0.5wt% Ru/$\alpha-Al_2O_3$ catalysts are prepared by deposition-precipitation method for the preferential CO oxidation In order to investigate the effect of pH on the Ru dispersion and particle size, the pH of precursor solution is adjusted to between 5.5 and 9.5. 0.5wt% Ru/$\alpha-Al_2O_3$ catalyst prepared at the pH of 6.5 has high Ru dispersion of 17.9% and small particle size of 7.7nm. In addition, 0.5wt% Ru/$\alpha-Al_2O_3$ catalyst prepared at the pH 6.5 is easily reduced at low temperatures below $150^{\circ}C$ due to high dispersion of $RuO_2$ particle and shows high CO conversion over 90% in the wide temperature range between $100^{\circ}C$ and $160^{\circ}C$. Moreover, the deposition-precipitation is a feasible method to improve the Ru dispersion as compared to the impregnation method. The 0.5wt% Ru/$\alpha-Al_2O_3$ catalyst prepared by deposition-precipitation exhibits higher CO conversion than 0.5wt% Ru/$\alpha-Al_2O_3$ catalysts prepared by impregnation due to higher metal dispersion and better reducibility at low temperature.
Submicron ${\alpha}-SiC$ powder with $Al_2O_3$ addition was hot-pressed under the controlled heating and pressurizing schedule. $SiO_2$ layer on ${\alpha}-SiC$ powder was effective for the sintering of ${\alpha}-SiC$ powder when $Al_2O_3$ was used as an additive. Applying of pressure under the controlled schedule accelerated the rearrangment of SiC grains, yielding 98% of theoretical density of SiC even at $1900^{\circ}C$. Flexural strength of the specimen containing 2 wt% $Al_2O_3$ was increased as increasing the hot-pressing temperature up to $2050^{\circ}C$ and maximum value was 800 MPa, while the flexural strength of the specimen containing 10 wt% $Al_2O_3$ was decreased as increasing the hot-pressing temperature above $2000^{\circ}C$ due to the formation of continuous grain boundary phase. Fracture toughness of the specimens was in the range of $3.5~4.5\;MNm^{-3/2}$ regardless of the amount of $Al_2O_3$ addition.
The phase transformation temperature from $\theta$- to $\alpha$-alumina was lowered from 1214$^{\circ}C$ to 114$0^{\circ}C$ in DSC by treating ${\gamma}$-alumina obtained by calcination of boehmite at $700^{\circ}C$ for 2hrswith $\alpha$-Al2O3 seeds (d50=0.36${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$) and 3wt% of the alumina sol. $\alpha$-Al2O3 seeds seemed to lower to the transformation temperature and the alumina sol suppressed the high temperature agglormeration. The effect was increased as the amount of the sol was increased, which was supported by TEM and particle size distribution. For an example, spherical ${\gamma}$-alumina powder with d50=0.54${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ was prepared by treating the ${\gamma}$-alumina with 9 wt% of the alumina sol and 3wt% of the $\alpha$-Al2O3. It sintered to 99% of the theoretical density at 150$0^{\circ}C$ for 2hrs. and it had relatively homogeneous microstructure with 2~3${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ sized grains.
From alumina powder and TEOS, $\alpha$-Al2O3/SiO2 composite powder for reaction-sintered mullite was synthesized by heterogeneous coagulation and surface coating, and investigated the mullitization reaction and sintering behavor of these powders. In $\alpha$-Al2O3/SiO2 composite powder prepared by heterogeneous coagulation, each alumina particles were surrounded by silica particles of 50~60 nm in size. And the alumina particles in composite powder prepared by surface coating were coated by uniform silica layer with thickness of 50 nm. In both methods, mullitization reaction was completed at 1$650^{\circ}C$ for 3h, and specimen sintered above 145$0^{\circ}C$ was about 95% fo the theoretical relative density. Mullite grains formed from the reaction with composite powders showed spherical shape with a size of 1~2${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$.
This study was carried out to research on the optimum condition of $MgAl_2O_4$ spinel synthesis and the chara-ceteristics of its sintered bodies. In this study the used materials-MgO $Al_2O_3$-were prepared from the extragrade chemicals $Mg(OH)_2 Al(OH)_3$ respectively. The tendency to spinel synthesis and sintering condition were discussed about additives of SEM and the characteristics of sintered bodies were measured by TMA etc, The results were as follows ; 1. The addion of $TiO_2$ promoted more effectively the sinterbility than that of $MnO_2$. 2. Residual $\alpha$-$Al_2O_3$ and MgO in theorectical composition samples were disappeared at 1$600^{\circ}C$ 3. When added MnO2 residual $\alpha$-$Al_2O_3$ and MgO were disappeared at 150$0^{\circ}C$ and 1$600^{\circ}C$ respectively. 4, . When added $TiO_2$ residual $\alpha$-$Al_2O_3$ and MgO were disappeared at 150$0^{\circ}C$ and 134$0^{\circ}C$ respectively.
