Abstract
ObjectivesThis study examined interaction effects of father-child Rough-and-Tumble Play (RTP), father’s involvement and father’s leadership on the children’s emotion regulation.MethodsA total of 276 fathers with children ages 3 to 5 years responded to questionnaires regarding their play style, involvement, leadership, and their children’s emotion regulation. The data were analyzed using two-way ANOVA.ResultsFirst, RTP and involvement had an interaction effect on children’s emotion regulation. It indicated that high group of involvement induced better emotion regulation than low group of involvement. Second, RTP and leadership had an interaction effect on children’s emotion regulation. It indicated that high group of father leadership induced better emotion regulation than low group of father leadership.ConclusionResults suggest that both the father’s RTP and involvement and leadership need to be considered to explain the effect of father’s RTP on children’s emotion regulation. In addition, these findings make basic rationale for developing parent education program for healthier father-child relationship and children’s emotional development.
