Growth of Elongated Grains in $\alpha$'-Sialon Ceramics ($\alpha$'-Sialon 세라믹스에서의 주상형 입자성장)

  • The effects of the ${\beta}-Si_3N_4$ starting particle size and $\alpha$/$\beta$ phase transformation during sintering process on the microstructure evolution of Yttrium $\alpha$-Sialon ceramics were investigated. As-received ${\beta}-Si_3N_4$ powder (mean particle size: 0.54$\mu$m) and classified ${\beta}-Si_3N_4$ powder(mean particle size: $0.26\mu{m}$) were used as starting powders. With decreasing the starting particle size, the growth of elongated grains was enhanced, which resulted in the whisker -like microstructure with elongated grains. These results were discussed in relation to the two-dimensional nucleation and growth theory. In the specimen heat treated at $1600^{\circ}C$ for 10h before sintering at $1950^{\circ}C$for 1h under 40atm(2-step sintering), the grain size was smaller than of the 1-step sintering at 195$0^{\circ}C$ for 1h. However, bimodal microstructure evolution were not not remarkable in both sample, which is ascribed to the $\alpha$-phase contents existing in ${\beta}-Si_3N_4$ starting powder.

  • 초미립 SiC분말과 SiC platelet을 2차성으로 Si3N4에 첨가하여 SiC/Si3N4 하이브리드 복합체를 가압소결로 제조한 후 2차상의 영향을 조사한 결과핫프레스법을 이용한 경우 SiC platelet은 Si3N4 기지 복합채의 치밀화를 저해하지 않고 초미립의 SiC 첨가는 Si3N4의 입성장을 효과적으로 억제하여 미세한 $\beta$-Si3N4의 grain을 형성함을 관찰하였다. 초미립 SiC첨가를 통한 복합체의 강도 증진은 상대적으로 $\beta$-Si3N4입자의 미세화에 의한 인성의 저하를 유도하나 SiC platelet을 첨가하여 급격한 강도 저하 없이 높은 인성을 갖는 하이브리드 복합체를 제조할 수 있었으며 SiC/Si3N4 하이브리드 복합체의 인성증진은 elongated $\beta$-Si3N4와 platelet SiC의 debonding에 의한 grain pull-out 영향임을 알 수 있었다.

Effect of Starting Crystallographic Phase on the Mechanical Properties of Hot-Pressed SiC Ceramics (초기분말의 결정상이 $Al_2O_3$를 소결 조제로한 고온가압 SiC 세라믹스의 기계적 특성에 미치는 영향)

  • Densification behavior, microstructural evolution, and mechanical properties of hot-pressed specimens using $\beta$-SiC and $\alpha$-SiC powder with Al2O3 additive were studied. Beta-SiC powder was fully densified as 205$0^{\circ}C$, but $\alpha$-SiC powder was at 210$0^{\circ}C$. The maximum flexural strength and the fracture toughness of the specimen hot-pressed using $\beta$-SiC powder were 681 MPa and 6.7 MPa{{{{ SQRT {m } }}, and thosevalues of specimen hot-pressed using $\alpha$-SiC powder were 452 MPa and 4.7 MPa{{{{ SQRT {m } }}, respectively. The strength superiority of specimen hot-pressed using $\beta$-SiC powder was due to the finer grain size, and higher density. The higher toughness of specimen hot-pressed using $\beta$-SiC powder than $\alpha$-SiC powder than $\alpha$-SiC powder was due to the crack deflection mechanism arised from the difference of thermal expansion coefficient between $\alpha$ and $\beta$-SiC phases which were co-existed in the sintered body.

