Abstract
This study had been conducted to identify how Kurashiki City uses the historical buildings and contributes to the regional revitalization. Specifically, the purpose of the study is to find out the changes of the historical building use and its characteristics since they had been designated as an aesthetic area. Firstly, in order to study the influences of the uses of historical buildings on regional revitalization, the changes of the population and the number of tourists of Kurashiki City, since it had been designated as an aesthetic area in 1969, were analyzed based on statistic data. Next, the uses of historical buildings were studied and their temporal changes were analyzed. As a result, considering that the annual average number of tourists in the aesthetic area of Kurashiki City have not decreased for the past 30 years since it had been designated as a conservation district of traditional buildings but exceeded 3 million, it can be said that the aesthetic area contributes to the regional revitalization. In addition, it was found that, since it had been designated as a conservation district of traditional buildings, the number of tourists increased, which results in a decrease in the number of residential houses and a rise in the number of stores.
