Abstract

Cure behavior, thermal stability, and mechanical properties of diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA)/polysulfone (PSF) blends initiated by 1 wt.% N-benzylpyrazinium hexafluoroantimonate (BPH) as a latent cationic catalyst were investigated. The DGEBA/PSF ratio was varied from 100/0 to 100/40. Cure activation energy ($E_{a}$) was determined by dynamic differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) using the Kissinger method. The $E_{a}$ from DSC results increased with increasing PSF contents up to 30∼40 phr. The decomposed activation energy ($E_{t}$), based on TGA results, behaved similar to the result for $E_{a}$. For the mechanical properties of the casting specimens, the critical stress intensity factor ($K_{IC}$) test was performed and their fractured surfaces were examined using scanning electorn microscopy (SEM). The thermal stability and mechanical properties increased with increasing ratio of neat epoxy resin to PSF up to 100/30. However, a marginal decrease in both thermal and mechanical properties of the blend system was observed, due to the immisciblity between DGEBA and PSF. This was substantiated by the SEM microphotographs of the fractured surfaces.
