Don DeLillo has shown considerable interest in terror, frequently depicting extreme dread of something terrible to happen, in his literary texts. Since more than three thousand innocent people in New York were killed by the 9-11 terrorist attack in 2001, the anticipation about what kind of fiction he would write as a New Yorker was high. DeLillo's novel Falling Man (2007) in fragmentary detail represents the scene of the terrorism from the perspective of Keith Neudecker, a lawyer who escapes the collapsing world trader center. Neudecker's post-traumatic stress disorder in the first chapter is followed by the free-associative portrayal of various impacts of the 9-11 terror on Neudecker's wife Lienne in the second chapter. The random mixture of the first person narratives from such diverse view-point characters as Neudecker's son Justin, relatives and friends, with dialogues and recollections yields a very close picture of the consequences of terrorism. Reading DeLillo's Falling Man in juxtaposition with a Japanese Canadian novel Obasan by Joy Kogawa, reminiscences of the maltreatment of Japanese Canadians during and after the second world war, surfaces the authorial intention of the two novels. They as trauma literature emerge to aim at curing the readers and proposing post-traumatic ethics. Laurie Vickroy's theory of trauma narrative and cure, E. Ann Kaplan's theory of trauma witness narrative and responsibility, and Emmanuel Levinas's theory of trauma memory and ethics offer theoretical grounds for the convincing analysis of the two texts.
A clinical evaluation was performed on 11 cases of the cardiac rupture by blunt chest trauma at the department of thoracic and cardiovascular surgery, Yeungnam University Hospital during the period from July, 1993 to May, 1995. The results were as follows ; The sex distribution was 8 mem and one women, and mean age was 41 years old. The causes of accident was traffic accident in most cases. And then one case was cultivator accident and another one was fall down. The average times from trauma to admission was 139 minutes and the patients that transferred via other hospitals have relatively long average times to 227 minutes. The average times from admission to operation was 117 minutes and we consumed 25 minutes for the preoperative preparation. The sites of injury were 7 cases in the right heart and 3 cases in the left heart. There were symptoms and signs of the cardiac tamponade(dyspnea, chest pain, nausea/vomitus, neck vein distention & hypovolemic shock) at admission and in most of them typical symptoms and signs of a tamponade appeared. Surgical approach was performed with median sternotomy in 10 cases. Subxiphoid pericardial window was created in one case. Another case which was very difficult in surgical procedure was operated under cardiopulmonary bypass and the result was good.
In this study, 1,495 cases of computerized data collected as disease entities of oral and maxillofacial injuries among patient visiting S university hospital located in Seoul in 2009 were analyzed and following results were obtained. It was found that the injury incidence in male was greater than in female (1.49:1), it occurred most frequently in the age of 7~14 years old (19.6%), and its most frequent cause was falling down (25.9%). Injuries occurred in other place including beach and open-air (24.7%) most frequently, often developed in anterior teeth (43.2%) and posterior teeth (43.1%), their incidence was relatively higher between 15:00~17:00 (10.4%) and 19:00~23:00 (7.1%) O'clock. In the relationship between causes of the injury and the diagnosis based on the international classification of disease), falling, fall, impingement, violence, traffic accident, sports and own making accident caused most frequently lip and oral open injuries (S01.5), open fracture of tooth (S02.51), close fracture of tooth (S02.50), close fracture of mandible (S02.60), close fracture of tooth (S02.50), respectively. From the above results, it is necessary to understand general characteristics of oral and maxillofacial injuries and to consider their trends for the establishment of systematic complement policies and for the performing safety training and public relations activities.
To assess the status of industrial injuries, a large scale textile company located around Taegu city was selected. And it was investigated from January 1981 to December 1982. After the department for workers safety was established, frequency rate of injury was 9.70 in 1981 and 4.15 in 1982, incidence rate per 1,000 workers was 27.11 in 1981 and 12.96 in 1982, and then, intensity rate was 0.33 in 1981 and 0.01 in 1982. The average duration of working loss was 36.64 days in 1981 and 3.34 in 1982. The incidence rate per 100 workers was 2.3 in annual average, 2.7 in men and 2.0 in women. The monthly incidence rate per 1,000 workers was highest as 3.6 in June; daily incidence rate, lowest as 1.8 on Sunday; and the highest as 14.7 from 10 to 12 o'clock in a day. The frequency by injured parts of body was highest as 42.3% on finger and 14.4% on the other part of hand, and the lower extremities as 14.4% followed. According to the kind of injuries, the laceration was the highest as 46.1%, the next was contusion as 15.4%, and the third was superficial injuries as 6.7%, According to the cause of injuries, the machinery accidents showed the highest as 47.1% and the accidents due to hand tool followed as 16.3%. By underlying cause of injuries, the environmental factors were 13.5% and the human factors 86.5%. The psychologic factors among human factors were the most common as 60.6%.
This study investigated the mandibular fractures that were treated at the Seoul National University Boramae Hospital in order to analyze the characteristics of mandibular fractures and the relationship between the causes and injury patterns. A total of 141 patients with mandibular fractures who were treated between 1996 and 2004 were analyzed retrospectively. The male to female ratio in the patient group was 5.13:1, and the mean age was 33.7 years. The most common etiologic factor was assaults (45.4%), and which was followed by activities associated with daily-life (40.4%) includeding falls, stumbling, collisions, and traffic accidents (11.3%). Single fracture sites were present in 75 patients (53.2%), two or more fracture sites were observed in other patients, and a total of 211 fracture sites were observed. The mandibular angle fractures (46.7%) was the most common in case of single fractures, and symphysis and angle fractures (45.4%) was most common in multiple fractures. Through out overall fracture sites, the most common fracture site was the symphysis (41.2%), followed by the angle (32.2%) and condyle (18.5%). Among assault and falls-related injuries, the common involving sites were the symphysis, and followed by the body and condyle. In case of traffic accidents, the symphysis fracture was the most common, and which was followed by the condyle and angle fractures. This study documented the characteristics of the mandibular fractures. The results demonstrate that preventive measures according to these characteristics will need to be implemented in order to minimize the risk of maxillofacial injuries.
