  • We present in this paper a finite element formulation for nonlinear torsional analysis of 3D beams with arbitrary composite cross-sections. Since the proposed formulation employs a continuum mechanics based beam element with kinematics enriched by the extended St. Venant solutions, it can precisely account higher order warping effect and its 3D couplings. We propose a numerical procedure to calculate the extended St. Venant equation and the twisting center of an arbitrary composite cross-section simultaneously. The accuracy and efficiency of the proposed formulation are thoroughly investigated through representative numerical examples.

  • Sprain is the injury of meridian-muscle, and is caused by qi and blood obstruction or regional stagnation of qi and blood. So we take the channel points where pain flows. If we take the locations that feel pain, those locations are treatments points and ashi points. So we searched over the ashi points appearing on the patients with wrist sprain. Ashi points appeared on LI5, TE4, SI5 around wrist joints, LI10, LI11, LU6 around elbow joints, LI14, LU3, LU4, PC2 around upper arm. Also, ashi points appeared much on ST17, KI23, PC1, SP18, ST18 around thoracic region, and, on BL15, BL44, BL13 around anterior and thoracodorsal region, in order stated. Ashi points of the highest frequency appeared on LI14 around upper arm, and on LI5, TE4 around wrist joint, and SI5, ST17, KI12, PC1, SP18 appeared with second highest frequency. And ashi points on elbow points and thoracodorsal region appeared with the same frequency. Therefore, it is possible for us to know that the pain location appears in order of upper arm, anterior thoracic region, elbow joint region, and, thoracodorsal region, in treating wrist joints. There was a tendency that pain and movement disturbance recovered more quickly, depending on the pain reduction, as we found out the ashi points closely from stagnated qi and blood caused by wrist arthritis, and relaxed the stiff location. Rubbing treatments in treating pain ashi points is considered to play an important role to reduce pain effectively, so it is necessary to make a further study.

  • Ground beetle fauna of Wangpi-cheon watershed in Yeongyang-gun to Uljin-gun, Gyeongsangbuk-do was investigated from May to October in 2012. Ground beetles were collected by pitfall trapping. A total of 38 species of 20 genera belonging to 8 subfamilies were identified from 2,486 collected ground beetles. Species richness was high in Pterostichinae (16 species), Carabinae (8 species), Harpalinae (5 species), Callistinae (3 species), Nebriinae (3 species) and others (1 species). Dominant species were Synuchus cycloderus (1,025 individuals) and Aulonocarabus seishinensis seishinensis (332 individuals), Pristosia vigil (133 individuals), and Coptolabrus smaragdinus branickii (117 individuals) in order. Monthly changes in abundance of upper dominante genera Pterostichus, Aulonocarabus, Coptolabrus species and Synuchus, Pristosia, Colpodes species showed that the former had the highest number in August whereas the latter increased in June and September. The genus Pterostichus species were preferred in deciduous forest in Wangpi-cheon watershed, while the genus Synuchus species were collected in mixes forest adjacent to farmland and recreation facilities and the genera Chlaenius, Harpalus species were collected in mixes forest adjacent to farmland nearby stream. Non-metric multidimensional scaling (NMDS), ground beetles and sites could be divided into two distinct groups: St. 1, St. 2, St. 3 group and St. 4 group. Some species such as Pterostichus orientalis orientalis, P. vicinus and P. bellatrix were particularly abundant at St. 4.

