A Study on Monorail Passenger's Egress Time Prediction and Mapping Evacuation Risk on the Daegu Metropolitan Monorail-way

Abstract

With the rapid urbanization, a new transportation has been aggressively introduced and the monorail so called eco-friendly urban railway has recently drawn a big attention. The monorail system costs less than other railroads for construction and has good ride comfort; however, unlike other railroads, its rail is an elevated construction which leaves no shelter at emergency. Moreover, most rails and stations are built inside a city, which brings out a high possibility of direct damage from fire and the secondary damage of fire spread. In fact, this case has been proven right in Seattle monorail fire in 2004, Germany Lathen monorail collision in 2006, and Disneyland monorail collision in 2009 and still increases every year. Due to the monorail's big difference from general railroad system, it requires, from the planning stage, a performance based design considering its special feature; however, even domestic and overseas safety laws and regulations categorize it as a general train, resulting high risk at fire. Under this circumstance, Daegu city is constructing the first-ever-in-Korea monorail line going through the urban center. Despite many fire safety devices, given the significance that it is the first monorail introduced in Korea as a public transportation, I believe, a systematic study on prevention system is required to standardize the prevention of and actions against-i.e. evacuation-disasters such as fire respond. Therefore this study predict the evacuation completion time which used spiral chute or high-rise ladder-lift truck through experiment. Also all segments of Daegu city railroad 3 line monorails into total 48 places at 500m apart were divided and then the risk caused by fire at each point was mapped by accounting for evacuation time of the passengers and responding time of rescue party.
