침전법으로 제조한 Alumina 분말의 특성(III) : 소결거동 (Properties of Alumina Powder Prepared by Precipitation Method (III) : Sintering Behavior)

  • Alpha alumina powder with fine particle size and narrow particle size distribution was prepared by precipitation method using Al2(SO4)3.18H2O as a starting material. The alpha alumina powder was prepared by calcining aluminum hydroxide which was formed under various pH values. The sinterabilityof alpha alumina powder and the effect of MgO on the sinterability of alpha alumina powder were investigated. The sinterability of alpha alumina powder was the order of pH=10≒pH11>pH=7≒pH9, and alpha alumina obtained from boehmite which was prepared by precipitation method reached to 97.5% of theoretcal density by the pressureless sintering. The effect of MgO on volume shrinkage of alumina was very slight in the initial sintering stage but remarkable in the final sintering stage. It was also found that MgO controlled effectively the grain growth of alumina.

  • boehmite which is the by-product in alcohol process contains anions such as $Cl^-,{NO_3}^-.or\; CH_3COO^-$ Influe-nce of these anions was studied on properties of $\alpha$-alumina powders prepared by treating the transformed ${\gamma}$-alumina with the alumina sol and $\alpha$-alumina seeds (d_{50}=0.36\mu\textrm{m}$) Disperal 20/1 and 10/1 containing $Cl^-$ produced spherical powder Disperal 20/2 with ${NO_3}^-$ produced equiaxed powder and Disperal 10/3 with $CH_3$ $COO^-$ irregular shaped and sized powder. All of these $\alpha$-alumina powders were submicron. Although the green density of the alumina powder derived from Disperal 10/1 by calcination at $1200^{\circ}C$/1h. was 53% it did not sinter even at $1550^{\circ}C$ for 2h. which implies that its d50 is greater than $3\mu\textrm{m}$. The others gave green densities in the range of 44~47% but they sintered as well as the AKP-30 at $1500^{\circ}C$/2 h or $1550^{\circ}C$/2 h.

  • The phase transformation temperature from $\theta$- to $\alpha$-alumina was lowered from 1214$^{\circ}C$ to 114$0^{\circ}C$ in DSC by treating ${\gamma}$-alumina obtained by calcination of boehmite at $700^{\circ}C$ for 2hrswith $\alpha$-Al2O3 seeds (d50=0.36${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$) and 3wt% of the alumina sol. $\alpha$-Al2O3 seeds seemed to lower to the transformation temperature and the alumina sol suppressed the high temperature agglormeration. The effect was increased as the amount of the sol was increased, which was supported by TEM and particle size distribution. For an example, spherical ${\gamma}$-alumina powder with d50=0.54${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ was prepared by treating the ${\gamma}$-alumina with 9 wt% of the alumina sol and 3wt% of the $\alpha$-Al2O3. It sintered to 99% of the theoretical density at 150$0^{\circ}C$ for 2hrs. and it had relatively homogeneous microstructure with 2~3${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ sized grains.

  • 침전법에 의해서 pH가 7, 9, 10, 11인 조건에서 생성된 알루미늄 수산화물을 출발물질로 하여 열처리에 따른 알루미나 분말의 특성을 연구하였다. $600^{\circ}C$에서 2시간 동안 열처리하였을 때 비정질 알루미늄 수산화물의 결정수가 탈수된 후에 생성된 최초의 상은 비정질 알루미나의 비표면적은 감소하였다. 비정질 알루미늄 수산화물을 제외한 나머지 알루미늄 수산화물로부터 결정수의 탈수는 비표면적을 증가시켰으며 AlOOH 형태의 수산화물의 존재비가 클수록 전이 알루미나 존재영역까지는 비표면적이 더 크게 나타났다. $\alpha-Al_2O_3$로의 전이속도는 동일온도에서 pH=7 > pH=10 > pH=9 > pH=11의 순서로 일어났으며, 생성된 $\alpha-Al_2O_3$ 분말의 morphology는 알루미늄 수산화물의 외형을 남긴 형골입자(skeleton particle였다. 또한, 열처리 온도의 증가와 $\alpha-Al_2O_3$로의 전이가 일어남에 따라 비표면적의 감소와 더불어 입자성장이 일어나다.

  • From alumina powder and TEOS, $\alpha$-Al2O3/SiO2 composite powder for reaction-sintered mullite was synthesized by heterogeneous coagulation and surface coating, and investigated the mullitization reaction and sintering behavor of these powders. In $\alpha$-Al2O3/SiO2 composite powder prepared by heterogeneous coagulation, each alumina particles were surrounded by silica particles of 50~60 nm in size. And the alumina particles in composite powder prepared by surface coating were coated by uniform silica layer with thickness of 50 nm. In both methods, mullitization reaction was completed at 1$650^{\circ}C$ for 3h, and specimen sintered above 145$0^{\circ}C$ was about 95% fo the theoretical relative density. Mullite grains formed from the reaction with composite powders showed spherical shape with a size of 1~2${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$.