  • In order to obtain the high purity $\beta$-SiC powder that possesses the excellent sinterability and is close to the spherical shape, the carbon black was mixed into the composition of Si(OC2H5)4-H2O-NH3-C2H5OH which the monodispersed spherical fine particles is formed the hydrolysis of Ethylsilicate and the mixture was carbonized under an argon atmosphere. Particle shpae, size and the yield of $\beta$-SiC powder were investigated according to the molar ratio of carbon/alkoxide and variations of reaction temperature and reaction time. The results of this study are as follow ; 1) The yield of $\beta$-SiC gained from the reaction for one hour at 150$0^{\circ}C$ almost got near 100% and the particle size of $\beta$-SiC from the reaction for 15 hrs at 150$0^{\circ}C$ was 0.2${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ on the average and close to the spherical shape agglomerate state. 2) When the molar ratio carbon/alkoxide is over 3.1 and the reaction occurs at 145$0^{\circ}C$ for 5hrs, the carbon content has not an effect on the kind of crystal of product.

  • In this study, $FeSi_2$ as high temperature performance capable thermoelectric materials was manufactured by powder metallurgy.The as-casted Fe-Si alloy was annealed for homogenization below $1200^{\circ}C$ for 3 h. Due to its high brittleness, the cast alloy transformed to fine powders by ball-milling, followed by subsequent compaction (hydraulic pressure; 2 GPa) and sintering ($1200^{\circ}C$, 12 h). In order to precipitate ${\beta}-FeSi_2$, heat treatment was performed at $850^{\circ}C$ with varying dwell time (7, 15 and 55 h). As a result of this experiment thermoelectric phase ${\beta}-FeSi_2$ was quickly transformed by powder metallurgical process. There was not much change in powder factor between 7h and 55h specimens.

플라즈마를 이용한 SiC 합성원리 및 특성분석

  • 산업 및 기술의 발전에 의해 많은 신소재들이 개발되고 있다. 그 중에서 SiC는 고온재료, LED, 반도체 등의 우주선 표면재료, 핵융합로 구조재료, 고온 씰, 히터 등 여러 산업분야에서 관심을 가지면서 다양한 가스를 이용한 합성법이 개발되어 있다. 최근에는 분말의 형태 및 크기를 용도에 맞게 개발해서 사용하고 있는 상황이다. 그런데 각 합성법에 따른 합성원리에 대해서는 여러 가지 주장이 있다. 그 중에서 몇 가지 합성법에 대해서 고찰하고 합성의 원리를 추론한다. 그리고 그 중의 한 가지인 CH3SiCl3 가스를 이용한 SiC 나노분말 합성과 SiC의 결정성장 과정에서 나타나는 whisker의 형성을 확인했다. 정교한 SiC 분말합성은 일반적으로 sol-gel, 플라즈마(DC, AC 및 ICP 등) 등을 이용한 방법이 개발되어 있다. 이와 같이 정교한 SiC 나노분말 등은 실리콘 유기 화합물 중합체(trichloromethylsilane, polycarbosilane 등)의 열분해를 통해 합성 할 수 있으며, 열분해 는 약 1,000{\sim}1,500^{\circ}C의 온도 영역에서 일어난다. 이 과정에서 고분자의 열분해 및 재결합 이 동반되고 부산물로서 HCl, CH4 등의 유해가스를 같이 생성한다. 합성된 SiC 나노분말은 전형적인 ${\beta}-SiC$로 XRD의 관찰결과 (111), (220), (311)의 방향성을 갖는 것을 확인했으며 평균입자의 크기는 약 30 nm 정도다.

  • Fine Si-Al-OH coprecipitate powders were prepared from Si- and Al-alkoxides by the hydrolysis method. $\beta$-Sialon powder was obtained from prepared Si-Al-OH coprecipitate by the simultaneous reduction and nitridation method. The syntehsized Sialon powder was pressureless sintered at 175$0^{\circ}C$ for 90 min in N2 atmosphere. The characterization of the Sialon powder was performed with XRD, BET, SEM, TEM and particle size analysis. The sinterability and mechanical properties of sintered bodies were investigated in terms of relative density, M.O.R., fracture toughness, hardness and the morphology of microstructure. The highest values of their mechanical properties were obtained for the $\beta$-Sialon ceramics at Z=1 and those values are as follows : M.O.R., KIC and HV of $\beta$-Sialon ceramics(Z=1) are 499.1 MPa, 5.9MN/m3/2 and 18.7GPa, respectively.

