Abstract

To protect traditional energy sources and preserve long-term sustainability, grid-connected electric vehicle (EV) charging stations are being incorporated with renewable energy sources. The renewable energy storage technology being used at the charging stations can handle both effortless charging and unexpected demand variations in the grid. However, the unpredictable nature of renewable energy is a major issue with this approach. Due to the direct connection of the energy storage systems through renewable resources such as solar PV panels at charging stations, the converter should provide a regulated output at the necessary magnitude under conditions of both variable and insufficient input power. Under high-gain situations, the performance of a typical converter in terms of charging efficiency is poor. To resolve the above issue, a new converter topology is proposed by combining the features of conventional boost and two-transistor isolation-based zeta converters. The proposed hybrid isolated zeta-boost converter is able to provide a regulated output voltage by keeping the power transfer efficiency high even in very low-input conditions. The concept is verified through the simulation to achieve a regulated DC output voltage of 168 V with a 150 W hybrid converter under an input variation of 30-50 V.
