  • A distribution map of black pine, Pinus thunbergii, in south Korea was prepared through field surveys. According to Mirov(1967), the range of black pine is limited in east Asia, Japan and Korea; its northern limit is at about 41。34' north and its southern limit on Takara island, south Kyushu, at 29。 north. According to the present map, its northern limit coincided with the isopath of warmth index 100 by Yim(1977). The density of pine in grid mesh, about 4 km * 4 km, was higher at costal area than that in inland area, and it was also higher at sea side slope than the opposite slope of the same mountain. This suggests that the ecological distribution of black pine is greatly affected by salt content of the soil or the optimal range of summed temperature for the pine growth.

  • Two specimens of Chlorophthalmus nigromarginatus Kamohara, 1953 (51.02 mm, 66.04 mm in standard length) belonging to the family Chlorophthalmidae were collected on February 8, 2022 in the eastern Jeju-do Island, Korea using a bottom trawl. The species has the following morphological characteristics: snout length almost the same as orbit diameter, bump absent on predorsal, caudal fin with posterior black margin. C. nigromarginatus is morphologically very similar to C. acutifrons but can be distinguished by caudal fin with black margin (C. acutifrons has no black margin). Molecular analyses showed that our specimens almost matched with C. nigromarginatus according to mtDNA 16S rRNA sequences (99.8%). Therefore, we propose a new Korean name for C. nigromarginatus, "Geom-eun-kko-ri-pa-rang-nun-mae-tung-i".

  • We have fabricated source-drain electrodes for OTFTs using a screen-printing technique with carbon-black pastes as conductive paste. And effects of dispersants contents (SOP 10-40%) on the dispersity of carbon-black pastes and characteristics of screen-printed source-drain electrodes for OTFTs using two types of dispersants (DB-2150, DB-9077) were investigated. As contents of both dispersants were increased the dispersity of carbon-black mill-bases was improved, whereas the carbon-black pastes exhibited different dispersion characteristics. For the case of DB-2150, the dispersity of the pastes was improved with increasing dispersant content and the storage modulus G' in their rheology characteristics were reduced. But, for the DB-9077, the storage modulus G' of pastes were increased with dispersant content due to the flocculated network structure formed by interactions among carbon-black powders and dispersants. But, since this flocculated network structure of the pastes using DB-9077 resulted in the conduction path of carbon-black structures, the conductivities of screen-printed electrodes and mobilities of the OTFTs with them were better than those using pastes with DB-2150.

  • Analyses of UV-Vis spectrum and reflectance are useful tools to identify pearls of which color was naturally made or chemically changed. Contents of some trace elements of pearls by using ED-XRF may give us the information that the pearls were originated from marine shells or freshwater shells, and may give us whether the pearls were chemically treated or not. Three types of chemically untreated pearls, freshwater cultured, Akoya cultured and Tahitian cultured, were treated with silver nitrate. UV-Vis absorbance spectrum of Ag was changed after treatment, and reflectance of pearls was decreased. Absorbance of natural black colored Tahitian cultured pearls at 400, 500 and 700 nm was observed. Natural black colored freshwater cultured pearls showed two characteristic absorption patterns in UV-Vis spectra at 380-400, 480-500 nm. Unlike naturally black colored Tahitian cultured pearls, the absorption spectrum at 700 nm could not be found from black freshwater cultured pearls. Manganese was not detected in the pearls from marine shells, and strontium content of the pearls from marine cultured shells was higher than that from freshwater cultured shells. According to ED-XRF analysis, Ag contents of silver nitrate treated pearls increased as more time passed, because silver ion invaded to nacre layer of the pearls. Since Ag content of the black pearls known as untreated ranged under 0.1%, analysis of Ag content may used to distinguish the black pearls are treated or not in marketplace.

