Is Entrepreneurship Different from Management ?

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to examine the relationship between entrepreneurship and management with respect to research and education. There has been scholars who argue entrepreneurship is, and should be, different from management. Most famous example is Shane, who strongly advocate the distinct domain of entrepreneurship clearly distinguishable from (strategic) management. In spite of the argument, it is true that in most universities, entrepreneurship research and education are encompassed as part of a business school. In Korea, however, where entrepreneurship education has been supported and in part led by government, the situation is different. In this paper, we examine such phenomena and then investigate the related papers published in Korea since 2000. We categorized the papers according to the research context, theory and methodology adopted, and variables used for empirical study. The result illustrate that there exist a substantial number of entrepreneurship papers, distinguishable from management papers, focusing the narrow topic of 'entrepreneurial intention'. However, the other papers with titles or keyword of entrepreneurship are on the borderline of entrepreneurship and management. Futhermore, in-depth research on the entrepreneurial process which is often argued as unique topic of entrepreneurial research is very rare. Therefore, the quantity and quality of future study on the entrepreneurial process will be the touchstone to judge whether or not the entrepreneurship and management are differentiated.

창업학으로 흔히 불리는 앙트러프러너십이 연구와 교육측면에서 경영학과 어떤 관계를 맺고 있는가를 살펴보는 것이 이 논문의 목적이다. Shane 등의 학자는 앙트러프러너십이 경영학, 특히 전략경영과 구분되는 독자적 영역을 가지고 있다고 주장하였지만, 해외 대부분의 대학에서 앙트러프러너십은 경영대학의 일부로 포괄되어 있는 것이 사실이다. 그러나 우리나라에서는 최근 몇 년간 창업교육에 대한 지원이 활발하게 이루어진 결과 창업학과 경영학의 분리가 자주 발견되고 있다. 본 논문은 이와 같은 현상을 살펴본 다음, 2000년 이후 국내에서 발행된 관련 논문들을 전수조사하여 앙트러프러너십 연구가 연구의 대상, 사용되는 이론과 방법론, 실증연구에서 활용된 변수들 차원에서 경영학연구와 구분될 수 있는지 확인하였다. 그 결과 국내 앙트러프러너십 연구는 창업의도라는 협소한 주제에 관해서는 경영학과의 차별화를 이루어내고 있으나, 그 이외는 경영학과 명확하게 구분되기 어려운 상황에 있으며 특히 창업과정에 대한 본격적인 연구는 매우 부족한 것으로 확인되었다. 따라서 향후 창업과정에 대한 연구의 양적, 질적 축적 여부가 앙트러프러너십과 경영학의 차별화 여부를 가늠하는 가장 중요한 가늠자가 될 것으로 판단하였다.