  • The purpose of this study was aimed to isolate a Salmonella Typhimurium-specific phage (KFS-ST) from washing water in a poultry processing facility and to investigate the feasibility of the KFS-ST as a novel bio-receptor for the magnetoelastic (ME) biosensor method. KFS-ST against S. Typhimurium was isolated, propagated, and purified using a CsCl-gradient ultracentrifugation. Morphological characteristics of KFS-ST were analyzed using transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Its specificity and efficiency of plating analysis were conducted against 39 foodborne pathogens. The temperature and pH stabilities of KFS-ST were investigated by the exposure of the phage to various temperatures (-70℃-70℃) and pHs (1-12) for 1 h. A one-step growth curve analysis was performed to determine the eclipse time, latent time and burst size of phage. The storage stability of KFS-ST was studied by exposing KFS-ST to various storage temperatures (-70℃, -20℃, 4℃, and 22℃) for 12 weeks. KFS-ST was isolated and purified with a high concentration of (11.47 ± 0.25) Log PFU/mL. It had an icosahedral head (56.91 ± 2.90 nm) and a non-contractile tail (225.49 ± 2.67 nm), which was classified into the family of Siphoviridae in the order of Caudovirales. KFS-ST exhibited an excellent specificity against only S. Typhimurium and S. Enteritidis, which are considered two of the most problematic Salmonella strains in the meat and poultry. However, KFS-ST did not exhibit any specificity against six other Salmonella and 27 non-Salmonella strains. KFS-ST was stable at temperature of 4℃ to 50℃ and at pH of 4 to 12. The eclipse time, latent time, and burst size of KFS-ST were determined to be 10 min, 25 min and 26 PFU/ infected cell, respectively. KFS-ST was relatively stable during the 12-week storage period at all tested temperatures. Therefore, this study demonstrated the feasibility of KFS-ST as a novel bio-receptor for the detection of S. Typhimurium and S. Enteritidis in meat and poultry products using the ME biosensor method.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the antioxidant and anti-obesity activity of ethanol extracts from fermented Arctium lappa L. Arctium lappa fermented twice with Phellinus linteus ($2^{nd}$ FA) showed more DPPH radical scavenging activity than non-fermented Arctium lappa (NFA), and Arctium lappa fermented once ($1^{st}$ FA) at a concentration of 62.5 ppm. The $2^{nd}$ FA showed the highest level of ABTS radical scavenging activity at concentration range of 31.5~125 ppm. The ABTS free radical scavenging activities of $1^{st}$ FA and $2^{nd}$ FA were similar to that of BHA, a synthetic antioxidant, at a concentration of 250 ppm. The total polyphenol content of $2^{nd}$ FA was higher than those of NFA and $1^{st}$ FA. The flavonoid content was significantly increased in $1^{st}$ FA and $2^{nd}$ FA than NFA. During adipocyte differentiation, lipid accumulation in 3T3-L1 cells was significantly decreased in the order of NFA, $1^{st}$ FA, and $2^{nd}$ FA at all concentrations. In conclusion, the antioxidant and anti-obesity activities of A. lappa were increased depending on the degree of fermentation. It is suggested that fermented Arctium lappa, especially $2^{nd}$ FA, could be used as a natural ingredient for functional foods and medicine.

  • In the current study, identifying regimes and behaviors of the various viscous fluids in a typical horizontal single-stage centrifugal pump and improving its performance by enhancing volute throat area have been surveyed numerically and experimentally. Indeed the initial pump had insufficient head at BEP (Best Efficient Point) in relevant applications. In order to solve this problem, the method of increasing the volute throat area on the prototype was used in steps and eventually the increased head values have been achieved. Then modified centrifugal pump, that has been constructed based on the modified control volume from numerical results, has been tested thoroughly. The maximum head and efficiency discrepancy between numerical and experimental results in BEP were 1.4 and 2.6% respectively. The effects of viscous fluids, from 1 cSt to 500 cSt, on the performance curves of centrifugal pump have been investigated as well and results showed that viscous fluids has significant effect on them. Indeed the highest head and efficiency in the same conditions at BEP has been obtained in viscosity 1 cst which was by 19.2% and 44% greater than the viscosity 500 cSt. It is also found that the highest viscous fluid had the highest energy consumption as the absorbed power of highest viscous fluid, 500 cSt, increased up to approximately 55% above the lowest viscous fluid, 1 cSt, values.

  • In order to investigate the characteristics of benthic macroinvertebrate communities in the Gihwa stream, a tributary of the Dong River, we surveyed the community and environmental factors in April and November 2013 at 6 sites. The benthic macroinvertebrate taxa represented total 63 species belonging to 29 families, 12 orders, 5 classes and 4 phyla. Total 48 (10~28 in each site) species were collected in April and 44 (13~24 in each site) in November. The number of individuals increased slightly from $560{\sim}2,290m^{-2}$ in April to $806{\sim}3,674m^{-2}$ in November. Chironomidae spp. was dominant species in April and Stenopsyche bergeri was dominant species in November. In the Functional Feeding Groups, Gathering-collector(53.9%) was dominant in April, while Filtering-collector (44.3%) increased in November. Intolerant order category (i.e. EPT species richness) in St.1, St.5 and St.6 increased in November compared to April due to the increase of Trichoptera. St.2, St.3 and St.4, which were located near the fish farm, were low EPT as a whole, but Benthic macroinvertebrate index (BMI) was good state in November than April due to decrease of Chironomidae spp.. The environmental factors in the survey site showed similar tendency except for St.1 between both seasons, and electrical conductivity, salinity, and water width showed seasonal differences. Cluster analysis and Nonmetric multidimensional scaling (NMDS) based on benthic macroinvertebrate community data were divided into two groups according to season. Electrical conductivity, salinity and substrate composition were the most influential factors determining the distribution patterns of macroinvertebrate communities.
