Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the dyeing properties and skin-health functions of silk fabric using a hot-water extract from an Acorus gramineus Solander leaf. The powder extract was characterized by FT-IR and was employed to dye silk fabric by considering various parameters, such as temperature, duration, pH, dye concentration, and mordant, followed by the examination of dye fastness. Finally, the dyed fabrics were evaluated for UV protection and deodorization. The Acorus gramineus Solander leaf contained asarone and β-asarone, which are known to be the main constituents in the plant. The fabric was optimized for a maximum dye uptake at a dyeing temperature of 80 ℃ for 40 min, and the dye uptake was found to be superior when post-mordanted with iron (Fe) or when the dye bath was adjusted to be more acidic. The dyed silk fabric displayed yellowish-red shade and three different tones, including light grayish, soft, and dull. Some dyed fabrics showed good fastness related to dry-cleaning, perspiration, and rubbing. UV protection and deodorizing function were excellent at all tones. These results can help in utilizing the Acorus gramineus Solander leaf, which is an agricultural byproduct, as a functional natural dye for fashion and textile industries.
