Korean's view of love in Im Kwon - Taek' Film,『Beyond the years』

This study focused on aspects of Korean love by analyzing the method and expression style of love on a film『Beyond the years』. There are various types of love in this film. Firstly, Dong-ho's love is the ‘love of consideration’. Dong-ho dedicates his whole life to look for love, which the women named Song-hwa, his stepsister. But he doesn't confess his love at all because he knows Song-hwa is torn between love for Dong-ho and duty for her stepfather. Second Song-hwa's love is the 'love of courteous'. Song-hwa also cherishes affection toward Dong-ho but she hides her emotions. She spent her whole life in pursuit of filial piety and proper decorum. Third Yong -taek's love is the 'love of grudge' Yong -taek lead a life checkered with ardent loves and deep sorrows. So he harbor a grudge due to the hopeless love for Song-hwa. However, he sublimates a grudge in art by realizing the profundity of nature and life. In that respect, a film 『Beyond the years』shows the concept and expression style of the Korean love. To sum up, korean have ideas of love such as ‘love of consideration’, 'love of courteous' and 'love of grudge'. Also korean are implicit and moderate in expression of love. Therefore, Im Kwon - Taek is successful in interpreting Korean love traditions and in reviving it in this film.
