Abstract

The effect of corona discharge on low-density polyethylene (LDPE) film was studied in terms of surface functionality and surface energetics of the film surface. Acrylic acid grafting on the corona-treated LDPE surfaces was also carried out to improve the stability of surface functional groups. The introduction of polar groups on LDPE film by corona discharge was confirmed by FT-IR and XPS analyses. Contact angle measurements were made to analyze the surface free energy of the LDPE film. The corona treatment of film led to a decrease in contact angles mainly due to increase in its specific (or polar) component, resulting in increased total surface free energy. It was found that acrylic acid grafting on the corona treated film was a suitable method to obtain a film surface with stable polar group, because water contact angle did not significantly increase upon prolonged aging time.