  • $\beta-SiC$powder with or without the addition of 1-3 wt% of $\beta-SiC$ whiskers (seeds) was hot-pressed at $1850^{\circ}C$ for 1 h using $Al_2O_3$ and $Y_2O_3$ as sintering aids. The hot-pressed materials were subsequently annealed at $1950^{\circ}C$ to enhance grain growth. The introduction of $\beta-SiC$ whiskers into $\beta-SiC$ does not affect the microstructure as well as mechanical properties significantly because the whiskers are not viable in the presence of liquid phase during hot-pressing. The strengths and fracture toughnesses of the hot-pressed and subsequently 5 h-annealed materials with 1 wt% $\beta-SiC$ whiskers and without $\beta-SiC$ whiskers were 465 MPa and 5.8 MPaㆍ$m^{1/2}$, and 451 MPa and 5.5 MPaㆍ$m^{1/2}$, respectively.

  • Ultrafine ${\beta}$-SiC powders were synthesized by the vapor phase reaction of TMS[Si(CH3)4] in hydrogen The reaction temperature and TMS concentration were varied from 1000 to 1400$^{\circ}C$ and from 1 to 10% respectively. The average particle size and phase of the powders were analyzed by TEM and XRD. Ultrafine ${\beta}$-SiC powders were synthesized above 1000$^{\circ}C$ and the crystallinity of the powders increased with increasing reaction temperature. Shape of the particles were spherical and had average size of about 20 nm which showed no difference as the reaction temperature and TMS concentration increased. From the FT-IR analysis the absorption bands of Si-C of the powders shifted to higher wavenumber as the reaction temperature increased,. Under the condition of total gas flow above 1500cc/min ${\beta}$-SiC and poly-Si powders were obtained simultaneously. The Si-O bond intensity was increased under the condition of total gas flow rate above 1000cc/min which might be due to oxidation formed on poly-Si.

Influence of α-SiC Seed Addition on Spark Plasma Sintering of β-SiC with Al-B-C: Microstructural Development (Al-B-C 조제 β-SiC의 스파크 플라즈마 소결에 미치는 α-SiC seed 첨가 영향: 미세 구조 변화)

  • The unique features of spark plasma sintering process are the possibilities of a very fast heating rate and a short holding time to obtain fully dense materials. $\beta$-SiC powder with 0, 2, 6, 10 wt% of $\alpha$-SiC particles (seeds) and 4 wt% of Al-B-C (sintering aids) were spark plasma sintered at $1700-1850^{\circ}C$ for 10 min. The heating rate, applied pressure and sintering atmosphere were kept at $100^{\circ}C/min$, 40 MPa and a flowing Ar gas (500 CC/min). Microstructural development of SiC as function of seed content and temperature during spark plasma sintering was investigated quantitatively and statistically using image analysis. Quantitative image analyses on the sintered SiC ceramics were conducted on the grain size, aspect ratio and grain size distribution of SiC. The microstructure of SiC sintered up to $1700^{\circ}C$ consisted of equiaxed grains. In contrast, the growth of large elongated SiC grains in small matrix grains was shown in sintered bodies at $1750^{\circ}C$ and the plate-like grains interlocking microstructure had been developed by increasing sintering temperature. The introduction of $\alpha$-SiC seeds into $\beta$-SiC accelerated the grain growth of elongated grains during sintering, resulting in the plate-like grains interlocking microstructure. In the $\alpha$-SiC seeds added in $\beta$-SiC, the rate of grain growth decreased with $\alpha$-SiC seed content, however, bulk density and aspect ratio of grains in sintered body increased.
