The washing effects on pretilt angle generation in a nematic liquid crystal (NLC), 4-n-pentyl-4’-cyanobiphenyl (5CB) on a rubbed polyimide (PI) surface with trifluoromethyl moiety have been successfully studied. The pretilt angle of 5CB is increased by the washing process on the rubbed PI surface. The surface tension on the rubbed PI surface increases with the rubbing strength RS and then saturated above RS=150 mm. The pretilt angle of 5CB for all washing processes on the rubbed PI surface decreases with the surface tension. We have found that the pretilt angle of 5CB on the rubbed PI surface may be attributed van der walls (VDW) dispersion interaction between the LC molecules and the polymer surfaces having trifluoromethyl moieties.
In this study, we have investigated the relationship between the generation of pretilt angle and the polarization component in cells with UV light irradiation on polyimide (PI) surface. It was found that the generated pretilt angle is about $1.4^{\circ}$ with S-polarized UV light irradiation of $75^{\circ}$ on PI surface; it may be attributed to the asymmetry triangular of polymer surface with oblique S-polarized UV light irradiation on PI surface. Also, we measured that the generated pretilt angle is about $2.0^{\circ}$ with oblique P polarized UV light irradiation of $75^{\circ}$ on PI surface. Consequently, we suggest that the generated pretilt angle of the NLC is attributed to the interaction between the LC molecules and the polymer surface with oblique polarized UV light irradiation on PI surface.

Trypanosoma cruzi, the etiological agent of Chagas disease, is an intracellular protozoan parasite, which is now present in most industrialized countries. About 40% of T. cruzi infected individuals will develop severe, incurable cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, or neurological disorders. The molecular mechanisms by which T. cruzi induces cardiopathogenesis remain to be determined. Previous studies showed that increased IL-6 expression in T. cruzi patients was associated with disease severity. IL-6 signaling was suggested to induce pro-inflammatory and pro-fibrotic responses, however, the role of this pathway during early infection remains to be elucidated. We reported that T. cruzi can dysregulate the expression of host PIWI-interacting RNAs (piRNAs) during early infection. Here, we aim to evaluate the dysregulation of IL-6 signaling and the piRNAs computationally predicted to target IL-6 molecules during early T. cruzi infection of primary human cardiac fibroblasts (PHCF). Using in silico analysis, we predict that piR_004506, piR_001356, and piR_017716 target IL6 and SOCS3 genes, respectively. We validated the piRNAs and target gene expression in T. cruzi challenged PHCF. Secreted IL-6, soluble gp-130, and sIL-6R in condition media were measured using a cytokine array and western blot analysis was used to measure pathway activation. We created a network of piRNAs, target genes, and genes within one degree of biological interaction. Our analysis revealed an inverse relationship between piRNA expression and the target transcripts during early infection, denoting the IL-6 pathway targeting piRNAs can be developed as potential therapeutics to mitigate T. cruzi cardiomyopathies.
Direct exposure of renal tubular brush-border membranes (BBM) to free cadmium (Cd) causes a reduction in phosphate (Pi) transport capacity. Biochemical mechanism of this reduction was investigated in the present study. Renal proximal tubular brush-border membrane vesicles (BBMV) were isolated from rabbit kidney outer cortex by Mg precipitation method. Vesicles were exposed to $50{\sim}200\;{\mu}M\;CdCl_2$ for 30 min, then the phosphate transporter activity was determined. The range of Cd concentration employed in this study was comparable to that of the unbound Cd documented in renal cortical tissues of Cd-exposed animals at the time of onset of renal dysfunction. The rate of sodium-dependent phosphate transport $(Na^+-Pi\;cotransport)$ by BBMV was determined by $^{32}P-Iabeled$ inorganic phosphate uptake, and the number of $Na^+-Pi$ cotransporters in the BBM was assessed by Pi-protectable $^{14}C-labeled$ phosphonoformic acid $([^{14}C]PFA)$ binding. The exposure of BBMV to Cd decreased the $Na^+-Pi$ cotransport activity in proportion to the Cd concentration in the preincubation medium, but it showed no apparent effect on the Pi-protectable PFA binding. These results indicate that an interaction of renal BBM with free Cd induces a reduction in $Na^+-Pi$ cotransport activity without altering the carrier density in the membrane. This, in turn, suggest that the suppression of phosphate transport capacity $(V_{max})$ observed in Cd-treated renal BBM is due to a reduction in $Na^+-Pi$ translocation by existing carriers, possibly by Cd-induced fall in membrane fluidity.

