Abstract

This study aims to investigate the characteristics of landscape through an analysis of the relationship between landscape and city and to evaluate the characteristics of the planning of city and nature in the works of Ebenezer Howard, Le Corbusier and Frank Lloyd Wright. Through looking into the historical moments in the pursuit of nature, we can recognize two motives: aesthetical and hygienic. Especially, the aesthetical motive originates from the desire to be toward the outside of the city. That means that the notion of landscape is discovered and evolves from disillusion with the city and that, without the city, the core of the human world, landscape could not be generated. Landscape and city, each other exist in a complementary relationship in the existential dimension. In the light of the fact of this relativity of landscape and city, the characteristics of the planning of city and nature as seen in the works of Howard, Le Corbusier and Wright, are evaluated in terms of the following three categories: the association of urbanity and rurality through the decentralization(Howard), the combination of the urban functionality and natural elements through the centralization(Le Corbusier), and the negation of urbanity and the radical decentralization(Wright).
