Objectives : To study the Korean Medical understanding of the overview, typical symptoms, mechanism and treatment of GERD in the Donguibogam and Jingyue Quanshu focusing on the 'Tunsuan[(呑酸), acid reflux]' text. Methods : Comparison between the two medical texts in terms of overview, mechanism and treatment of the condition was made, followed by examination of medical texts of the Four Great Physicians of Jin Yuan to determine the origins that lead to such differences. Results : In the Donguibogam, the major mechanism of the illness was understood as Dampness Heat, following the theories of Liu Hejian and Zhu Danxi. In the Jingyue Quanshu, such perspective was criticized, and it was understood as Spleen-Stomach Deficient Coldness, following the theory of Li Dongyuan. Conclusions : Rather than seeing the two different understandings as contradictory, the illness should be approached with an integrative understanding of the two theories as complementary of each other.

Objectives : To analyze the classification of Tai/Shao and Yin/Yang in the Huangdineijing based on statistical concepts. Methods : Examples of Tai/Shao and Yin/Yang classification in the Huangdineijing were analyzed in terms of variables and attributes. Based on the findings, the Sasang division in medical cosmology was interpreted in the perspective of variables. Results : Of the classifications, 24 hours in a day, region, depth of lesion, the Five Types of people used one variable and four attributes each, while the organs(Liver, Heart, Lung, Kidney) and material medica used two variables and two attributes. Within these examples, the frequency of attributes following variables such as time, latitude, depth, Yin/Yang, height were different in each case. Conclusions : From a statistical standpoint, the Tai/Shao-Yin/Yang classification system in the Huangdineijing is not singular, nor is its variables. Therefore, to classify a certain phenomenon using the Tai/Shao-Yin/Yang concept, such features must be considered.

Objectives : The focus of this paper is to examine the complex manipulations listed in the major texts specializing in pediatric tuina of the Ming and Qing periods, therefore getting an overview of the genealogy of knowledge and evaluating the value of the research subject. Methods : Of complex manipulation methods listed in the Zhenjiudaicheng, Xiaoertuinaganfmaihuoyingmizhiquanshu, Tuinaguangyi, Youketuinamishu, Lizhenganmoyaoshu, those that share the same name were analyzed and their characteristics examined. Results & Conclusions : Complex manipulation methods listed in the pediatric tuina specialized texts which shared the same name had similarities in their content, but some were different according to text. In terms of specific content, the Zhenjiudaicheng and Xiaoertuinaganfmaihuoyingmizhiquanshu were similar and the Tuinaguangyi and Lizhenganmoyaoshu were similar to each other, while the Youketuinamishu tended to stand by itself. It explained the names of complex manipulation methods, followed by experiences of their effects and detailed application, which was more specific compared to previously published texts with similar manipulation methods. It is heavily referenced in contemporary pediatric tuina specialized texts to explain complex manipulation methods as well.

Objectives : The purpose of this paper is to identify the pathological situation of the Yangweimai and the Yinweimai in the three pulse positions of Cun-Guan-Chi, which is the case of using the Qikoujiudaomai diagnostic method to find pathological situations in the Eight Extra Meridians. The correlating pulse taking positions were nine, a three dimensional concept that searches the pulse pattern in diagnosis. Methods : Relevant contents in classical texts such as the Maijing(『脈經』), Qijingbamaikao(『奇經八脈考』) Zabingyuanliuxizhu(『雜病源流犀燭』) Maiyijianmo(『脉義簡摩』) were examined, along with previous studies on the topic. Results & Conclusions : Once the pathological Qi overflows in the 12 Meridians, illness happens in the Eight Extra Meridians. In terms of Qikoujiudaomai, the position to diagnosis Yangweimai and the Yinweimai is oblique pulsation at Cheok and Chon by change to bottom position or surface position in the Qikoujiudaomai Diagnostic Method. Based on the oblique pulse diagnostic method of the Qikoujiudaomai, a more accurate approach to treating illness in the Yangweimai and Yinweimai by means of acupuncture and medicinals is possible.

Objectives : In this paper, the efficacy of Gryllus Bimaculatus, a rarely used medicinal in Korean Medical material medica, was examined in medical documents. Its nature, flavour, effects, properties and mechanism were studied. Methods : Classical texts on the effects of Gryllus Bimaculatus was researched and analyzed. In addition, medical conditions to which the medicine is applied were compared with those in contemporary medicine which used this medicine for treatment. Analysis on the mechanism of the nature, flavour, and effects of Gryllus Bimaculatus were studied in terms of the Zhangfu correlation to the Five Flavours and the Qi and Flavour medicinal application theory from the Suwen·Zhangqifashilun, together with the pathology of each illness. Results & Conclusions : The nature and flavour of Gryllus Bimaculatus are pungent, salty, and warm, which has the effect of communication and smooth flowing, used as diuretic, and to eliminate blood stagnation and tumor. Illnesses to which the medicinal is applied are blocked urination, cyst, fluid in the abdomen, stagnated blood, etc. Contemporary research comparable to the effects of Gryllus Bimaculatus in the classical texts were mostly on its stimulation of urination, with others on its liver protection effects, anti-coagulation effects, prevention of blood stasis and cardiovascular diseases, anticonvulsant and antihypertensive effects. Newly researched areas were those on strengthening the immune system, anti-aging, and antioxidation. Areas in need of further research were dystocia, Kidney-deficient impotence, and dou zhen(痘疹).

Objectives : This study aims to determine the network of relevant concepts to 'marrow', by extracting semantic contexts of general narratives related to 'marrow' in the Huangdineijing. It aims to reinterpret the meaning of the 'marrow' concept that is not fully recognized today, and to supplement through comparison with the explanation suggested in the knowledge system of contemporary Korean Medicine. Methods : First, explanations in the Huangdineijing on the phenomenological substance of 'marrow' and later discourse made by East Asian Medical doctors were widely collected and analyzed. Through this process, a network of related concepts were determined, from which the nature and meaning of 'marrow' was extracted. Contemporary Korean Medical interpretation of the 'marrow' concept was examined and compared. Results : The marrow holds an independent position which is not explained in contemporary Korean Medical texts. Other new understandings were acquired, such as its physical anatomical existence based on its pathologies, the relationship between marrow, the Gallbladder and Shaoyang. Conclusions : 1. While the marrow holds a similar position to the innate Jing, it is not pure Jing itself. It is material form created from nutrition, yet highly refined, thus holding a unique position in being responsible for basic life activity. 2. The pathology of marrow in the Huangdineijing appears as comprehensive, including the nervous system and various neurotransmitters. 3. It is necessary to subdivide the general meaning of marrow into a multiple narrow meanings, based on the physical difference between bone marrow and nervous system. 4. The physiology of marrow is intricately related to the functions of the Gallbladder and Shaoyang.
