Nondestructive Analysis on the bell of Boshin-gak

보신각종(普信閣鐘)의 비파괴조사(非破壞調査)

In the course of preparing for the transfer of the Boshin-gak Bell, which was designated as Treasure No. 2, due to the transfer of the National Museum of Korea, the current internal cracks and defects in the founding of the bell were examined in order to verify its solidity through γ-ray penetration via ⁶⁰Co. The bell's compositions were also examined with x-ray fluorescence spectroscopy. The result showed that the bell had 65.2% cracks when viewed from the horizontal direction and 62.5% cracks when viewed from the vertical direction. The cracks had approximately 5cm depth. In addition, the result of examining the composition of the bell revealed that it was made of 89~92% copper and 7.5~10.5% tin as well as traces of impurities including 0.1~0.3% lead and not more than 0.1% iron, manganese, etc.

국립중앙박물관의 이전에 따른 보물 제2호 보신각종 이전을 준비하는 과정에서 사전조사를 통해 종의 안전성을 점검하기 위해 ⁶⁰Co에 의한 γ-선 투과조사를 실시하여 현재 존재하고 있는 내부균열 및 주조결함 등을 조사하였다. 또한 엑스선형광분석법을 이용하여 종의 재질조사를 실시하였다. 그 결과 가로방향으로 65.2%, 세로방향으로 62.5%에 해당하는 균열이 존재하고 있는 것을 확인하였으며 그 깊이는 5cm 내외인 것으로 조사되었다. 또한 성분분석 결과 구리가 89~92%, 주석이 7.5~10.5%이고 불순물로 보이는 납은 0.1~0.3%이며 철, 망간 등은 0.1% 미만으로 매우 적은 양이 함유되어 있다.