  • Alumina ceramics was reinforced by in-situ formation of La-${\beta}$-aluminate in ${\alpha}$-alumina matrix. The powder mixture of which composition is (100-12x)Al2O3+x(La2O3+11Al2O3) was prepared for the formation of La-${\beta}$-aluminate in ${\alpha}$-alumina matrix. The amount of La-${\beta}$-aluminate in the matrix was controlled by varing x which is number of moles. The dense composite was produced by sintering at 1600$^{\circ}C$ in air or hot-pressing at 1550$^{\circ}C$ under 30 MPa. Bending strength and fracture toughness were increased, resulting from the grain growth inhibition and the crack deflection and crack bridging mechanism when La-${\beta}$-aluminate was produced in ${\alpha}$-alumina matrix.

폭발 충격을 받은 Alumina 분말의 열분석 (Thermoanalytical Measurements of Shocked Alumina Powder)

  • 급격하게 충격을 받은 Linde A alumina분말에 대해서 동적시차열량 계법(dynamic differential calorimetry)으로 잔류응력 energy를 촉정 조사하고 투과전자현미경으로 결함구조를 조사하였다. 충격을 받지않은 alumina분말과 비교해 보면 충격을 받은 분말을 대개 80$0^{\circ}C$ 내지 120$0^{\circ}C$범위에서 energy 방출을 보여 주었으며, 충격을 받은 대다수의 $\alpha$-alumina결정들은 변형으로 인한 결함구조를 보여 주었다.

  • This study was investigated to the reaction of alumina sintering with alkaline. The soluble $NaAlO_2$ was made after the commercial ${\alpha}-Al_2O_3$ was calcinated with NaOH. The reaction of alumina was carried out to be based on the effects of calcination temperature, time, and the mixing ratio of ${\alpha}-Al_2O_3/NaOH$. The alumina was calcined over $500^{\circ}C$ with NaOH powder after it was sieved with 170/270 mesh. The calcined alumina with NaOH powder was dissolved into $25^{\circ}C$ distilled water and filtrated, and HCI was added to adapt pH 6.5~7.5. The residue was separated with vacuum pump for filtration after it was adapted to proper pH, and aluminum compound was precipitated with $Al(OH)_3$. The investigation was carried out with the variables; the calcination temperature($500-900^{\circ}C$), the calcination time (30~90 min), and the concentration of HCI when leaching(0.5~3.0N) respectively. In this investigation, the main product of ${\alpha}-Al_2O_3$ and NaOH was $NaAlO_2$ and the maximum conversion ratio was 91.4% under the optimum conditions as followed ; the ratio of NaOH/${\alpha}-Al_2O_3$ was 1.5 and the calcination conditions were $800^{\circ}C$ and 90 min.

합성한 Aluminum Sec-Butoxide로부터 알콕사이드졸겔법에 의한 알루미나 미분말의 제조 (Preparation of the Fine Alumina Powder from the Synthisized Aluminum-Sec-Butoxide by the Alkoxide Sol-Gel Process)

  • Aluminum sec-butoxide was synthesized from aluminum foil and alcohol. The characteristics of the alumina powder prepared from the synthesized alkoxide by the Yoldas method were studied. As a result of measuring the synthesized aluminum sec-butoxide by GC, the purity of the synthesized alkoxide was 98.7% on the basis of commercial alkoxide and the yield was 78.5%. A127-MASNMR analysis shows that powders dried at 9$0^{\circ}C$ and $\alpha$-Al2O3 have 6-cordinated structure and ${\gamma}$-Al2O3 has 4-coordinated structure. The characteristics of alumina powder prepared from the synthisized alkoxide showed the same characteristics with the alumina powder prepared from the commercial alkoxide.

구형의 단분산 Alumina 및 Mg-doped Alumina의 합성과 소결에 관한 연구 (Preparation of Monodispersed, Sheperical Al2O3 and Mg-doped Al2O3 Powder and Sintering Characterization of These Powders)

  • Monodispersed alumina and Mg-doped alumina fine particles were prepared by controlled hydrolysis of alkoxides. Aluminium alkoxide and magnesium alkoxide were dissolved into complex solvent which was composed of hydrophobic n-octanol and hydrophilic acetonitrile. Hydroxypropyl cellulose(HPC) was used as a dispersant for the alumina particles. The size of these prepared powders was approximately 0.3 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. In the case of sintering above 100$0^{\circ}C$, most of these prepared powders were transformed to $\alpha$-alumina. The relative density of the sintered body of these prepared powders at 1$600^{\circ}C$ was 98%. The sintered body of the Mg-doped alumina powder had more uniform grain size than that of the undoped alumina podwer.
