Monotupenes of the oleoresin of P. densiflora S. et Z., P. densi-thunber gii Uyeki, P. thunbergii Parl., and P. densiflora for. erecta Uyeki of the subgenus Diploxylon of the genus Pinus in Korea were analysed by means of gas liquid chromatography, and following results were obtained. Monoterpene of P. densiflora, P. densi-thunbergii, P. thunbergii, and P. densiflora for. erecta consisted of ${\alpha}$-pinene, camphene, ${\beta}$-pinene, myrcene, limonene, ${\beta}$-phellandrene, terpinolene and two unknown components. Major monoterpene components of P. densiflora and it's for. erecta were ${\alpha}$-pinene, ${\beta}$-phellandrene, myrcene, and terpinolene. Major monoterpene components of P. densi-thunbergii were ${\beta}$-pinene, ${\beta}$-phellandrene, ${\alpha}$-pinene, and terpinolene. Major monoterpene components of P. thunbergii were ${\beta}$-pinene, ${\alpha}$-pinene, ${\beta}$-phellandre, and limonene. Monoterpene components in P. densiflora, P. densi-thunbergii, P. thundergii, and P.densiflora for, erecta showed a range of variation by the individual trees. Monoterpene contents of P. densi-thunbergii were intermediate between those of P. densiflora and P. thunbergii. ${\alpha}$-pinene, ${\beta}$-pinene, and myrcene appeared to be the best taxonomio characteristics for separating P. densiflora from P. thunbergii, and the former had higher content of ${\alpha}$-pinene than ${\beta}$-pinene while those of the latter were vise versa. There was a significant difference of ${\alpha}$-pinene components of P. densiflora between that of Anmyun Island and Mt. Chiak, but it seemed to be caused by the difference of the individual trees rather than provenancial difference.
Volatile components in the leaves and fruits of Z. schinjfolium and Z. piperitum were analyzed by Headspace SPME(Solid phase Microextraction). Fifty two and 48 components in the leaves and fruits, repectively, were identified in Z. schinifolium. (E)-2-hexenal, ${\alpha}-pinene$, (Z)-ocimene+limonene, estragole, germacrene-d were detected at common components in the leaves and estragole in the fruits of Z. schinjfolium. Regardless of collection sites hexanal, (Z)-3-hexenol, (E)-2-hexenal, n-hexanol were appeared in the leaves while undecanone in the fruits. Thirty and 27 components in the leaves and fruits, respectively, were identified in Z. piperitum. ${\alpha}-pinene,\;{\beta}-phellandrene$, 1,8-cineole, citronellal and myrcene, (Z)-ocimene+limonene, ${\beta}-phellandrene$ were appeared as common components in the leaves and fruits collected from Baeck-yang-sa and Nae-jang-sa. (Z)-3-hexenol, (E)-2-hexenal, ${\alpha}-pinene\;myrcene\;and\;{\beta}-phellandrene$, citronellal, geranyl acetate were major components in the leaves and fruits from Tong-do-sa.

Resistant and susceptible pine (Pinus thunbergii, Parl) trees to pine gall midge (Thecodiplosis japonensis, Uchida et Inouye) were selected and monoterpene composition in one year old branches, shoots and needles of both groups have been analysed by GLC. The results are summarized as follows; 1. Monoterpene composition in either one year old branches or shoots were not affected by their directions (North or South). 2. Major monoterpenes in one year old branches were ${\alpha}-pinene,\;{\beta}-pinene$, myrcene, limonene, ${\beta}-phellandrene$ and terpinolene. 3. In addition to ${\alpha}-pinene$, camphene, ${\beta}-pinene$, myrcene, ${\Delta}^3-carene$, limonene, ${\beta}-phellandrene$ and terpinolene, several less volatile components which appear to be monoterpenes were also present in shoots and needles. 4. Compared with the susceptible pine, the resistant tree was found richer in limonene composition. 5. ${\beta}-Pinene$ composition in the resistant pine was less than that in the susceptible pine. 6. The difference in the composition of limonene or ${\beta}-pinene$ between two groups of pine trees was discussed in relation to the resistance to pine gall midge.

