Abstract

Polyetherimide(PEI), high temperature engineering plastic, was electrospun under various spinning conditions. Electrospinning of PEI, dissolved in 1,1,2-trichloroethane, was accomplished with specific ranges of applied voltage, concentration of PEI solution, and TCD(tip-to-collector distance). Diameters of electrospun PEI fibers were strongly influenced by the concentration of spinning solution. Voltages higher than 10 kV induced fiber formation in electrospinning and higher voltage gale somewhat narrower diameter fibers. Proper TCD longer than 10 cm resulted in mainly fibers, while short TCD of 5cm, left bead shaped products due to the insufficient gap to jet fibers. The addition of carbon black to spinning solution changed the electrospinning behavior of PEI greatly by altering the solution conductivity. Addition of carbon black induced narrower diameter(mainly several hundred nm scale) fibers under the same electrospinning conditions compared with pure PEI solution. The resultant diameter distribution of electrospun fiber was evaluated by SEM observation.
