indicated torque and 2.14kW of indicated power.

  • It was noted by the several researchers that the voltage outputs in response to a single yawed hot-wire sensor in a flow perpendicular to the axis deviate from the theoretical voltage output by King's law and Jorgensen's relation. This study noticed that the calibration coefficients of original Grande's method are not constant and fairly sensitive to the radial angle (${\alpha}_{R}$). For more accuracy, this study interpolated the parameters of the Grande relation as a function of radial angle and compared velocity components with ones by Jorgensen and original Grande relation in the calibration jet flow. Finally, as a test case, 3-dimensional turbulent flows of the inlet plane of 180 degree bend are measured and compared the velocity components by above three methods and showed the characteristics of the flows.

Pile Contact Depth Effects in Rubbed Polyimide(PI) Films

  • To determine the molecular directionality of PI chains depending on rubbing condition, we measured the angle resolved near edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectra at C K-edge of the rubbed PI films. Twisted nematic mode PI (PI-TN) and in plane switching mode PI (PI-IPS) were introduced to examine the effect of rubbing conditions on the chain directionality. The average tilt angle a of the PI molecules was estimated through the measured intensity change of $C=C\;{\pi}^*$ in NEXAFS C K-edge spectrum by controlling the stage speed and the pile contact depth. After rubbing, the irregular molecular direction changed to a regular direction with a molecular tilt angle of $51.2^{\circ}$ for PI-TN and $49.6^{\circ}$ for PI-IPS at the rubbing condition of the roll speed of 1000 rpm, stage speed of 50 mm/sec, and file contact depth of 0.3 mm. The molecular tilt angle $\alpha$ was linearly decreased in the PI-TN and PI-IPS samples with increasing depth of the pile contact.

The Optical Tolerances' Decision of the Ophthalmic Dispensing for Korean Models (한국형 안경조제의 광학적 허용오차 설정)

  • The system for optical tolerances of completion spectacles was made to sum of the accumulated error - the circumstances on composing prescription, the visual-distance, the tilting angle, the losing of a temple, the vertex distance, the axis of toric lens and the sloping of lens etc. It was given by the relation of allowed values size(T) and power(D), $T=T_0e^{-aD}$. Here, $T_0$ is the size of allowed values of plane-lens with power is 0 and ${\alpha}$ is the factor of allowed values. In case of being adopted to new form s tolerance corresponding to RAL 915, for the tolerance is large direction, the factor of allowed values ${\alpha}$ is $0.166(T_0=5.90)$ and for the tolerance is small direction, the factor of allowed values ${\alpha}$ is $0.166(T_0=2.95)$.

Effects of Calcaneus Fixation Taping on Quadriceps Angle and Lower Limb Muscles During Stairway Gait of a Patient with Patellofemoral Pain (무릎넙다리통증증후군 환자의 계단보행 시 발뒤꿈치뼈 교정 테이핑이 슬개대퇴각과 하지근육에 미치는 영향)

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to determine the structural change in knees caused by quadriceps angle and the muscle activity in lower limbs. Indirect intervention was provided by using taping for stability in the ankle joints, which affected patellofemoral pain. Methods: The subjects in this study were 20 patients with patellofemoral pain who visited ${\bigcirc}{\bigcirc}{\bigcirc} $ Hospital in Busan. The visual analogue scale measured the dynamic quadriceps angle and the degree of pain felt by the patients while walking down stairs, which was a known factor of patellofemoral pain. In addition, muscle activities in the rectus femoris, vastus lateralis, vastus medialis, tibialis anterior, peroneus longus, and biceps femoris, which affect the knees and ankles, were measured using surface electromyography. The muscle activities were converted into %RVC for this study. The data obtained in this study were analyzed with the Wilcoxon signed-rank test using the SPSS Ver. 25.0 statistical program. The significance level ${\alpha}$ was 0.05. Results: The study results showed that the pain and dynamic quadriceps angle were significantly reduced statistically when applying the calcaneus fixation taping (p<0.05). Muscle activity in the lower limbs was significantly decreased in the vastus medialis, vastus lateralis, and tibialis anterior (p<0.05). Conclusion: The summary of the study results verified that the calcaneus fixation taping reduced the pain and dynamic quadriceps angle by providing stability in the ankle joints. It also produced efficient movement due to the difference in lower-limb muscle activity.

Statistical and Probabilistic Assessment for the Misorientation Angle of a Grain Boundary for the Precipitation of in a Austenitic Stainless Steel (II) (질화물 우선석출이 발생하는 결정립계 어긋남 각도의 통계 및 확률적 평가 (II))

  • The distribution and prediction interval for the misorientation angle of grain boundary at which $Cr_2N$ was precipitated during heating at $900^{\circ}C$ for $10^4$ sec were newly estimated, and followed by the estimation of mathematical and median rank methods. The probability density function of the misorientation angle can be estimated by a statistical analysis. And then the ($1-{\alpha}$)100% prediction interval of misorientation angle obtained by the estimated probability density function. If the estimated probability density function was symmetric then a prediction interval for the misorientation angle could be derived by the estimated probability density function. In the case of non-symmetric probability density function, the prediction interval could be obtained from the cumulative distribution function of the estimated probability density function. In this paper, 95, 99 and 99.73% prediction interval obtained by probability density function method and cumulative distribution function method and compared with the former results by median rank regression or mathematical method.