In order to investigate the composition ratio and the emission rate of monoterpenes emitted from coniferous trees during summer, the enclosure chamber experiments were carried out for two tree species (Pinus densiflora and Pinus rigida). The major monoterpenes from the pine trees were $\alpha$-pinene, $\beta$-pinene, myrcene and $\beta$-phellandrene. There was no difference of the composition ratio between two sites for P. densiflora, but the difference was observed for P. rigida. Clearly, the ratio of $\beta$-pinene (26.1 %) for P. rigida was higher than that of $\beta$-phellandrene (12%) at the Gumsung mountain site, but the ratio of $\beta$-phellandrene (22.2%) was higher than that of $\beta$-pinene (9.9%) at the Chiri mountain site. Particularly, the composition ratio of $\beta$-phellandrene was higher than that of $\beta$-pinene for P. densiflora, and the opposite trend was found for P. rigida at the Gumsung mountain site. The characteristics of the composition ratio between two species were similar at the Chiri mountain site. As a result of the emission rate measurements, it was observed that both sites did not show any significant $\beta$ value (slope between emission rate and temperature) and ERs (Standard Emission rate at 3$0^{\circ}C$) difference. However, the $\beta$ value and ERs at the Chiri mountain site were slightly greater than those of Gumsung mountain site for both pine species. P. densiflora (1.703 and 1.971 $\mu\textrm{g}$C/gdw/hr) showed the higher monoterpene ERs than those of P. rigida (0.572 and 0.698 $\mu\textrm{g}$C/gdw/hr) at both sites.
(Z)-ocimene+limonene, $(E)-{\beta}-ocimene$ and citronellal showed seasonal variation in the leaves of Z. schinifolium. Especially estragole was detected at fruiting stage regardless of collection sites. Common variation components in the leaves of Z. piperitum at all collection sites were (Z)-3-hexenol, ${\alpha}-pinene$, limonene and citronellal. The compositions with monthly variation in Z. schinifolium at arboretum were ${\alpha}-pinene$, myrcene, (Z)-3-hexenyl acetate, ${\alpha}-phellandrene$, (Z)-ocimene+limonene, ${\beta}-phellandrene$, linalool, geranyl acetate while in Z. piperitum were hexanal, (Z)-3-hexenol, (E)-2-hexenal, hexanol, ${\alpha}-pinene$, (Z)-ocimene, limonene, citronellal, geranyl acetate, ${\beta}-caryophyllene$. Estragole was not detected in Z. schinifolium leaves at arboretum due to too young tree to bearing fruit on it.

This study was carried out to investigate the changes in volatile constituents concerning with the flavor of the green ginger (Zingiber officinale Roscoe) during storage in underground pit ($15^{\circ}C$, RH 95%). And the constituents of essential oil of etiolated shoots formed on the mother rhizomes during the five months storage in the dark under same conditions were compared with those of mother rhizomes. The essential oils of Korean domestic ginger (Bong-dong cultivar) were isolated by simultaneous steam distillation and extraction method (SDE). Then the compositions of the essential oils were analysed by GC and GC-MS spectrometry. The major compounds of essential oil from the fresh rhizomes were zingiberene, $citronellol+{\beta}-sesquiphellandrene$, ${\beta}-phellandrene$, camphene, geranial, ${\gamma}-bisabolene$, ar-curcumene+geranyl acetate, ${\alpha}-pinene$, ${\beta}-gurjunene$, limonene and neral. The content of monoterpene hydrocarbons increased with a concomitant lowering in the amounts of sesquiterpene hrdrocarbons and oxygenated sesquiterpenes during storage of rhizomes although contents of the oxygenated monoterpens changed little or slightly during the storage. During the storage the content of such monoterpenes as camphene, ${\beta}-phellandrene$ and citral (neral and geranial) increased whereas the content of such sesquiterpenes as zingiberene and $citronellol+{\beta}-sesquiphellandrene$ decreased. The composition of shoot oil differed from that of mother rhizome oil in having higher content of terpene hydrocarbons and also in the higher content of bornyl acetate, ${\beta}-gurjunene$ and ar-curcumene+geranyl acetate and lower in citral (neral and geranial).
