Abstract

The rapid emergence of small commercial streetscapes known as Ridangil across many Korean cities has created new physical settings and street interfaces. This study examines changes in the urban fabric and place characteristics of Jeonridangil and Haeridangil in Busan. Through site surveys, observation, and photo documentation, unique urban features of Ridangil streetscapes were identified to analyze their physical, morphological, and typological characteristics. Based on urban content and levels of permeability and accessibility, street interfaces were categorized by openness, transparency, and opacity. The results showed that transparent interfaces, predominant in both streetscapes, ensure a human scale, opportunities to enjoy the climate, aesthetic experiences, and positive sensory impressions. The findings provide insights into various street interfaces that increase visibility, mixity, functionality, and intensity of commercial streetscapes, thereby enhancing urban vitality and walkability.