This is clinicostatistical study of mandibular fractures. This study was based on a series of 677 patients with mandibular fracture during the period of 1982 to 1987. This results obtained were as follows : 1. In respect of incidence, there were high frequency in May and September, and in large city(63%). 2. The age frequency was the highest in the 20s-year old group (38.7%), and the ratio of male to female was 4.64 : 1. 3. The most common etiologic factor was blow(31.5%), but in children that was traffic accident followed by fall down. 4. The most common site of bone fractures was symphysis, followed by angle, condyle. In comparison of right and left sides, left side was more frequently involved(364 cases) than right side(257 cases). 5. The patients arrived in hospital immediately within 24 hours after accident were 62.9% of all, and 42.4% was arrived via private medical and dental clinic. 6. In respect of treatment, open reduction was 55.5% of all, closed reduction was 37.2%. In children, closed reduction was done in 50.6%.
Talus is a important structure of the ankle joint and its function is critical for ambulation and weight bearing. The talus fracture is rare, but the complications of fracture and dislocation are serious and resulting in avascular necrosis, osteoarthritis. So its treatment is carefully considered at initial status. Authors reviewed 11 cases of fracture and dislocation of the talus treated at Yeungnam university hospital from 1984 to 1991. The longest follow up was 8 years and shortest, 1 year. The results were as follows. 1. There were all males, the average age was 30 years old. 2. The most common cause was fall down(8 cases), and next traffic accident(2cases), sports injury(1 case). 3. According to Marti-Weber classification, 1 cases was type I, 1 in type II, 4 in type III and 5 in type IV. 4. The method of treatment were open reduction and internal fixation in 6 cases, the others were closed reduction in 5 cases. 5. Final results(by Hawkins grading system) were as follows, 3 cases were excellent, 4 cases were good, 1 case was fair and 3 cases were poor. 6. Complications were AVN in 2 cases, degenerative arthritis in 8 cases, malunion in 1 case. 7. The range of motion of the ankle joint was relatively preserved(74%), but in the subtalar joint it was decreased(43%).
Recently, the Supracondyle fracture of the femur is so severe and comminuted that it is difficult to treat open reduction and rigid fixation sufficiently due to violent traffic accident and external forces. The associated injuries are accompanied variously. So complications of the supracondyle fractures including joint stiffness, delayed union, infection are serious. However development of internal implant and operation skill result in relatively satisfactory function than conservative management. The authors reviewed 20 cases of the supracondyle fracture of the femur treated at Yeungnam University Hospital from 1989, Dec. To 1992, Jan. The results were as follows : 1. The male was common(70%). The 2nd-4th decade was most(87%). 2. The most common cause of injuries was traffic accident. The rate of open fracture was 35%, most of it was traffic accident. 3. According to the ASIF group classification. 4 cases were type A, 4 in type B, 12 in type C (10 in type $C_2$&$C_3$). 4. Accompanied injuries included multiple fractures in 9 cases and femoral artery injury in 1 case. 5. Among the 20 cases, conservative treatment was done in 5 cases and operative treatment was done in 15 cases. 6. Functional results (by Schatzker criteria) were as follows. The satisfactory results were achieved in 40% of cases in conservative treatment and 67% in operative treatment. 7. The average time of partial weight bearing was 15 weeks. 8. Complications were knee stiffness in 6 cases and 4 in delayed union.

Purpose: We present a case of anterior glenoid rim comminuted fracture that was treated with arthroscopic reduction and an AO headless compression screw (HCS) fixation. Materials and Methods: A 31-year old man complained of left shoulder pain after falling down on stairs. The anterior glenoid comminuted fragments were arthroscopically reduced. Fixation with an AO HCS was done after placement of 1.1 mm Kirschner wire as a guide pin through a standard cannulated anterosuperior portal. Results: Twelve months after the operation, union of the fracture was achieved and the range of motion was fully recovered. He did not complain of any discomfort during his activities of daily living. Conclusion: An AO HCS had various screw sizes and this was good for fixation of a small glenoid fracture and a long drill bit and screw driver were useful for fixation of deep seated glenoid fracture. A short guide wire could be replaced by a 1.1 mm K-wire. An AO HCS was useful for fixation of an anterior glenoid rim comminuted fracture.

High-grade liver injury is associated with high morbidity and mortality rates. We report successful emergency angioembolization and early interventional radiology support to manage a high-grade liver injury in a 29-year-old man who presented following a fall during parachute training. Upon arrival, his blood pressure was 80/40 mmHg, and emergency ultrasonography showed a liver injury with perihepatic fluid collection. The patient's blood pressure reduced to 60/40 mmHg, and emergency angiography was performed without computed tomography (CT) (door to puncture time 36 min). After angioembolization, his blood pressure returned to 120/77 mmHg. Subsequent CT revealed no additional bleeding or hollow viscus injury. He was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit and discharged without complications 30 days after admission. In this case, emergency angioembolization (without performing CT) could successfully and safely treat a hemodynamically unstable patient with a high-grade liver injury.