Remarkably high and stable separation performance for olefin/paraffin mixtures was previously reported by facilitated olefin transport through ${\pi}$-complex membranes consisting of silver ions dissolved in poly(hexamethylenevinylene) (PHMV). In this study, the ${\pi}$-complex formation of $AgBF_4,\;AgClO_4\;and\;AgCF_{3}SO_3$ with PHMV and their ionic interactions were investigated. FT-Raman spectroscopy showed that the C=C stretching bands of PHMV shifted to a lower frequency upon incorporation of silver salt, but the degree of peak shift depended on the counter-anions of salt due to different complexation strengths. The symmetric stretching modes of anions indicated the presence of only free ions up to [C=C]:[Ag]=1:1, demonstrating the unusually high solubility of silver salt in PHMV. Above the solubility limit, the ion pairs and higher-order ionic aggregates started to form. The coordination number of silver ion for C=C of PHMV was in the order $AgBF_4$ > $AgClO_4$ > $AgCF_{3}SO_3$, but became similar at [C=C]:[Ag]=1:1. The different coordination number was interpreted in terms of the different transient crosslinks of silver cations in the complex, which may be related to both the interaction strength of the polymer/silver ion and the bulkiness of the counteranion.
We have investigated an Au intercalated monolayer graphene on Ni(111) using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), high resolution photoemission spectroscopy (HRPES), and low energy electron diffraction (LEED) at the 3A2 ARUPS beamline in Pohang Accelerator Laboratory. We find the monolayer graphene is well grown on the Ni(111) surface by the adsorption of acetylene. However, the graphene does not show the characteristic $\pi$ band near the Fermi level due to its strong interaction with the underlying substrate. When Au is adsorbed on the surface and then annealed at high temperature, we observe that Au is intercalated underneath the monolayer graphene. The process of the Au intercalation was monitored by HRPES of corresponding Au 4f and C 1s core levels as well as the electronic structure of the $\sigma$, $\pi$ states at $\Gamma$, K points. The $\sigma$, $\pi$ bands of graphene shift towards the Fermi level and the $\pi$ band is clearly observed at K point after the intercalation of full monolayer Au. The full width at half maximum (FWHM) of the C 1s peak narrows to approximately 0.42 eV after intercalation. These results imply that the interaction between the graphene and substrate is considerably weakened after the Au intercalation. We will discuss the graphene is really closer to ideal free standing graphene suggested recently.

Control over surface induced self-assembly of electronically active pi-conjugated molecules provides great opportunities to fine-tune and optimize their electrical properties in organic electronics. In this study, with the aim of enhancing the electrical performances by promoting surface induced two-dimensional self-assembly in representative pi-conjugated molecules such as poly (3-hexylthiophene) and pentacene, we have controlled the intermolecular interaction at the interface between pi-conjugated molecules and substrate by using self-assembled monolayers functionalized with various groups. We will discuss the dependency of pi-conjugated molecules on the specific properties of the substrate surface and the effect of surface induced self-assembly on electrical performances in organic transistors.
We have investigated that the monodomain alignment of nematic liquid crystal (NLC) is obtained with polarized ultraviolet(PUV) light irradiation on polyimide (PI) surface. The LC alignment capability increases with increasing the UV light irradiation time. The polarized UV light irradiation on oblique angle of 60。 irradiated on PI surface rotated by 90。 at 10 min. after being normally irradiated on PI surface at 30 min., the generated pretilt angle of NLC is about 2.5。. The pretilt angle of NLC is attributed to the interaction between the LC molecules and the asymmetric triangular structure of polymer surface due to photo-depolymerization of polymer with the oblique UV light on PI surface. The voltage -transmittance and response time characteristics of photo-aligned twisted nematic (TN)-LCD with UV light irradiation time 60 min. were almost same in comparison with the rubbing-treated TN-LCD.