The initiation and growth of $\alpha$-Al2O3/metal composites by the directed oxidation of molten commercial AlZnMg-alloy at 1223-1423K were investigated. Spontaneous bulk growth did not occur on the alloy alone. but the uniform initiation and growth of the composite were obtained by putting a thin layer of SiO2 particles on the surface of the alloy. Without SiO2 the external surface of the oxide layer was convered by MgO and MgAl2O4. But with the SiO2 reaction initiate the porous ZnO layers were found on the growth surface. The higher process temperature yielded a lower metal content. The oxidation product of $\alpha$-Al2O3 was found to be oriented with c-axis parallel to th growth direction. The growth rates increased with temperature and the apparent activation energy was 111.8 kJ/mol.
To precipitate the complex gel of flux and aluminum hydroxides gel, aqueous solution of the mixture of $Na_2CO_3\;and\;Na_2PO_4{\cdot}12H_2O$ was added with stirring in aqueous solution of the mixture of $Al_2(SO_4)_3{\cdot}14{\sim}18H_2O,\;Na_2SO_4$, and then the complex gel was aged in $0{\sim}30h\;at\;90^{\circ}C$. As aging time passed, the aluminum hydroxides was grown into the acicular AlO(OH) gel. Also, aging time had an effect on physical properties of the AlO(OH) gel and on crystal growth of the flaky ${\alpha}-Al_2O_3$ prepared by molten-salt precipitation. In this study, the complex gel was crystallized in temperature range of $400{\sim}1,200^{\circ}C$ after drying at $110^{\circ}C$, and then it was investigated to effect of aging time on precipitation temperature, size, thickness, morphology and particle size distribution of the flaky ${\alpha}-Al_2O_3$ crystal. As aging time passed, the flaky a${\alpha}-Al_2O_3$ crystal showed a tendency toward an increase in size and thickness as result from an increase in BET surface area and pore volume of the acicular AlO(OH) gel.
$Ti_3AlC_2$ was corroded between 800 and $1100^{\circ}C$ in an Ar-0.2% $SO_2$ gas atmosphere according to the equation: $Ti_3AlC_2+O_2{\rightarrow}rutile-TiO_2+{\alpha}-Al_2O_3$ + (CO or $CO_2$). The scales that formed on the $Ti_3AlC_2$ were thin and rich in ${\alpha}-Al_2O_3$, whose growth rate was exceedingly slow. The $TiO_2$ was present either as the outermost surface scale or a mixture inside the ${\alpha}-Al_2O_3$-rich scale. In the $Ti_3AlC_2$, the activity and diffusivity of Ti were low, whereas those of Al were high. This was the main reason for the superior corrosion resistance of $Ti_3AlC_2$ over TiAl.
Sintering and microstructure of Ce-TZP/Al2O3 composite with $\alpha$-Al2O3 matrix containing dispersed 5~50 vol% ZrO2 were discussed. Sintered density was increased with elevating forming pressure in range of 6~300 MPa and about >99.2% of theoretical density was obtained at 1$600^{\circ}C$ for 2h in case of 300 MPa of 6~300 MPa uniaxially cold-pressed compacts containing 20 vol% ZrO2. All kinds of different batch composition exhibited nearly the same shrinkage behaviour with end-point shrinkage between 20 and 24%, and had the maximum shrinkage rate (0.41~0.54%/min) around 140$0^{\circ}C$. Grain growth was occurred faster in $\alpha$-Al2O3 than in {{{{ gamma }}-Al2O3 starting matrix during sintering at 1$600^{\circ}C$. Bimodal pore size distribution of interaglomerate pores with size of 0.03~0.2 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ and of interaglomerate pores with size of around 60 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ was obtained in Ce-TZP/$\alpha$-Al2O3 composite sintered at 130$0^{\circ}C$. But unimodal pore size distribution with around 0.1 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ was observed in Ce-TZP/{{{{ gamma }}-Al2O3 composite sintered at the same temperature. Microcracks were occurred due to the tlongrightarrowm transformation of ZrO2 on cooling process.
The properties of the powders of the system Al2O3-ZrO2-Y2O3 prepared by precipitation method were investigated. Al2(SO4)3$.$18H2O3, ZrOCl2$.$8H2O and YCl3$.$6H2O were used as starting materials. Amorphous aluminum hydrate prepared by precipitation method was completely transformed to alpha Al2O3 as a result of calcining at 1100$^{\circ}C$ for 1 hr and gamma, delta and theta phases appeared as transition phases. In ZrO2-Y2O3 system prepared by co-precipitation method, the crystallization temperature of ZrO2 was increase with Y2O3 contents. The coupled crystallization occured in coprecipitated Al2O3-ZrO2-Y2O3 system, therefore the formation temperature of alpha Al2O3 and ZrO2-Y2O3 system. In this ternary system, the powder morphology showed a particular shape which was composed of large Al2O3 grains having small spherical ZrO2 particles within large Al2O3 grain and relatively large ZrO2 particles along the grian boundaries.