  • Seoritae with green cotyledons refers to Korean native black beans harvested when the frost falls because the maturity is late. It is one of the beans preferred by consumers because of its softness and high sugar content. Because of late maturity, if the agricultural work is delayed by weather or agricultural schedule in green cotyledon black soybean (Seoritae), it affects seriously harvest and yield of soybeans. The aim of this study was to investigate the marginal seeding period on June 30, July 10 and July 20 in Cheongju and Jecheon area in Korea to produce stable soybean yield. The yields of green cotyledon black soybean as seeding date in Cheongju area are as follows: Seolitae (Yeoncheon), Seoltae (Goesan) and Seoritae (Gogseong), which increased by 23%, 56%, 23% and 40%, respectively, compare to July 10th to June 30th. As soybean sowing is delayed, the quality of soybean seeds has decreased due to the increase of immature seeds and fungal damaged seeds. The contents of anthocyanin in Cheongju area a functional substance of soybeans, was high on July 20 for Heukcheong, on June 30 for Seolitae (Yeoncheon), on July 10 for Seoritae (Goesan). The yields of Heukcheong and Seolitae (Yeoncheon) in Jecheon area were increased by 5% and 17%, respectively, compare to July 10th to June 30th, while Seolite (Goesan) and Seolite (Gogseong) were high in yields on June 30th. Similarly in Cheongju area, as the sowing period is delayed, the number of immature and mold damaged seeds in Jecheon area increased. The contents of anthocyanin in Jecheon area was high on July 10 for Heukcheong, on June 30 for Seolitae (Yeoncheon) and Seolitae (Goesan). From the above results, Sowing marginal date of green cotyledon black soybeans (Seolitae) in Cheongju area increased 30% in sowing on July 10 and increased 2% in sowing on July 20 compared to June 30. And Sowing marginal date of green cotyledon black soybeans (Seolitae) in Jecheon area increased 2% in July 10 compared to June 30, and the yield decreased rapidly on July 20. We have identified the seeding time limit of green cotyledon black bean in Chungbuk province. It will be possible to provide a variety of crop selection after double cropping of farmers. And by knowing the yield and seed quality of soybean according to sowing date, farmers will observe appropriate sowing period of soybeans for high quality. From the viewpoint of consumers, functional substances of Seoritae will meet the desire for health.

  • Since 2004, Asiatic Black Bear of the Jirisan National Park is subjected to the restoration project through the re-introduction by the Maritime Province of Siberia in Russia, North Korea, Northeastern part of China and Seoul Grand Park. The purpose of this study is to analyze diets with scat to identify Asiatic Black Bear's feeding habit and eating resources environment in the Jirisan National Park. 78 scats of Asiatic Black Bears were observed during the field studies of radio telemetry-marked bears and by chance in the Jrisan National Park, from 2005 to 2013. The relative frequency of occurrence demonstrated that the plants comprised the highest with 77%, followed by insects with 12.8%, mammals with 5.6%, birds with 0.5%, arthropoda with 0.5%, and others with 3.6%. Also, 52 scats among the collected scats that were measured for the ratio of food were subjected to dry weight, and plants were the highest with 91.2%, followed by mammals with 3.6%, insects with 1.0% and others with 4.2% in the order mentioned. Asiatic Black Bear's feed research demonstrated that the Asiatic Black Bear at Jirisan is omnivorous and that the vegetable food is the main feed instead of animal feed.

  • In September 2011, black leaf mold caused by Pseudocercospora fuligena occurred on tomato plants growing in protected cultivation conditions in Boryong and Buyeo, Chungnam Province, Korea. Symptoms of the disease initially appeared as foliar chlorotic spots on upper leaf surfaces, turned light brown and then black on lower leaf surfaces as the fungus sporulates profusely. The causal fungus was isolated from the diseased plants and identified as P. fuligena based on morphological characteristics. Pathogenicity of the fungus was proved by artificial inoculation in the green house. This is the first report of the occurrence of black leaf mold of tomato caused by P. fuligena in Korea.

  • Current black boxes have a problem of storing unnecessary imagery data recordings without data classification. For this reason, users have to erase videos every time. This method is inadequate for black boxes with limited memory capacity. In this paper, we design and implement a system that recognizes traffic accident situations and saves these recordings by classifying them according to weighted values. The system was made to save video recorded at a 30-sec interval of every event to black box folders by changing names based on weighted value data under the external environment in a 1:10 scale model car. Based on this, when the tests were performed as a major car accident while driving, the videos were created in w2 folder, and when the tests were performed as a minor car accident while stopped, the videos were created in w1 folder.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the quality characteristics of cooked rice with cereals frequently consumed in Korea by blending ratio. Seven kinds of cereals, white rice, glutinous barley, brown rice, black rice, glutinous rice, glutinous foxtail millet and proso millet, were chosen for the study. According to the results from rapid viscosity analyzer, glutinous barley had the lowest pasting temperature($66.55^{\circ}C$) and black rice had the highest values in the peak(231.77 RVU), trough(162.25 RVU), final viscosity(295.81 RVU) and set back(64.05 RVU)(p<0.05). Water absorption rate by soaking time for black rice and brown rice was increased only 18.77% and 14.57%, respectively, even after 120 minutes, whereas those of other cereals were increased up to 20.28~39.32% after 50 minutes. The pasting characteristics of white rice blended with cereals tended to be lower than white rice in the peak, trough, and final viscosity. Textural property of cooked white rice blended with black rice, brown rice, and glutinous foxtail millet showed a significantly higher value for hardness than that of cooked white rice only(p<0.05). The most preferred blending ratio of the respective cereals was 25% for glutinous barley, 10% for black rice, brown rice and proso millet, and 5% for glutinous foxtail millet and glutinous rice in the sensory evaluation for overall quality, but there were no significant differences except glutinous barley, brown rice and glutinous foxtail millet.
