Abstract

According to IEA (International Energy Agency), carbon dioxide ($CO_2$) emissions due to the energy consumed by buildings are accounted for about 24% of the total $CO_2$ emissions. Extensive studies related with reducing $CO_2$ emissions have been carried out after the 2000s. For the environmentally sound and sustainable development, it is considerably important to design buildings considering $CO_2$ emissions in the conceptual design stage. Especially, unlike the steel structures, $CO_2$ emissions are different for each material (e.g. steel and concrete) used in the reinforced concrete (RC) structure. So, the volumetric ratio occupied by each material will have an effect on $CO_2$ emissions. In other words, it is necessary to know the $CO_2$ emissions relationship between two materials in order to reduce $CO_2$ emissions of RC structures. This study is on target to investigate $CO_2$ emissions of steel and concrete depending on material strengths and loading conditions in RC columns.
