$\alpha$-Sialon 세라믹스의 역학적 성질과 산화거동에 미치는 $Y_2O_3$$CeO_2$의 첨가영향 (Effect of Yttria and Ceria on Mechanical Properties and Oxidation Behaviors of $\alpha$-Sialon Ceramics)

  • The powder mixture of Si3N4-AlN-Y2O3, Si3N4-AlN-CeO2 and Si3N4-AlN-Y2O3-CeO2 system was hot-pressed at 175$0^{\circ}C$ for 2h in N2 to prepare $\alpha$-Sialon ceramics. The mechanical property and oxidation behaviour of the prepared $\alpha$-Sialon ceramics were investigated. At 120$0^{\circ}C$, oxidation resistance was best for the Y2O3 added $\alpha$-Sialon ceramics and oxidation rate increased when the amount of CeO2 increased. But when the mixture of Y2O3 and CeO2 added $\alpha$-Sialon ceramics showed a good oxidation resistance. Fracture toughness of (Y2O3+CeO2) added $\alpha$-Sialon ceramics was higher than Y2O3 added $\alpha$-Sialon ceramics.

  • 김천규석으로부터 합성한 질화규소와 시약급의 AIN과 $Y_2O_3$를 출발원료로 하여 $Si_3N_4-0.1Y_2O_3-0.9AIN$의 tie line에서 X=0.6, 0.4(금속고용량)인 조성으로부터 AIN 의 양을 감소시킨 조성과 $Y_2O_3$를 증가시키는 조성으로 1750~1800도에서 소결시켜 부분 안정화 $\alpha$-Sialon을 제조하였다. $\alpha$-Sialon 생성에는 $Y_2O_3$ 첨가량보다 AIN 첨가량에 밀접하게 관련되며 AIN은 $\beta$단위격자 보다 $\alpha$ 단위격자로 우선적으로 고용되었으며 $Y_2O_3$가 과잉으로 첨가된 조성에서는 melillite 형성과 입자 조대화 및 $\alpha$-Sialon의 분배로 인하여 yttrium silicide 와 금속 Si를 형성하였으며 기계적 물성은 저하하였다. 본 실험에서 얻은 기계적 물성의 최고 값은 모두 1780도에서 얻어졌으며 그 값은 꺽임강도 723MPa, 파괴 인성 4.5MN/m^3/2, 경도 19.3GPa이었다.

Materials Development in α-Sialon Ceramics

  • The solid solutions of ${\alpha}-Si_3N_4$, i.e. ${\alpha}$-sialons, are represented by a general formula of $M_x(Si,Al)_{12}(O,N)_{16}$, in which metal ions (M) dissolve into interstitial sites to stabilize the structure. Processing methods for the fabrication of ${\alpha}/{\beta}$-sialon composites, ${\alpha}-sialon/{\beta}Si_3N_4$ composites, refractory or tough ${\alpha}$-sialon ceramics have been developed to tailor the mechanical properties. Translucent and photoluminescent properties have been investigated recently. A number of applications of ${\alpha}$-sialon ceramics as engineering and optical ceramics are also presented.

$\alpha$-Sialon/SiC Whisker 복합재료의 기계적 물성 및 마모 특성 연구 (Mechanical and Tribological Properties of $\alpha$-Sialon/SiC Whisker Composites)

  • Sialon ceramics are presently seen as promising materials with high hardness, strength, fracture toughness and corrosion resistance for friction and wear applications. The objective of present work is to improve of mechanical properties and wear resistance of $\alpha$-Sialon(x=0.4) by addition of SiC whisker. $\alpha$-sialon(x=0.4)/SiC whisker composites were obtained by hot-isostatic pressing at 173$0^{\circ}C$ for 1 hour under 1757Kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$ N2 pressure after pressureless sintering the mixture of Si3N4, Y2O3, AlN at 1780~180$0^{\circ}C$ for 3~5 hours in N2 atmosphere. As the amount of SiC whisker content increased, relative density and hardness were decreased, however fracture toughness, bending strength and tribological properties were improved. Tribological properties of $\alpha$-Sialon/15 vol% SiC whisker composite were improved in spite of its low mechanical properties.

  • Silicon nitride powder synthesized from Kimcheon quartzite and commercial reagents, AlN and Y2O3 powders were used to prepare the partially and fully stabilized Y-${\alpha}$-Sialon ceramics by the pressureless sintering at 1800$^{\circ}C$ for 2 hours in N2 atmosphere. Good mechanical properties of the prepared Y-${\alpha}$-Sialon ceramics were found over 0.4∼0.6 of the Yttrium solubility range, X, in the equation Yx(Si12-4.5x, Al4.5x)(O1.5x, N16-1.5x). The properties of these prepared Y-${\alpha}$-Sialon ceramics were compared with those prepared in the same way from a commercial Toshiba Si3N4 powder.

