Review of Korean Medicine Treatments for Hearing Loss in Korean Journals

Abstract

Objectives : This study was to review and analyze researches on Korean medicine treatment for hearing loss, and present data for further treatment and research. Methods : Three researchers used six Korean search engines to find studies on Korean medicine treatment for hearing loss published from January 1, 2000 to December 31, 2023, and analyzed bibliographic information, main symptoms, treatment period, treatment method, evaluation scale, and treatment results of each study. Results : The most common accompanied symptom was tinnitus (84 times). The most commonly used herbs were Glycyrrhiza uralensis (70 times), Poria cocos (53 times), Zingiber officinale (46 times), Angelica gigas (45 times). and Citrus unshiu (42 times) which are the components of the frequently mentioned prescriptions, Banhabackchulchunma-tang (4 times) and Bojungikgi-tang Gami (4 times). The most widely used prescriptions were Gongjin-dan (12 times) and Sunkihwalhyul-tang (11 times). The most frequently used acupupoints were SI19 (83 times), TE17 (76 times), TE21 (66 times), GB02 (61 times). The most commonly used meridian was Gall Bladder (231 times). Conclusions : These results may enable more effective treatments and follow-up studies for hearing loss.
