장호 시극 연구

A Study on Jang Ho's Poetic Drama

장호는 20여 년간 현대 시극 정립과 대중화를 위해 노력했다. 특히 그는 1930년대 후반부터 1950년대 말까지 단절된 시극의 명맥을 잇는 데 결정적인 역할을 하였다. 그럼에도 지금까지 장호 시극에 대한 연구가「수리뫼」1편에 국한되어 편협함을 면치 못한다. 이에 본고에서는 방송과 공연을 통해 발표된 시극 3편—「사냥꾼의 일기」(방송 시극), 「바다가 없는 항구」⋅「수리뫼」(공연된 시극)의 특성을 밝혀 장호 시극에 대한 연구 폭을 넓히고자 하였다. 장호 시극의 주제는 대체로 사회적, 존재론적 의미가 융합된 지점에서 형성된다.「사냥꾼의 일기」는 존재론적 의미가 강하지만, 갈등과 폭력이 심화되는 현대사회의 한 양상을 ‘사냥꾼’의 강박관념을 통해 우회적으로 비판하여 사회적 의미를 띠기도 한다.「바다가 없는 항구」는 일제 식민지 시대를 배경으로 반일 저항 의식을 바탕으로 불의에 대처하는 두 가지 태도―‘친일 배신자’↔‘불의에 저항하는 자’를 대조한다. 이를 통해 작자는 부조리한 사회상의 고발과 존재론적 모순성을 표현하였다.「수리뫼」는 조선 초기를 시대배경으로 하여, 양반과 천민으로 나뉜 신분사회의 불평등 구조 속에서 자유를 갈구하는 천민의 삶을 그려낸다. 이 작품도 이상과 현실의 괴리가 작품의 결말로 처리되어 시대적 한계와 함께 인간들이 진정한 자유를 획득하는 일이 얼마나 어려운지 극적으로 보여준다. 장호는 시와 극의 접점에 있는 예술 양식인 시극을 통해 서정시나 산문희곡으로는 접근하기 어려운 삶의 심층에 이를 수 있다고 보았다. 그만큼 사회적 이상을 실현할 수 있는 가능성도 더 높은 양식으로 인식하였다. 그리하여 그는 시극을 통해 바람직한 존재나 사회를 추구하기 위한 인간적 노력과 그에 결부된 예술인들의 사명감을 제기했다.

This paper is willing to broaden the width of the study of Jang Ho'spoetic drama by revealing the characteristics of 3 poetic dramas-Journalof a hunter(broadcast drama), Harbor without the sea⋅Surimoi(stagedrama) that were announced through the broadcast or performance.The theme of Jang Ho's poetic drama is formed at the point wheresocial meaning is combined with ontological meaning in general. Journalof a hunter is strong in ontological meaning, but it also contains thesocial meaning in terms of that criticizes one aspect of the modernsociety that conflict and violence are deepened through the obsessivethought of a 'man' who lived his life of a 'hunter' hunting for hiswhole life indirectly. And Harbor without the sea compares twoattitudes (pro-Japanese betrayer↔person who resists injustice andrepression) that handle the injustice based on anti-Japan resistanceconsciousness having Japanese Colonial Period as its background.Though that, the author tried to express the accusation of the corruptsocial aspect and the ontological contradiction by composing a righteouspatriot to fall into difficult situation eventually. Lastly, Surimoi describedthe life of low class by birth who longs for freedom escaping from therepression and suffering in the inequal structure of class society thatdivides the people into the nobility and low class by birth having theearly of Joseon Dynasty Period as the periodic background. This workalso shows how difficult for human to acquire the true freedom dramatically together with the periodic limit as the gap between theideal and the reality is treated as the conclusion of the work.The themes concerned with such limit of human that is described inthe works of Jang Ho can be regarded as the suggestion that impliesthe mission of the artists together with the fact that the efforts ofhuman to overcome that should be sustained eternally. The poetic dramathat Jang Ho devoted his passion has the ground of its existenceregarding that as well. And we don't need to talk about that it is basedon the boundary that cannot be solved with the lyric that lost the storyor the prose and play like realism theater that cannot reach the deepestpart of human or his own judgment that has the higher possibility ofrealizing, though it is slight, in the artistic form located at the point ofcontact between poem and drama.