알콕사이드로부터 $\alpha$-Sialon 세라믹스의 제조 및 기계적 성질(I) (Synthesis of $\alpha$-Sialon Ceramics from an Alkoxide and Their Mechanical Properties(I))

  • The powders of the system Si3N4-Y2O3-AlN were prepared using Si(OC2H5)4 and YCl3.6H2O together with commercial AlN powder. $\alpha$-Si3N4 was prepared by the carbothermal reduction and nitridation of the hydrolyzed gel at 135$0^{\circ}C$ for 10h in N2 atmosphere. YCl3.6H2O was observed to be changed to Y2O3 during the reaction. $\alpha$-Sialon(X=0.2, 0.4, 0.6) ceramics were obtained by hot-pressing the Si3N4-Y2O3-AlN mixture at 178$0^{\circ}C$ for 1h under 30 MPa. The content of $\alpha$-Sialon increased with increasing metal solubility(x value) and $\alpha$-Sialon single phase was obtained at the metal solubility of 0.6. With increasing metal solubility, flexural strength, fracture toughness and thermal shock resistence were decreased, while the microhardness was increased. Large elongated $\beta$-Si3N4 grains were mainly observed at lower metal solubility. Mechanical prorerties of the sintered ceramics with X=0.2 were measured as follows : flexural strength ; 650 MPa, fracture toughness ; 3.63 MN/m3/2, hardness ; 14.7 GPa, thermal shock resistence temperature ; 58$0^{\circ}C$.

비화학양론 조성에 따른 $Eu^{2+}$ 활성화 $\alpha$-sialon 황색 형광체의 광학 특성 연구 (The optical property study of $Eu^{2+}$-activated yellow $\alpha$-sialon phosphors with Non-stoichiometry composition)

  • 일반적인 고상반응법을 이용하여 $Eu^{2+}$ 활성화 $\alpha$-sialon 황색 형광체를 합성한 후 구조 및 광학특성을 측정하였다. $Ca^{2+}$$Si^{4+}$ 이온의 비화학양론적 첨가에 따른 광학 특성 측정결과, 중심 발광 파장이 약 585 nm 인 높은 휘도의 황색형광체를 얻을 수 있었다. 본 연구에서는 $Ca^{2+}:Si^{4+}$ 첨가비에 따른 광학특성 변화를 관찰하였으며, 이를 바탕으로 구조 및 미세구조 변화에 대한 연구를 수행하였다. 20 mol%의 Al deficient 조성을 갖는 형광체의 광학특성 측정결과 화학양론조성에 비해 20% 이상의 휘도향상을 나타내었다. 이와 같은 결과로부터, 본 연구에서 제시된 Al deficient $\alpha$-sialon 황색 형광체는 자외선 및 청색 LED용 형광체로 적합할 것으로 판단된다.

Y2O3-AlN 미량첨가 질화규소의 열간가압소결 (Hot-Pressing of Silicon Nitride Containing Low Amounts of $Y_2O_3$ and AlN)

  • Partially stabilized alpha-sialon composition (X=0.1) powder was hot-pressed at 1800~200$0^{\circ}C$ for 0~90 min with 30 MPa. Sintering behavior, phase changes and mechanical properties for the specimens were studied. As sintering temperature was raised from 1800 to 190$0^{\circ}C$, the relative density tended to increase and reached 99% of theoretical at 190$0^{\circ}C$. However the amount of alpha-sialon decreased because alpha-sialon transformed to beta-Si3N4 and yttrium rich silicate glass. In the case of hot-pressing at 190$0^{\circ}C$ for various times, densification increased with sintering time and full densification above 99% of theoretical was attained by 30 min. The amount of alpha-sialon decreased with sintering time. The maximum strength of 825 MPa was obtained by hot-pressing at 190$0^{\circ}C$ for 60 min.

  • α/β sialon based composites containing silicon nitride whisker and silicon carbide platelet were fabricated by hot pressing. Effect of the reinforcing agents on the α to β phase transformation of the sialon as well as on the mechanical properties was investigated. Silicon nitride whisker and silicon carbide platelet promoted the phse transformation. TEM/EDS analysis revealed that the grain containing the whisker had 'core-rim' structure; core being high purity Si3N4 whisker and rim being β-sialon. Flexural strength of the composite decreased with the reinforcement addition which, on the other hand, improved fracture toughness of it. High temperature strength was measured at 1300℃ to be about 130 MPa lower than that measured at RT for the whisker reinforced composites.

$\alpha$'-Sialon 세라믹스에서의 주상형 입자성장 (Growth of Elongated Grains in $\alpha$'-Sialon Ceramics)

  • The effects of the ${\beta}-Si_3N_4$ starting particle size and $\alpha$/$\beta$ phase transformation during sintering process on the microstructure evolution of Yttrium $\alpha$-Sialon ceramics were investigated. As-received ${\beta}-Si_3N_4$ powder (mean particle size: 0.54$\mu$m) and classified ${\beta}-Si_3N_4$ powder(mean particle size: $0.26\mu{m}$) were used as starting powders. With decreasing the starting particle size, the growth of elongated grains was enhanced, which resulted in the whisker -like microstructure with elongated grains. These results were discussed in relation to the two-dimensional nucleation and growth theory. In the specimen heat treated at $1600^{\circ}C$ for 10h before sintering at $1950^{\circ}C$for 1h under 40atm(2-step sintering), the grain size was smaller than of the 1-step sintering at 195$0^{\circ}C$ for 1h. However, bimodal microstructure evolution were not not remarkable in both sample, which is ascribed to the $\alpha$-phase contents existing in ${\beta}-Si_3N_4$ starting powder.
