Abstract

Alpha tricalcium phosphate (${\alpha}-TCP$) was prepared with calcium phosphate anhydrate (DCPA) and calcium phosphate dihydrate (DCPD) and then characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-Ray diffraction (XRD), and pore size distribution. Calcium phosphate cements (CPCs) were prepared with ${\alpha}-TCP$ synthesized from DCPA and DCPD, respectively. The characteristics of the CPCs, such as initial setting time, and diametral tensile and compressive strength, were assessed. The yield of ${\alpha}-TCP$ synthesized from DCPD was 98.08 ${pm}$ 1.96%, whereas that of ${\alpha}-TCP$ synthesized from DCPA was 65.96 ${pm}$ 0.01%. While initial setting time of CPC prepared with ${\alpha}-TCP$ synthesized from DCPA was 15.33 ${pm}$ 0.47 min, that of CPC prepared with ${\alpha}-TCP$ synthesized from DCPD was 8.17 ${pm}$ 0.47 min. The diametral tensile and compressive strength of CPC prepared with ${\alpha}-TCP$ synthesized from DCPD were 2.1 ${pm}$ 0.3 and 12.9 ${pm}$ 3.0 MPa, respectively, whereas those of CPC prepared with ${\alpha}-TCP$ synthesized from DCPA were 1.6 ${pm}$ 0.2 and 8.0 ${pm}$ 0.5 MPa, respectively.
