Effect of Combined Korean Medicine Including Chuna Manual Therapy for Myofascial Pain Syndrome: A Systematic Review

Abstract

Objectives This study aimed to evaluate the effect of combined Korean medicine treatment, including chuna manual therapy, for the management of myofascial pain syndrome (MPS). Methods This study was conducted across ten electronic databases, including PubMed, Ovid MEDLINE, Embase, The Cochrane Library, China Academic Journals (CAJ), ScienceON, Korean studies Koreanstudies Information Service System, Oriental Medicine Advanced Searching Intergrated System, Korean Traditional Knowledge Portal, and Research Information Sharing Service, up to August 2024. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) investigating the effect of combined Korean medicine treatments, including chuna manual therapy, for MPS were selected. The methodological quality of included studies was assessed using the Cochrane risk of bias tool 2.0. Results Five RCTs met the inclusion criteria. A meta-analysis of two trials showed that combined Korean medicine treatments, including chuna manual therapy, demonstrated a statistically significant improvement in total effective rate compared to the control group. However, a high risk of bias was identified across all studies. Conclusions Despite favorable outcomes in the meta-analysis, the evidence supporting the effect of combined Korean medicine treatment, including chuna manual therapy, for MPS remains limited due to reliance on a single Chinese database (CAJ) and the methodological limitations of the included studies. Well-designed, high-quality RCTs are necessary to confirm these findings and address the identified limitations.
