Mediating Effects of Self-Concealment in the Associations between Social Support, Self-Esteem, and Depression among College Students in Daegu and Gyeongbuk Areas

사회적 지지 및 자아존중감과 우울 간의 관계에서의 자기은폐의 매개효과 검증: 대구·경북지역 대학생을 중심으로

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine the associations between social support, self-esteem, self-concealment, and depression among college students. The mediating effects of self-concealment and gender differences in the associations were also examined. This study investigated these relationships and the gender differences using structural equation modeling multi-group analysis. The data collected from 307 college students in Daegu and Gyeongbuk areas were analyzed. The results indicated that both social support and self-esteem had effects on depression indirectly through self-concealment, and self-esteem also had direct effects on depression. The indirect effects of self-concealment were statistically significant. There were no gender differences in these relationships. These results suggest that self-concealment should be focused to prevent or alleviate depression among college students.

본 연구는 대학생이 지각하는 사회적 지지, 자아존중감, 자기은폐, 그리고 우울 사이에 어떠한 관련성이 존재하며, 자기은폐가 사회적 지지 및 자아존중감과 우울 사이의 관계를 유의하게 매개하는지, 그리고 주요 변수들 간의 관계에서 성별에 따른 차이가 존재하는지 검증하고자 하는 것이다. 이를 위하여 본 연구에서는 대구 및 경북지역 대학생을 대상으로 수집된 자료에 대하여 구조방정식 다집단분석을 이용하여 실증적 검증을 실시하였으며, bootstrapping 방법을 이용하여 매개효과의 유의성을 확인하였다. 분석 결과, 사회적 지지는 자기은폐를 통하여 간접적으로만 우울에 영향을 미치며, 자아존중감은 우울에 직접적으로 뿐만 아니라 자기은폐를 통하여 간접적으로도 영향을 미치는 것으로 확인되었다. 이러한 관계에서 자기은폐는 통계적으로 유의한 매개효과를 가지는 것으로 확인되었으며, 주요변수들 간의 관계에 있어서의 성별에 따른 차이는 존재하지 않는 것으로 확인되었다. 이와 같이 도출된 결과에 근거하여 대학생 우울에 대한 예방 및 개입과 관련된 함의가 제시되었다.
