  • In this study, we prepared CdTe/CdS solar cells using a thermal vacuum evaporation method. In particular, $CdCl_2$ treatment was attempted using this same method at $400^{\circ}C$ for 30 min. The prepared CdTe/CdS solar cells were investigated using Fouier transform infrared spectrometry (FTIR), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), and a solar simulator system including light absorption properties, morphological properties, and power conversion efficiency (PCE). In addition, we investigated the gamma-irradiation treatment at dose rates of 0 Gy, 500 Gy, 1 kGy, 10 kGy, and 30 kGy. The characteristics of gamma-irradiation treatment were studied based on the same method described above. In particular, it showed increased values as 0.826% higher than the non-irradiation of 0.448% from PCE analysis.

  • PVP-protected Ag, Pd and $Pt_{50}-Ru_{50}$ colloids were prepared independently by using ${\gamma}$-irradiation and electron beam (EB) at ambient temperature. UV-visible spectra of these colloids show the characteristic bands of surface resonance and give evidence for the formation of nanoparticles. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) experiments were used to know the morphology of nanoparticles prepared by ${\gamma}$-irradiation and EB. The size of Ag, Pd, and $Pt_{50}-Ru_{50}$ nanoparticles prepared by ${\gamma}$-irradiation was ca. 13, 2-3, 15 nm, respectively. While, the size of Ag, Pd, and $Pt_{50}-Ru_{50}$ nanoparticles prepared by EB was ca. 10, 6, and 1-3 nm, respectively. Cyclic voltamograms (CV) were recorded for the Au electrodes immobilized with these nanoparticles. CVs indicated the modifications in the surface as a result of immobilization.

  • Effects of gamma irradiation onf the activity and the properties(amino acid compositions, in vitro digestibility and SDS-PAGE pattern) of proteolytic enzymes were investigated. The proteolytic activity of soluble human serine protease, enzyme in kiwi and pineapple decreased 10% and 30~65% by 5 kGy and 30 kGy, respectively. In dried pancreatin and lysozyme, the proteolytic and antimicrobial activities decreased 6~14% and 10~20% by 5kGy and 40kGy, respectively. The analysis of above 10kGy-irradiated soluble human serine protease by SDS-PAGE revealed radiolysis of the enzyme into protein or peptides of lower molecular weights. The irradiation of skim milk, hammastein casein, and lysozyme up to 40kGy had no deleterious effect on either the in vitro digestibility or amino acid compositions.

  • In the present study, we investigated the effect of tyndallized HY7712 (tHY7712) on the expression of Th cell specific transcription factors and cytokines in whole-body ${\gamma}$-irradiated mice. Oral administration of tHY7712 strongly recovered the ${\gamma}$-irradiation-suppressed expression of helper T (Th) cell- and regulatory T cell-related transcription factors and cytokines, such as T-bet, Foxp3, IFN-${\gamma}$, TNF-${\alpha}$, and IL-10, and suppressed Th2 cell-associated transcription factor and cytokine GATA3 and IL-5, respectively. Furthermore, compared with the control, tHY7712 treatment also restored ${\gamma}$-irradiation-impaired natural killer and cytotoxic T cell activities against YAC-1 tumor cells to 97.8% and 98.6%, respectively.

  • Inflammation is a frequent radiation-induced reaction following therapeutic irradiation. Treatment of human umbilical endothelial cells (HUVEC) with $\gamma$-irradiation ($\gamma$IR) induces the expression of adhesion proteins such as intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1 ), vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1), and E-selectin. Since the upregulation of these proteins on endothelial cell surface has been known to be associated with inflammation, interioring with the expression of adhesion molecules is an important therapeutic target. In the present study, we demonstrate that high mannronic acid-containing alginate (HMA) inhibits $\gamma$IR induced expression of ICAM-1, VCAM-1, and E-selectin on HUVEC in a dose dependent manner. HMA also inhibited $\gamma$IR induced production of Nitric oxide (NO). These data suggest that HMA has therapeutic potential for the treatment of various inflammatory disorder associated with an increase of endothelial leukocyte adhesion molecules.

  • The antioxidant activity was analyzed in gamma-irradiated cooking juices. Because the activities of antioxidants have been attributed to various mechanisms, different assay methods including 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity and ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP), have been conducted and compared. All of these antioxidant assay showed that the antioxidant activity of cooking juice was increased by gamma-irradiation. To investigate this increase of antioxidative activity, the protein was extracted from cooking juices and its antioxidant activity was measured. From the results, it was thought that the modification of protein in cooking juiced by irradiation caused the increase of antioxidant activity of cooking juice. Therefore, gamma irradiation could be an promising method for a sterilization of cooking juice with increased antioxidant activity.

  • Irradiation offers an effective and simple means to extend shelf-life of meat and improve processing properties of meat products. Many researches have been conducted to evaluate the effects of irradiation on meats and meat products. There were some interesting reports such as increase of redness and tenderness of meat and decrease of carcinogenic N-nitrosamines and residual nitrite in cured meat products by irradiation. And, the safety of irradiated products have been also studied. Lipid oxidation and off-odor induced by irradiation can be minimized by appropriate controls of irradiation and storage condition such as addition of antioxidants or oxygen exclusion packaging. The objective of this paper is to introduce the effect of gamma irradiation on quality of meats and meat products reported from the previous researches.

  • A method to control the cigarette beetle. Losioderma serricorne F, m cigarettes by using gamma ray irradiation was evaluated When all stages of cigarette beetle were placed in gelatin capsules and irradiated wlth gamma ray. no eggs survived, but mortalities of pupae, larvae and adults exposed to above 0.8 kGy of gamma ray were only from 0 to 30%. Similar results were also obtained in the control efficacy of the beetle when seuqal kinds ot currently produced ngarettes containing m gelatin capsules were inadhated with gamma ray The cigarette beetle adults and larvae surviving gamma ray inadiatlon were reared on artificial d~etsto show that there were no reproduc. tions was observed in the second generation. The survival periods for each growth stage became shoter with increase gamma ray dosage. The fouirh instar larvae had the longest sulvlvai periods No sign~ficant changes of cigarette flavor and taste were noticed alter gamma ray inadiation. The cigarette packet, metal fotl for packet and cigarette paper by the inad~atlon were not discolored by irradiation.

  • The effect of low dose ${\gamma}$-radiation on the callus growth of Lithospermum erythrorhizon S. cultured on different medium and lighting condition was investigated. The 8 Gy irradiation stimulated callus growth on LS medium supplemented with BA 2 mg/L and NAA 2 mg/L, however, the growth of callus was more effective on LS medium supplemented with BA 1 mg/L and NAA 1 mg/L under 16 hrs day light. And on the LS medium containing IAA 0.2 mg/L, 16 Gy irradiation increased the callus growth by supplement with kinetin 2 mg/1 and the effect of kinetin was higher than BA at same concentration. The growth of callus was more vigorous on LS medium than MS medium in general. On M-9 medium, the growth of callus was poor regardless lighting conditions, however, by ${\gamma}$-ray irradiation of 16 Gy or 30 Gy, callus growth rates were increased by 30% or more than 30%, especially, under 16 hrs day light condition.