Employing 7-15 resistant and 8-15 susceptible Japanese black pine (Pinus thunbergii Parl.) trees to pine gall midge (Thecodiplosis japonensis Uchida et Inouye) as samples, needle monoterpenes were analysed by GLC in January and June, and observation was made on the oviposition preference. Following results were obtained. 1. In January, the resistant trees showed higher contents of myrcene, limonene, ${\beta}$-phellandrene and terpinolene but lower contents of ${\alpha}$-and ${\beta}$-pinene and camphene compared to the susceptible trees. But in June, ${\alpha}$-pinene, camphene, limonene, ${\beta}$-phellandrene and terpinolene were higher and the content of ${\beta}$-pinene and myrcene were lower in the resistant trees than the susceptible trees. 2. The content of limonene was higher by the 6.8 percent and the content of ${\beta}$-pinene was lower by the 9.2 percent in the resistant trees than in the susceptible trees in June. 3. No preference for oviposition was found between resistant and susceptible trees. But in the resistant trees gall formation rate was quite lower than the susceptible trees. It was considered, therefore, that limonene and ${\beta}$-pinene content in the needle might be used as an indicator of the resistant Japanese black pine to the pine gall midge regardless of season.
Essential oil of the root of Angelica dahurica Benth et Hook(Umbelliferae) was investigated. Essential oil was obtained from the dried roots by steam distillation and fractionated by column chromatography. Each isolate or fraction was identified by GC, GC-MS and spectral analysis. It was found to contain eleven monoterpenes such as ${\alpha}-pinene(4.74%),\;campben, {\beta}-pinene,\;myrcene,\;{\alpha}-phellandrene,\;{\delta}-3-carene(39.4%),\;{\alpha}-terpinene,\;{\rho}-cymene,\;{\beta}-phellandrene,\;{\alpha}-terpinene,\;terpinolene\;and\;also\;found\;to\;contain\;4-vinylguaiacol,\;iso-elemicin,\;{\beta}-elemene$, caryophyllene, ligustilide, osthol and seven tentatively identified sesquiterpenes.
Monoterpenes, phenolic substances, growth substances and total nitrogen from normal needles and infested needles attacked by Thecodiplosis japonensis were compared for Pinus densiflora, Pinus thunbergii and Pinus rigida. The results obtained in this study were as follows: 1. Major monoterpene components in P. densiflora needles were ${\beta}$-phellandrene, ${\alpha}$-pinene and those in P. rigida needles were ${\beta}$-pinene and ${\alpha}$-pinene. In P. rigida resistant to this insect, infested needles showed higher ${\alpha}$-pinene, ${\beta}$-pinene and myrcene but lower camphene, limonene and ${\beta}$-phellandrene than normal needles. 2. Orcinol, catechol ferulic acid, salicylic acid and five unknowns were detected in P. rigida needles whereas orcinol, catechol, ferulic acid and four unknowns in P. densiflora needles. 3. Tryptophan, a precursor of IAA, was detected in larvae and also in gall tissues of both P. densiflora and P. thunbergii needles. This fact shows that growth substances may involve in gall formation by Thecodiplosis japonensis. 4. Total nitrogen contents per unit needle weight were neither significantly different between P. densiflora and P. rigida, nor between normal and infested needles.
The essential oils of leaves and resins from P. densiflora and P. koraiensis were analyzed to identify their components. After each retention times of 45 known terpenoids were dertermined with a fixed analytical condition by GC the essential oil compounds of leaves and resins were identified by comparing their retention times with the retention times of known standards. To confirm these results the essential oil components of leaves from P. koraiensis were analized by 2 different GC/MS. According to these results, 36 terpenoids in essential oils of leaves from P. densiflora and P. koraiensis were identified and 15 terpenoids and 22 terpenoids were identified from P. koraiensis resin and P. densiflora resin, respectively. The major components which are more than 2% of total amaunt of volatile components were as follows: 1. The major terpenoids of leaves from red pine. ${\alpha}$-pinene, camphene, ${\beta}$-pinene, D-limonene, ${\beta}$-phellandrene, myrcene, terpinolene, ${\alpha}$-terpineol. 2. The major terpenoids of leaves from korean pine. ${\alpha}$-pinene, camphene, myrcene, D-limonene, 3-carene, terpinolene, bornyl acetate, ${\beta}$-caryophyllene, ${\alpha}$-terpineol, borneol, ${\delta}$-cardinene. 3. The major terpenoids of resin from red pine. ${\alpha}$-pinene, ${\beta}$-pinene, myrcene, ${\beta}$-phellandrene, linalool, linalyl acetate. 4. The major terpenoids of resin from korean pine. ${\alpha}$-pinene, ${\beta}$-pinene, D-limonene, ${\beta}$-caryophyllene, phytol.
