The Political imagination of Mourning in the TV Drama The Village: Achiara's Secret

TV드라마 <마을-아치아라의 비밀>에 나타난 애도의 정치적 상상력

This study set out to investigate the political imagination of mourningembodied in a TV drama titled The Village: Achiara's Secret. The drama puts a death that has not been mourned in the front and traces its cause. Here, the journey of searching for truth involved in the death represents an act of completing mourning. The process of revealing a doubtful death that nobody remembers and mourning the death exposes the truth of massive order that caused the undeserved death. The drama thusmakes viewers imagine the political nature of mourning beyond personalmourning to grieve over death.Exposed through the political imagination of mourning by the drama,the problematic reality had the following aspects and facts: first, the long-standing patriarchal system surrounding the Korean society works asa comprehensive political, social, and cultural principle within the society. It also prevents women from becoming subjects with the conditions of violence and suppression, accumulates capital, and reinforces the systems made by men. Secondly, the maternal instinct and family myths, which the Korean society is pregnant with in a secret and ongoing fashion,force people to distinguish themselves from others and manipulate a lifeof indifference to others and confusion. The possibilities of mourning's political nature are revealed in the process of investigating the truth through the solidarity of others and the practice of the mourning community. At the same time, the limitations of mourning's political nature are depicted as it is aroused that such a practice can never make a success in its true sense in the Korean society. In the end, the drama introducesa metonymy for the Korean society through the political imagination ofmourning.In short, The Village: Achiara's Secret makes a challenge to the limitations of TV dramas that either compromise with the ruling ideology orreinforce it further by embodying the political imagination of mourning. In other words, it is a controversial work that has raised questions withthe ruling discourse that has been taken granted, exposed the order of the Korean society's old irrationality and contradiction, and helped the viewers have a drama-based reflection.

본고는 TV드라마 <마을- 아치아라의 비밀>이 형상화하는 애도의 정치적 상상력을 구명해보고자 하였다. 이 드라마는 애도되지 않은 죽음을 전경화하며 그 죽음의 원인을 추적한다. 이 때 죽음에 얽힌 진실을 탐색하는 여정은 곧 애도를 완수하는 행위이다. 아무도 기억하지 않았던 석연치 않은 죽음을 드러내며 애도를 수행하는 과정은 억울한 죽음을 초래한 거대한 질서의 실체를 폭로한다. 따라서 <마을-아치아라의 비밀>은 죽음을 슬퍼하는 개인적 애도를 넘어서 애도가 지니는 정치성을 상상하게 한다. 이 드라마가 애도의 정치적 상상력을 통해 폭로하는 문제적 현실의 양상과 실체는 다음과 같다. 첫째 한국 사회를 둘러싼 오래된 질서인 가부장제는 우리 사회의 정치·사회·문화적인 광범위한 원리로 작용하며 폭력과 억압의 조건으로 여성이 주체가 되는 것을 저지하고 자본을 축적하며 남성들이 만든 체제를 강화한다. 둘째, 우리 사회가 은밀하고 지속적으로 배태하고 있는 모성신화와 가족신화는 타자에 대한 잔인한 구별 짓기만을 강요하며 타자에 대한 무사유와 혼돈의 삶을 조장한다. 한편 타자들의 연대와 애도 공동체의 실천으로 진실을 밝히는 과정은 애도의 정치성이 지니는 가능성을 보여준다. 동시에 그러한 실천이 한국 사회에서 완전하게 성공할 수 없음을 환기함으로써 애도의 정치성이 갖는 한계도 보여준다. 결국 이 드라마는 애도의 정치적 상상력을 통해 한국 사회를 환유하고 있음을 확인할 수 있었다. 요컨대 TV드라마 <마을 - 아치아라의 비밀>은 애도의 정치적 상상력을 형상화함으로써 지배이데올로기와 타협하거나 오히려 그것을 더 강화하기도 하는 TV드라마의 한계에 도전한다. 즉 이 드라마는 우리가 당연하다고 여겨왔던 지배담론에 문제를 제기하고 한국 사회의 오래된 부조리와 모순의 질서를 폭로하며 드라마적 성찰을 가능하게 했다는 점에서 그 성취와 의의를 찾을 수 있겠다.
